Pretty much guaranteed Age of Ultron will have BvS and Star Wars trailers attached.

Why would Disney/Marvel agree to having BvS attached to their movie? What incentive would it be to let their competitor piggyback off of the sequel of one of the most successful movies of all time?

Cause it will do nothing to hurt their own movies.

Disney/Marvel doesn't have to agree to anything. If Warner Bros releases the BvS trailer in theaters that week, theater managers will pair it with Avengers. They're the ones who decide. Disney can insist that certain Disney trailers play before the before Avengers, but they can't veto anything.

Did you get any backlash for whiffing on the BvS trailer? It still seems you have solidified yourself as a big source

Nope. Not a bit. It's weird. I changed that Avengers date late one night a couple nights ago, didn't tell anyone / post it anywhere, and these people just pick up on it and run with it. It's "news" - even if speculative - and something that will get them hits. And I think most people are finally catching it on that's it's all guesses anyway, so if they present it as such, everyone wins. If anything, yeah, my "credibility" has somehow increased since that whole BvS thing, which is insane.

I just assumed if they can push a trailer to go along with a certain film, they could equally push back against one airing with their's.

But even if they could, there's really no reason to try to block it. Unless BvS is releasing on the same day as a Marvel film, they have no reason to think it will hurt their box office at all.

What was your BvS guess again TC?

Also, it seems like the trailer prediction has become one of the primary driving forces of the site. I know your main focus is traffic, so I'm sure you welcome it... but is that what you expected and are you ok with that being one of the sites main attractions at this point?

It's kinda become a clever play on words with the term the Projection List
TCTTS

^ I guessed that it might play with Jupiter Ascending.

And yeah, it's crazy how much the trailer predicting thing has taken off. It's by far what gets the most "news," and I'm totally fine with that for now. I'll take anything I can get at this point. That said, I think once I implement these new features across the entire site, it'll be way more well rounded as far as traffic goes overall. I'm actually sending the final designs over to my programmers tomorrow, and will post a couple of mock-ups here when I do. Really, really stoked for what it's (hopefully) becoming.

You'd think so, but it's almost all up to the theater manager. A studio can request that their trailer play with another studio's movie, but a studio has absolutely no veto power in saying what can't play with their own movie. The only time a studio has any power in that regard is when they're debuting one of their own trailers with one of their own movies, they can insist/ensure that it plays with every "print," but that's about it.

Agreed, the trailer dates have quickly become the Steve Urkel of your site.

Also, I've changed the blog format slightly. Instead of only doing a post every so often when I have something to say (which is usually two+ paragraphs in length), I'm now basically throwing up everything of note in regards to big trailer/posters. So, more posts, less writing (though I'll still continue to say more when I'm compelled to). No cutesy, detailed headlines. Instead, more of a straightforward "feed" of sorts. In general, do you guys think this format is better or worse? I feel like it's the best of both worlds, but I can't tell if it's too impersonal at times...

I really like it. Lets face it, people want content that consists primarily of pictures, videos etc... and lots of it. The more items to wade through the better. Plus if media and information is constantly going up as opposed to once a week or so, then they'll be more likely to check it daily. I think you can still add in your musings which will probably get read more if you can ensure that more viewers are checking out the blog on a regular basis.

You guys hear anything about Amazon and Ridley Scott teaming up to make a series out of Phillip K. Dick's Man In The High Castle?

quote:
Two decades after an Axis victory, Germany and Japan each rule half the United States in an uneasy truce, and no one is satisfied by how things turned out. Hitler's impending death has created a power vacuum, the Japanese are well aware that they're not safe from the Nazis' genocidal ambitions, and Americans are either erasing their culture or selling it off piece by piece to kitsch-obsessed Japanese businessmen.

Alright, a sneak peak at what I've been working on the past few weeks...

The Projection List / Phase Two

I'll be sending the pics below (along with a ton of other mockups and new rules/changes) to my designers/programmers by end of day Tuesday, and figured it couldn't hurt to get some quick feedback before I do. This is all pretty locked down, so I'm not looking for big notes or anything, I just want to make sure I'm not missing something obvious or that the colors aren't horrible. Also, please be aware that the designers will obviously take what I've done and make it all look better/add their own slight touches, etc.

The two main features I want to add:

- Drop down windows for each listing, featuring each movie's poster/brief plot synopsis/director/top billed cast, plus links to each movie's Fandango page for Theatrical, GoWatchIt page for VOD, and Amazon for Retail. If we're able to successfully integrate this stuff, I really do think it takes the site to another level.

- Calendar view. Four weeks at a time. Titles only, color coded to their respective categories. Super clean, insanely simple. I only have a 960 pixel width to work with, so its a crazy tight squeeze, but I think it'll work. Hopefully the programmers will be able to make it a reality.

You'll also notice the Updates page with the same color coding as Calendar view, a bigger overall listings font (12pt instead of 11pt), more space above and below each individual listing for easier viewing, a quicker/easier way to view previous weeks, and trailers that now take up the entire browser window.

Oh, and LANDSCAPE MOBILE VIEW.

Anyway, if you guys get the chance, let me know what you think before I send these off (and please don't post them elsewhere). For comparison, the current version of the site...

Thanks!

The Calendar is a must. The drop down list to be honest doesn't work for me (not how my mind functions) so this would be a drastic improvement. Love the dropdowns too and the pop out in the Avengers pic.

I will say though that the colors don't really work I think with the Black and White you have been using throughout the site. Not sure how you could do it differently, but it just stands out just a bit too much

That's been my fear. But I've tried 1000 different color combinations and nothing has caught my eye yet. There's no other way to do the calendar without that color-coded shorthand, too. But the crayola-ness of it all does kind of bug me. Hopefully the designers will have better options.

Either way, thanks for the honest feedback. Exactly what I need to hear.

What do you mean by the drop down list not working for you? I assume you're referring to the list nature of the site in general, since you seem to like the actual drop down window itself. Or am I not understanding you right?

Please keep the drop down list. And thank you for all your hard work on the site. It looks excellent.

I found your site the other night and wasted about 2 hours watching trailers. Love it. Have you got any advertisers on board?

Was gonna say this.

IMO, black and white looks much cleaner.

Great to hear! No advertisers yet. I need more daily/monthly hits first, hence phase two. Will also be doing some legit advertising myself, which will all hopefully bring in the numbers I need.

just a suggestion, and you may have already tried this, but, I agree with the others about the colors seeming "wrong" somehow.

what if you picked one color, and did different gradients or tones of that color? that way you avoid the rainbow look. OR, do different colors, but very dark, close to black versions of the colors?

I'm right there with you. I just can't think of another way to do the Calendar. If not color coded, there's no way to distinguish between the categories/release types when all on the same page like that. Especially with the limited room I have. I tried lighter/less obvious colors, but those become too hard to read when translated to actual type. I'm absolutely open to any suggestions anyone may have.

Drop down list is an awesome addition. Definitely takes it to the next level.

Colors aren't a big deal to me personally. The functionality definitely outweighs any negatives of the aesthetics... and maybe the programmers will have some other options that blend a little better with the site's scheme.

Great update.

How'd they fix the portrait view on mobile?

The gradient thing may not be a bad way to go. It just hinders readability when it gets to the lightest shade. I'll play around with that idea today, though. Thanks!

I should try linking this to r/movies with some eye-catching headline to get some more eyeballs on it. They would probably love this over there.

Great to hear, thanks!

As for the portrait view, I just took the suggestion of a poster in the this thread a few weeks back and listed the dates only once each week, above the listings, instead of forcing the dates to the right of each listing, which allowed for a lot more room. I'm hoping the programmers will be able to pull it off, but I don't see how/why it'd be a problem.

It's been linked on Reddit a couple times before, but never by a user who was able to get it on the first page, so it's never made much of an impact. But yeah, if you want to give it a shot, go right ahead. I'd love that.
