What we have done for years is leave our grandstand seats at Turn 1 with about 3 laps to go, watch the final lap from on top of the hill and then run like hell to our car which is parked pretty close in Lot T since we get there early. We have a 5 hour trip home so the last thing I need is to be stuck in the parking lot for an hour (or more) like we were on Friday.

Sunday's race was so close almost everybody stayed until the bitter end. That and the record crowd didn't help traffic any.

EDIT: And parking close allows you to go back to your car and hang when it's blazingly hot like it was on Sunday. Yesterday I took a 2 hour break from the heat after the W Series race and got back to my seats 10 minutes before the green flag dropped.

COTA weather has run the gamut with heat, floods and bitter cold. It's nice to have the car within walking distance and an RV close would be amazing. Hopefully they expand RV lots since they can't handle the traffic.

On the RV thing, I saw that you have to bring an RV that is less than 5 years old. I get that they want it to look nice on TV, but come on. Does anyone know how strict they are on this?

Parked in Lot F, sat in Turn 12 bleachers. 15 minutes to get from car to seats, 25 minutes to get from seats to car to exiting the property. Sorry to hear that so many others struggled with the traffic. Hope they finally get this all sorted out one day.

The Good:

Man, what a great weekend. The race today was awesome. Had a ton of fun with my son and one of my best friends, WC87. I hope we can make this an annual event for many years to come. Met lots of cool people from all over the country and a few international folks. Being in GA, 99% of folks were courteous and respectful of space and wanting to make sure they aren't crowding you. Watching the F4 and W races were a lot of fun too.

The Bad:

Holy f-/@, the traffic management was an utter disaster today. We parked in Lot L all 3 days. Friday and Saturday we got in and out very easily. Today was a different story. We left very soon after the race ended (I regret that now). We got to my truck by 3:45 and were backing out of our spot by 3:50. We didn't get out of the lot until nearly 6pm. There was no one directing traffic out of the lot, so some fans took it upon themselves to direct traffic at one of the exits. Absolute **** show. I have to assume it is like this each year. Because how the f-// does this happen after 10 years? I know one of the **** roads by the track was closed for construction. But my gosh.

Like, Esteban said, they need to get TTI involved to help with the traffic.
Great weekend with La Fours and his son. We sat GA Turn 11 all 3 days and it was fine. Met great people and for the most part everyone was courteous. You could leave your seats and walk around and everyone left your stuff alone.

Days were long showing up at 9a Fri, 8a Sat, and 7:30a Sunday but we got good spots at the top of the hill above 11 each day.

TRAFFIC WAS HORRENDOUS leaving Lot L on Sunday. We moved 1 truck length in 1.5 hours at one point. Finally we spied movement behind us at the far side of the lot and what looked like a McLaren fan actually directing traffic, something COTA could not manage. We made our way over there and lo and behold a group of about 5 race fans were directing traffic and getting all of us moving. As we were exiting we thanked McLaren traffic guy and he just said, someone had to get us out of this ****ing lot lol.

WAZE initially said we'd be back to College Station around 5;45p. We did not get out of the parking lot till 6 or so. Over 2 freaking hours to exit.

Wait,

So from what I am gathering, the exit roads remained two way? Why didn't they make them uni-directional to get the most people out as quickly as possible? Heck even use the shoulders to get people out.

This sounds ridiculous.

They have used the shoulders in past years and I assume they did this year as well.

The problem is that they only do that at one location and there are many roads around the track.

The big problem in Lot T, and I assume it's like that in most parking lots, is that there's only one entrance and exit.

On Friday and Saturday you actually had people trying to come in to park for the nightly concerts as the lot was still jammed from race day.

They used the shoulders for ~1 mile and then merged it to 1 lane, so basically did not help at all.

The premium VIP RV spots with full hookups are about $12,000 for the weekend. These are the spot that you see on TV, right after turn 11 parallel to the DRS straight. Those spots are all part of the RV+tickets package that they sell as a bundle. There is also an observation deck in the middle of this RV section.

The RV spots behind turn 9 are all dry camping, unpaved terrain, hilly. This area was packed to the max with patio furniture all over, like walking through a flea market. I don't think these spots are shown on tv as they are way behind the turn 9 bleachers.

The ones behind Turn 9 are what I am interested in for future races. There looked to be a line of campers that were set up, and the guests just had to show up. I say that, because at one camper was a Ferrari, Mercedes wagon, and a classic Bronco. Pretty sure none of those towed the camper, much less having 4 or 5 identical campers in a row.

There was a lot of chatter about adding Las Vegas as a 3rd US Grand Prix. Vegas representatives were there to observe COTA during a race weekend.

It makes sense to pair it with Miami to give the F1 two stops in the spring to go along with Austin/Mexico in the fall.

And a Miami update:

But to reiterate, other than the Lot L fiasco, it was a fantastic weekend.

Max on Pole, Checo 3

Max P1, Checo P3

And great news! After Pole and P1, Hamilton and the rest of the field are now ...

It's so funny to me that they're gonna have this big race in Miami that will be full of hype for South Beach and all the wildness of south Florida…….and their best option was to build a track in a parking lot around a stadium in the suburbs.

Meanwhile Jeddah will be nothing but resorts and beach front views.

Edit: and I should add that yes I understand getting an FIA compliant track is EXTREMELY difficult so it makes sense, but it's still funny to me

What happened to the original layout proposal they had a few years ago?

The last time a parking lot was used for a grand prix it didn't turn out so well:

My strategy every year is I take my kids to practice sessions on Friday and watch the rest of the weekend from my couch. We get to experience the cars and the track but don't have to deal with all of the weekend madness. Plus I feel like you lose a lot of perspective of the big picture of the race when you're there in person that you'd normally get from watching it on TV.

This year we got a parking pass in private lot Z that was just beyond the turn 11 hairpin. I think I paid $30 for the parking pass on stub hub a month or so before the event. We got out of the lot quickly on Friday but still got caught up in back road traffic east of the venue. I think it took us an hour and a half to get home to northwest Austin. Not horrible.

oohh that reminds me - massive upgrade in the stands at Turn 1:

They installed Wi-fi and it actually worked during the race on Sunday so I got to listen to the tv broadcast of the race via YouTubeTV albeit like 30 seconds to a minute delayed usually with a few connectivity hiccups.

I couldn't believe how well it worked.

Was there any commentary being played via the trackside speakers audio system on race day? We didn't hear anything on Friday in turn 9.

Yes, it was loud in Turn 4 bleachers, but I'm not sure why they don't just relay the Sky Sports audio with David Croft. Would have been much better than the in-house track announcer.

We hustled right after the the race ended on both Saturday and Sunday to get back to our shuttle pick up area for 51st/Guad. Took about 15 min to get to the lot and had about a 20 min wait both days. Thing we picked up on was that there was no organization to the pick up zones at all. Only people working out there were the drivers and one guy attempting to count heads, which was disappointing because the actual pickup location on 51st/Guad was very well organized I thought. The lack of staff at the track pickup made it real easy for someone to get on the shuttles who hadn't paid, and it would have been very easy to cut the whole line.

Saw pics of people stuck in that line for hours later in the night though on Sunday due to the drivers quitting so we got really lucky.

That attendee-to-event-staff ratio has to have set a record all-time high for a major sporting event. You were basically free to do whatever you wanted, wherever you wanted.

We were at COTA both Saturday and Sunday and about 9 hours both days. I thought the traffic management was really good considering the number of people. We were in Lot A and I thought the time spent creeping along was reasonable. After the race on Sunday there were more people trying to cut in line, but I'm guessing the Brostang crowd was just a little too wound up.

We did the pit lane walk both days and that was a lot of fun. We learned some lessons from the first day and being down there before the race on Sunday was really cool and we knew the best route to take. I was a little taken aback when Danny Ric ran by on the way for the driver's parade, but it was pretty funny. Our seats were above the Merc garage so we had great views of the Red Bull and Merc pit stops. I wasn't sure how I was going to like just seeing the cars coming out of the final turn and through turn 1, but it ended up being pretty good. Never tried to see what was going on elsewhere on the track. Doing the mental math when 33 was behind 44 and then the other way around was not a bad way to keep track and the Merc garage had the time difference between the two readily viewable.

Also had a few away from the track encounters. My daughter literally ran into Latifi Friday evening before he was heading out for his sponsor obligations. Saw Kimi have an interesting encounter on Saturday evening. He was on his way up to his hotel room when he spotted the young boy next to us wearing an Alfa Romeo jersey so he walked over to surprise the kid and that worked. The kid was over the moon and you could tell Kimi really enjoyed it. Then we saw the tax he had to pay for his good gesture when a bunch of grown-ass men surrounded him so they could take a selfie. You could tell he was bothered and he was finally able to make his escape. We saw GR twice and not once did anyone go up to him. Lance Stroll did have an encounter with a selfie taker, but he hardly had to break stride. Was around Lawrence Stroll a couple of times and he seems to be enjoying life. And people certainly left him alone. We saw Lewis at the track twice and he was really cool with the fans, and there were many, who wanted a wave and he seemed genuinely happy to oblige. I'm sure knowing there was an insurmountable distance really helps someone of his fame level. Zak Brown was also genuinely nice around people while Toto Wolff was the one who did the most to try and disguise himself and thus not be discovered. It was pretty interesting watching Toto try and avoid people. And he was pretty successful from what I saw - hug the wall, look down, walk incredibly fast. One of my favorite pictures I took that's not car-related was Christian Horner and Helmut Marko sitting down together having a deep conversation. Right after I took the picture Mattia Binotto stopped by to say something to the two.

Seeing all the cars up close was amazing when they were doing their pit stop practices. After watching FP3 and quali my daughter and I could tell the difference in sound between the cars. The Red Bull/Alpha Tauri cars, the Alpines, the two Merc cars, and all the Ferrari-engined cars sound really good. The Williams sound is just awful and the McLaren is somewhere between the two, but closer to the two Mercs. The Alpines had the most unique sound when they came out of the last turn and started hauling ass down the straight. The Mercs and Red Bulls/Alpha Tauris were the most similar, but the Merc sound was just a little higher on the tone register. And all of them sounded terrible when at the slow speed through pit lane.

Fans wearing Ferrari gear are in a pretty tough spot as there's really no way to not look like a total tool. The only way is probably to go way overboard. There was the half tool look - hat and shirt - and full tool look - hat, shirt, pants, and shoes. If you added a flag and some other things then maybe it was okay.

Interesting comment re: George Russell...does he give off a "dont bother me" vibe or just lack of interest from fans? I would put him up there with top couple I would want to meet i think...

I stayed in lot N RV lot Thurs-Sun and sat at turn 9 bleachers. That had to be the easiest walk to and from the track. Food lines and crowd at that area was the smallest I have seen. I definitely recommend that set up but when you leave make sure to have an exit plan because that lot also is btch to get out of.
