Russell ALMOST takes pole but gets denied by Verstappen
Good on Russell and Williams.
I'm speechless about Russell in the front row in a Williams... Holy crap. What a call, what a drive. That was awesome!
Now it's time to see him put these solid qualifying efforts into points!

for those of you who missed the alonso helmet cam, practices are available on the ESPN app. helmet cam was one lap with ~37 minutes to go and another with ~5 minutes to go in FP2. it is worth seeking out imo. hoping we get some of that footage in the race, was a bit disappointed we didn't get any today.
The helmet cam is a long time IndyCar staple. Rumor has it the 2022 cars will have the 360 degree cameras IndyCar have also been using for quite some time. That will really add value to the broadcasts.

He was holding his left elbow when out of the car. A spin like that has exceptional rotational energy, look at how many times he spun (granted it was wet) and think all that energy was generated by one hit. That hit threw his body hard left and elbow got banged against the carbon tub with minimal padding.
Hope he's ok but tomorrow might be in doubt. He's on the cusp of pushing Max and Lewis and I'd like to see him win one soon too.

Times don't carry over to the next session. I don't think he had a time in Q3 so nothing to defend. But I didn't know that last year either so it's not an unreasonable assumption on your part.
He had not completed a flying lap in Q3. Had he done so, then yes, he would get the position on the grid for where his time ended up. But that would also be contingent on his mechanics getting his car repaired in time. Otherwise he will start from pit lane or take a grid penalty if they decide to swap any or all of chassis/engine/gearbox.

My assumption about Lando starting from the pit lane comes from the commentators during Q3 mentioning that he would need to swap the engine, etc. I'm fairly certain they also said this was going to be the first race on his 3rd engine, so that is a horrible stroke of bad luck if they also need to use his 4th engine (incurring a penalty) tomorrow. Maybe his backup engine is one used earlier in the season...
If by some miracle, they are able to get the car up and running with only new tires, suspension and body work, he may very well start on the grid. I just think that is highly unlikely.
