I honestly think Mick would further his development faster in GP2 than in those pigs Haas is putting on the grid.
Haas is such a disappointment. It's obvious he wants to sell the team.

He sucks all the sudden and can't adapt to the car. Shame the pretty good car is being wasted this year. If it was still Lando and Carlos it wouldn't even be a competition with Ferrari.

Some sort of engine problem is all I have found online so far. Which is stating the obvious. Still searching Twitter for info.

I honestly think Haas doesn't want to sell. Prior to this season they made it well known that they were not going to put much, if any, money in developing the car this season. Everything would be aimed at next season and beyond because of the new regs taking effect.

I may be wrong, but if you're wanting to sell, seems like developing the car this season and showing "good" results by the drivers would increase the value and attractiveness for potential buyers. Especially with the signed drivers and the money they bring in from sponsors.

To me, this plan is at best maintaining the value, if not lowering it somewhat.

Can someone explain why Mercedes didn't try to two-stop Hamilton? Seems like there was nothing to lose.

It seems like the feeling was that RB would have matched any change in strategy by Merc, so there would have been no benefit. RB also would have matched with new tires, which Merc didn't have for Lewis.

Merc's pit strategy bombed last week, so they probably didn't want to get too creative this week.

Because of the lead Max had, even if he stopped after Ham he would have still come out ahead AND had newer tires... so the 2-stop wouldn't have helped Mercedes.

I agree. It will be interesting to see what happens if they still fall flat in 2022 after the redesign.

It would have at least given Hamilton something to race on. Let them go at it and see what happens. Hope they make a pit mistake or something. I get that it was a hail Mary, but it sure seemed like hail Mary time to me.

The other aspect is that there is the risk that Hamilton has a bad stop, and then he's even further behind Max, and potentially out of a podium finish as well. Guaranteed P2 so long as there wasn't a catastrophic failure of a tire or part of the car.

Lol, I'm sure they will still be last next year. And I really want Haas to be a good team. It's an American owned team and I really like Guenther Steiner. He seems like a dude who would be fun as hell to hang out and have a few beers with.

Steiner seems like a really cool dude who keeps getting dealt ****ty cards. He's one of the most likable principals out there.

Sounds like the tires for this weekend's GP will be C3-C4-C5, which are the softest they can be.

Last weekend's medium will be this weekend's hard.

IMO, this pretty much means it will be a 2+ stop race for everyone.

I saw this graphic before the race yesterday. Seems like if this week could still be a one-stopper for some.

That was for the C2-C3-C4 tires...

Last week, C2 was ~36-47 laps, C3 went ~27-41 laps and C4 was ~26-31 laps.

Assuming the cars that make it to Q3 are using the softest (C5), they will start the race on the C5 and then within 20-22 laps have to pit. If they go to the hardest option (C3), they'll be able to go around 41 laps. Assuming no safety car, etc., they will be about 8-10 laps short.

I could see most cars that make it to Q3 going C5-C3-C5.

I gotcha. That makes sense.

I think it was uncharacteristically hot last weekend. If cooler temps this weekend then tire degradation should go down and it might bring a one-stopper back into play for some. Just a theory...

With softer tires, I'm guessing the undercut is more powerful this week... which could make for some interesting 'late' 2nd stops.

Did Pirelli split tire compound mixes at Austria during the doubleheader last year as well?

I don't recall for sure - but if you think about it F1 has to do something so we don't have the exact same race two weeks in a row. And it doesn't look like this track is set up to provide multiple layouts like some are.

Last year, I believe both races were C2-C3-C4

At Silverstone, they used different compound mixes during the double header.

https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/how-secret-cosmetics-chemical-is-helping-red-bulls-f1-charge/6621339/

Quote:

The team's fuel and lubricants supplier ExxonMobil delivered a revolutionary new oil at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix that has helped push the team forwards.

The new Mobil 1 oil is particularly intriguing because ExxonMobil made a big push in evaluating chemicals not traditionally used in engine products to help deliver the step.

The end result is an oil that features components normally used in the cosmetics industry, but are now being utilised to help improve the oil's protective film that it leaves on metal parts. This saves the engine from damage caused by extreme heat and wear.

In such a competitive world as F1, ExxonMobil won't reveal exactly what specific chemicals it has used, but says they were key to the progress it has made with its product.

---

"These new components were incorporated as they were found to offer many benefits, including stronger interactions with metal surfaces and lower friction, helping deliver maximum power while offering protection and fuel efficiency.

"These benefits also translate into an ability to run the engine across a wider range of operating conditions."

One more link...

McLaren does a fan Q&A after every race and there are usually some good technical questions that get answered. It does skew towards McLaren but some of the answers probably apply to all teams...

The link below is updated every week after a race. You can scroll down and see all the Q&A from all the races.

Has anyone been to Silverstone? Considering as I have a credit for F1 Experiences that expires at the end of the year. Canada doesn't look too enticing anymore as they removed a few things from the packages.

Its been years since I went but Silverstone is a great experience and pretty walkable in a normal year. Our seats were halfway up the grandstand at Stowe's Corner. There was a large video screen and it was totally worth it to rent/buy the radio that gives you access to race commentary. You really can't hear anything. To that note, invest in some good ear protection.

We didn't try to park there either but took a chartered tour bus to the site from where we were staying in Birmingham. Its really not near much either so lodging was hard to come by. I think the closest place is Northampton.

Either way it was an awesome experience.

Did they fix the traffic issue? That's always been the downside to Silverstone.

I'm not a big fan of moving the start/finish from Copse to Abbey, but other than that it's a great track. Try to get a view of Maggots & Becketts. Watching the cars go through there is impressive.

No idea if they fixed traffic but that's exactly why we took a charter. Traffic was awful and the bus had to make some tight turns. At one point I could have reached out and touched the second floor window of some of the homes we passed.

Austria Week 2

HAM struggling to P7 in FP1 but has taken top time so far in FP2.
VER takes P1 in FP1 but both Mercs are Top 2 in FP2.

Could Merc be looking at a comeback this week?
