So the tires were not defective and the teams followed the manufacturer specs. But they don't know why it happened? Am I missing something here?

No, you're right. Pirelli is covering their self. If RB and AM ran them at spec, which they say they did, there was a tire failure. Not much else to do unless this is repeated at another circuit; if that happens, hold on to your hats.

I've been catching up on FP1 and FP2 and it reminded me that if you are new to the sport, make sure to watch the practice sessions.

There is much more time for "educational" commentary that goes into the cars, drivers, tracks, etc. During the race, they don't have time to go into the small details and are focusing on the race itself.
