THRILLED that Perez won!
VERY BUMMED about Verstappen losing the win (and not even finishing) because of the Pirelli blowout. Just wild. He really needed those 25 or 26 points.
But thankfully Hamilton somehow snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Accidentally flipping a switch?! Really? That's what you'd expect from Mazespin. Not Hamilton.
Anyway - Checo did an INCREDIBLE job holding off Hamilton for over half the race.
And Vettel had an awesome drive.
You can tell how much of a fluke it was Thant Lexlerc and Ferrari were on pole. All because of the tow in Q3.

There's the debris that caused all the issues. Look where the marshal and opening on the wall is...sure it could have come from the tree across the street too, but that's really suspect.

Two flukes in back to back qualis for Leclerc/Ferrari?

Ferrari has had better single lap than race pace all season. Merc has been the opposite.

Leclerc was only .03 off the fastest lap in Q2.

He certainly did get a good tow off Hamilton but it's disingenuous to act like that's the only reason he was on pole.

My uneducated opinions is to tend to agree it's a bad look. Not necessarily that they failed, but that the same tire failed for both cars and within the given lap guidelines.

Same tire makes it seem more likely that teams were pushing the tires to limits more than it being a defect/etc to me. Baku is a rear tire limited circuit.

Absolutely. Both Q3s got cut short (because of Ferrari wrecks???), keeping Verstappen, Hamilton, and everyone else from being able to make another flying run.
And let's be real - Leclerc only had that P1 time in Q3 because of the crazy tow he got.

He got a tow off of freakin Lewis Hamilton. That was absolutely worth 0.6 seconds. He wouldn't have been on pole without it.

The results in the race made that evident pretty fast as Leclerc was quickly dropped to 6th.

My reply was kinda tongue-in-cheek, I know he had a lot of luck. But he's also done pretty well in qualifying all season, it's not THAT crazy..

Just got to watch the race. It was wild. My dvr ended during the red flag. Hated that Hamilton and Merc would probably take the lead then saw the last two laps on YouTube. Big drama.

Two races in Austin would be cool. Wouldn't mind changing weekends.

Sainz didn't end Q3. Yuki's wreck caused the red flag.

Always add an hour or more to anything F1-related. An hour yesterday was just enough to see the podium ceremony.

One thing my wife and I have noted the last few races is that ESPN seems to have a lot less post-race coverage than last year. There are usually lots of interviews with the drivers and team managers (Toto, Horner, etc.) with the race announcers and commentators. It may have been that ESPN was more amenable to it last year with COVID going on and the lack of sports highlights. Who knows.

Now it seems that almost as soon as the champagne spraying is done, we get a plug for Mothers wax products and back to ESPN sports highlights.

Yeah, me and a buddy were talking about the lack of post-race coverage a couple of weeks ago.

Also, this was the first week my DVR recorded FP2. It recorded FP1 and 3, but not 2. Seems like FP2 was only available to stream from the ESPN app. IDK. My Dish DVR has had issues with recording F1 practice/qualifying/races on ESPN channels last season and a few times this season.

My YouTube TV gets all the practices, qualifying, and full race coverage every week regardless of running long, etc.... I never even have to think about it.

I am about to make the switch to YouTube TV. Just need to get another Fire Stick and have time to train my MIL how to use it and how to work YouTube TV. She aint the most tech savvy person. I don't need her blowing up my phone while I am at work so she can figure out how to watch her stories. She lives with us...

Honestly as long as you can teach someone to find and click on the YouTubeTv app it's pretty much the same as cable/dish UI. At least for live, if they can't figure out the YouTube tv on demand or streaming they probably don't use your dish options for that either.

That's good point. She pretty much only watches live TV or shows recorded on the DVR with Dish. But she's started watching shows/movies on HBO Max recently. May not be as bad as I anticipate.

FP1 and FP3 have been on ESPN2 while FP2 has been the only F! coverage airing on ESPNU. I wonder if that has anything to do with it.

That could be the issue. I thought the DVR was set to record no matter what channel, but that isn't always how it ends up working. Thanks.

A bit of drama at Haas and Williams.

    https://www.autoracing1.com/pl/338959

    Quote:

The F1 rookie's father and Haas title sponsor Dmitry Mazepin last week complained that the Russian military is insisting that his 22-year-old son complete his mandatory service.

"Nikita has 23 races to do this year, and they are telling him that he needs to join the army," Dmitry Mazepin, head of the Uralchem company, was quoted as saying.

"He said to me, "Dad, what should I do? I have a race every two weeks'. Nobody wants to listen."

I'm thinking Russia might just want Dmitry Mazepin to spend some money to make the military obligation go away.

At Williams, they have an org shakeup and new team principal.

    https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/article.breaking-roberts-to-leave-williams-with-ceo-capito-taking-on-team-principal.72PccmaW3c7oSzx2dRaG4k.html

    Quote:

The restructure of Williams, following the arrival of new owners Dorilton Capital, continues with news that Simon Roberts will leave the Formula 1 team, as CEO Jost Capito absorbs his Team Principal duties...

Roberts joined Williams last June in the newly-created role of Managing Director, before taking over as Acting Team Principal when the Williams family sold the team last August. That role was made permanent before Christmas, as he was charged with managing the transition.

Capito, who joined the team just over four months ago, has been conducting a review of the outfit, and after 100 days in charge has decided to complete an internal reorganisation to simplify the reporting structure, which means Roberts' role as Team Principal or Racing Director as it is known internally no longer exists.

Capito will take on the role of Team Principal, while the trackside leadership duties held by Roberts will be transferred to Technical Director Francois-Xavier Demaison, putting him charge of technical aspects across the factory and race track.

Yes - I like it a lot. I use three screens during the race.

Main feed, pit lane or driver cam, and data or track position.
