Seems like the wind was giving Hamilton and Verstappen fits throughout Qualifying. Both had lap times deleted at some point and had to adjust. Those last few minutes of Q3 seemed to be horrible conditions to gain any time toward Pole.

Some of those onboard looks with Max certainly made it look like he was fighting the car a lot!

Boring hour.

Q2 with the fastest times of the day outside of Bottas. Surprised by Vet and disappointed Leclerc struggled all morning.

It was a boring quali. But potentially sets up for some interesting tire/track strategy tomorrow.

I would try again tonight, the line has died down a ton according to my friend. $200 for a 3-day GA is tough to beat especially if you go to the concerts too.

Are tickets only available in person? I go back and forth on if I want to go this year or wait one more year. Will be my first F1 and want to have the full experience but honestly don't want to wait another year...

I think you have to buy online. I think there is still some GA left. Bully Joel is the headliner.

Online and tickets are for all 3 days.

That makes sense. I would have figured online but when I read "the line has died down" was curious.

Is this year going to be 50%? I sorta think I want to wait for 2022 and hope for a full / normal experience.

Agreed.

Unfortunately I'll be traveling during the race

Hamilton wins and Bottas wins the battle for Fastest Lap after Max gets a fastest lap track time deleted due to track limits.

This may be my new favorite sport to watch. It makes it easier to follow the drivers and their personalities since F1 on Netflix has come out

Interesting fact: Kimi is one of the wealthiest living F1 stars. If I recall correctly, net worth around $50MM-$60MM. Probably helps his "gives no Fs" attitude.

Watched almost all of the Netflix series and watched my first race today. Glad this thread is here. Never realized how good F1 was.

Really interested in going to COTA. I forgot tickets went on sale this week.

Anyone done the general admission grass tickets before?

Need a texags suite.

It is a hidden gem on the ESPN networks on race weekends. On any given race weekend we will watch FP2, Qualifying, and the race. My wife also loves the podcasts during the week as well.

GA at COTA is how we like to roll... the venue offers so many good perspectives to watch the race from, and we enjoy walking around to those various views... even during the races.
Ticketed section seating is great, but we've found ourselves wanting to get up and move around during the race events.
Different strokes for different folks.
Such a great venue to watch and enjoy a day of racing.
It'll be a 15-20k step day if you move around and check everything out.
Enjoy!

I bought GA passes for my son and I this morning. Also convinced a buddy to pull the trigger too. I'm pretty freaking excited.

I bought a Lot L parking pass, so we will probably spend most of the time at the Turn 11 GA section.

Man - Perez is certainly disappointing so far this season.

He's getting used to an aggressive high rake rear setup. Much different than the pink Mercedes he was used too.

I think he used Max's exact setup this weekend to go with a know setup vs tinkering in each FP.

Give him 7-10 races and see if he can stabilize.

Is it Perez, Albon, and Gasly, or is it Max?

There's a big difference in experience between Perez and the previous two drivers. Two of them were essentially rookies vs a 10 year veteran.

Yes, adjusting to a new car does take time, but Perez's performance is still disappointing.

It's a second seat, same can be said with Merc, why isn't Bottas winning more. Yes he's doing better than RB #2's but still hasn't made any progress in years.

RB and Merc have clear top drivers, the next few constructors have great evenly matched drivers. This year is showing that more, will be interesting to see where the 3-5 constructors are mid year and which driver is doing better.

People don't realize what a special talent Verstappen is. He won on his first outing in the Red Bull after replacing Kvyatt and was faster than Ricciardo straight away. He reminds me a lot of Senna in the way that he dominates his teammates. Senna even made Prost look slow at times.

Are the cars identical for a team outside of the custom fitted seats? Do they have the same engine modes programmed on both cars? I assume the engines and gear boxes are identical.

Yes, but the adjustable settings such as steering, suspension, aero, etc are set per drivers preference.

I don't understand Red Bill's race strategy. They know what those tires will do, it's not a secret. There was no way they were going to make it to the end.

Bad bad decision. They gave Max no chance to win that race
La Fours

Seems like RB finds a way to screw up the strategy if given the the chance. I think I posted something about this just before the season started, or maybe after Bahrain.

I swear it is like they are scared to make a decision and end up waiting too long, letting Merc get the advantage.
Vernada

Mercedes' strategy team just made RB look like complete amateurs in that race.

It looked RB had given zero planning/consideration to a Merc 2 stop plan.

Yep. And this seems to happen a couple of times a year.

RB seems to rarely adjust on the fly. They stick to their pre race strategy regards of Merc. It's frustrating, I'd like to see them both pit and fight it out over the last 15 laps. Instead it was Hamilton making it look easy.
La Fours

Let's come back full circle with the RB #2 driver talk. During the race, I think it was around laps 48-50 after Hamilton's second stop, the commentators briefly discussed that Max was at a disadvantage because his teammate wasn't in any position to help.

Yep. Absolutely huge strategy advantage for Merc knowing they didn't have anyone but Max to race.
