I liked the part about Scott Drew and compliance forms, like he was worried about that ten years ago

Remember when the kid committed to UTEP that we wanted? I think he was an nba players son or something.

FWIW, this way-too-early conference prediction puts us in 10th place:

Quote:

10. Texas A&M

Possible starters: Marcus Williams (transfer), Manny Obaseki (Fr.), Quenton Jackson, Jordan Hall (transfer), Javonte Brown (transfer)

Bench: Andre Gordon, Hayden Hefner, Hassan Diarra, Henry Coleman III (transfer), Ethan Henderson (transfer), Aaron Cash (junior college), Wade Taylor IV (Fr.), Ashton Smith (Fr.)

Buzz Williams has attempted to restock and restart his program with promising but largely unproven (at the SEC level) talent. Ranked No. 31 in the Class of 2021, Obaseki (6-foot-4 shooting guard) is the second-highest ranked player (behind DeAndre Jordan) in the 247Sports Composite to sign with A&M. Taylor, a 5-10 point guard, is a borderline top-100 prospect too. Williams was Mountain West Rookie of the Year at Wyoming, averaging 14.8 points and 4.3 assists. Hall was Atlantic-10 All-Freshman at St. Joseph's, averaging 10.6 points, 5.9 rebounds and 5.7 assists as a 6-8 forward. Coleman was a top-50 recruit who played just five minutes per game as a freshman at Duke, Brown a four-star 7-footer who transferred after two games at Connecticut, Henderson the No. 1 recruit in Arkansas who averaged 6.9 minutes in three years with the Razorbacks. How many of these newcomers can really help? Jackson (10.4 ppg, 41.1 percent from 3) and Gordon (9.3 ppg, 2.7 apg) are back to offer some stability for the Aggies and surely some of the fresh faces will pan out, but this feels more like a bridge year than a breakout season.

Yeah 9th-11th kind of what I have been saying on where we will likely be projected.

We are exactly half way through June... What are the odds we actually find out who this "game-changer" transfer is in the next two weeks?

Listing Wade Taylor at 5-foot-10? He's not that short. I'm not so sure Obaseki will be a starter from day one. He's an incredible athlete with a ton of upside, but needs to sharpen his outside shooting a little bit.

What's the latest with another potential transfer....I'm guessing you know who Looch is referring to. Not asking you to name names, but can you shed some light on if it's still on track?

Gabe said he doesn't know who Looch is talking about. Logan spoke more generally last week like having a spot available might be good later in the summer if somebody good pops into the portal. So maybe its not a specific person Looch is referencing or maybe Logan is trying to steer the message that way to avoid tampering suggestions as somebody mentioned the other day Billy does a weekly Q&A and somebody asked for about the potential basketball recruit so it will be interesting to see if Billy answers it and what he says.

Gabe doesn't keep up with ins and outs of bball recruiting like Hop...I assume Hop has inquired to his boss about whoever is being speculated.
MarcAg

Hop doesn't know the name unless he just found out this week. I get Billy not wanting to throw out a name cause it might not happen. And somebody less info out there is better. If he isn't telling Gabe he isn't telling anyone else

I forgot about Marcus Carr, who I have long assumed is going pro.

Top available on this particular list - Carr, Mitchell, Bagley, Darryl Morsell (Maryland).
Mitchell to Texas. Beard has cleaned up in the portal.

Way to go LawHall. New Texas staff reading this board and are like oh yeah we forgot that kid was out there. We should go get him.

Even before this off-season Beard had kind of adapted to the let's build a roster for this coming season and then we will worry about the future and next year later. Put as good of a team as I can on the floor this year even if they are one year parts.

I won't say anything about Marcus Carr then.

Oh, damnit.

I dunno how much of that is adapting versus having some success and actually being able to do it.

If you can recruit well enough I'm sure everyone would love to only have to worry about the next year knowing they'll be able to just load up again the next right?

Are y'all saying that there is an issue with Buzz being able to evaluate talent?

Not necessarily. I think there have been some misses for sure, but that's not that unusual. Our program is probably always going to be built on getting fringe three/four stars and coaching them up and then occasionally, hopefully, sprinkling in a truly good prospect.

I get what you are saying, but we're paying Buzz a Top 10 salary - if we're just hoping to and 3/4* fringe prospects and a stud every once in a while then we might as well have just either gone bargain shopping and hope to find the next Beard/BCG/etc... or go with a known recruiter without much coaching prowess.

Paying $4m a year to need to coach fringe guys up -- and then not being able to actually do that the first 2 years - is a colossally poor investment.
Buzz isn't Top 10 (according to this link he's 12).

He's not making $4M a year (unless his salary is rounded up).

He had an inherited team with limited talent playing better than most of us anticipated in year one.

Based on what he did at Marquette and Va Tech -- and given the impact of COVID on a team with a dramatic need for a roster rebuild -- I'm willing to wait for more data before assuming this will be the trajectory of the program going forward.

(Even the vaunted Duke program had a hard hiccup in the 20-21 season).

No there really isnt. Maybe kid isnt in the portal. Or maybe its a juco like Curry.

I would gladly take Kevin Samuel, but very few people know who he is. He had a down year, but he can definitely give you quality minutes inside.

I thought the super senior forward from UTEP we'd be after is the venerable Eric Vila. Have him pull a Marfo and come back home.

Now that would qualify as an enormous get. Can't imagine a talent like that would end up at A&M right?
Any prior connections to our staff or players?

Cockburn said he went to Illinois because "Coach O [Orlando Antigua] recruited me for years and we developed a great connection." Coach O is now at Kentucky. So, I hope Javante Brown can handle him.

This NIL thing now...you've seen nothing yet. Pretty soon you'll more and more see sports 'NIL' agents/consultants driving the recruiting process...working through how A&M is going to help the recruit build and cash in on his personal brand while in College Station. If somebody has convinced a recruit he'll be able to make 20K a month in endorsements, appearances, etc. while at their school, Buzz better have at least a similar package detailed out.

Kofi Cockburn, for all we know some other program has made a great sales & marketing pitch to how much $$$ he'll make from booster-led endorsement deals.

College sports is rapidly becoming a whole different world from what we've been used to.
bobinator

I think it's been a similar process the whole time, it's just going to be legal and out in the open now.

There's always been a bunch of middlemen trying to get theirs between college coaches and players, I think it'll be better for everyone now that it plays out in the open.

It's gonna crater what little competitive balance there was left in collegiate sports. The gap is gonna grow even larger. Small schools won't be able to compete and that was kind of the best part of college athletics was seeing the underdogs prevail on the big stage

This is going to positively impact A&M because of our money and resources, but I still hate it from a fans perspective

It might. But they chose a competitive model than benefited them for 116 years. So the NCAA and schools very much have to change now. The transfers, the NIL, competing openly on educational benefits is now all part of the solution.

If the pseudo-amateur system continues it will be by absorbing these changes the way the Olympics federations did. Only amateur wrestlers are left in the Olympics.

I do think there will be massive changes. One is likely price pressure on football abd coaches salaries. Another could be systematic defunding of Title IX equity distributions as donors shift to more direct sponsorships.

Schools with huge investments may try to keep the status quo long enough to pay off at least debt. But short of meaningful media rights increases going forward, everything SHOULD change.
