I think every 4 years is still a good time frame, it gives the judges enough time to try out places multiple times. After they are established places, meaning the reader can feel confident those places will be open a year or two after the list is published (exception: Brazos BBQ in Cresson.) I'm in the favor of the top 10 new places to try on a yearly basis, as it gives the reader options to try that they might not have heard of (i.e. Black Board BBQ in Sisterdale.)

As to Louie's versus Black's, well, that's like, well, your opinion, man. I have my opinions, based on multiple visits each location. I've shared them here. If you don't agree, well, that's like, well, your opinion, man. Best thing in the world, is that we can eat wherever we want to. #thedudeabidea

I think the one thing that we can all agree on, however, is that good BBQ is worth eating. And I think this thread encourages all of us to eat the best barbecue we can find.

That being said, I plan to have a nice tray of great barbecue and Evie Mae's on Friday morning. If any of you happen to be in the neighborhood, feel free to join us. The wife and I intend to arrive between 10 -10:30am on our way to Ruidoso.

P.S. we plan to have dinner tomorrow night at Vagabond Pizza in Abilene. (Aggie owned and operated!)

There was a long thread on premium yesterday arguing over if Lubbock or College Station was the better college town, and all I could think was "Lubbock has Evie Mae's, and we don't"

It's so good, enjoy it. Make sure to get some of that jalapeno cornbread if you've never been there before!

Well, Evie Mae's isn't really *in* Lubbock...

Damn their jalapeno cheese grits are good! Brisket was great both times I went and the "knockwurst" was legit...I waited until we were on "to the next page".

FYI - Mickelthwait's just opened up in Smithville. Remodeled an old auto repair shop.
Haven't been yet. Heard it is expensive.

I will try it one day but Zimmerhanzel's is still my go to.

Quick look at the menu and doesn't look any more expensive that any other craft 'que place.

You're right. I've just heard that from the locals.
Local folks aren't going to pay that when they can go to Zimmerhanzels and get more food for less. And it's the best bbq around. (in my opinion)

But, I DO realize, his target market isn't the locals. I hope he does well. I'll try it someday. Facility looks nice. He's invested a lot in the building remodel.

Hit up 1775 BBQ today. Got the works. Brisket, ribs, mild and hot sausage, turkey and they were doing pork steaks. Plus sides. Brisket and ribs were spot on. The hot sausage knocked my palate out a bit. The pork steak needed a bit more time on the pit I thought but it was close. Just a bit chewy.

Stanley's in Tyler today was awesome as usual. Such a great setup there and good menu. Not elite but overall experience is up there with some of the best IMO.

Went to the new Truth this morning. Pretty disappointed by the brisket. Not bad by any means, but far from great. Ribs were excellent though. Hopefully it's just a matter of time before they get used to the new location

Ate at All the Kings Men BBQ for lunch today and for the first time was a bit disappointed. I had moist brisket that was too fall apart and the wife had lean which was really dry. Parents had turkey which was good. Sides were good, but meat definitely a step down in quality from the other few times we've been there.

Stanley's is one of my favorite BBQ experiences because of the bar and live music at night. Bbq is pretty dang good and consistent as well.

That damn Mother Clucker is legit.

Yes, and will now be Sat/Sun only. They want to re-open it sometime this month after they feel Houston is running smoothly, but also want to make sure there will be a solid customer base in Brenham still before they do so. I am hopeful it happens this month or next!

I wouldn't be there any later than 10:15...maybe earlier if weather starts getting nicer like today. I went in Fall last year and we got there about 10:20 and we had about 40 in front of us.

Just had another excellent lunch at Garcia's Mexican Food in San Antonio. BBQSnob wrote them up on his personal BBQ website back before he got hired on at Texas Monthly. It's a tiny Mexican restaurant that also serves great brisket. I get the Brisket Plate every time I go - brisket (ask for marbled), lettuce, pico, guacamole, tortillas, rice and beans.

Went to Stiles Switch for lunch today. Got a free koozie when the cashier saw my A&M polo and ring (second time that's happened). They hiked their prices up for SXSW, but I wasn't too upset about it after enjoying my meal. Ever since they hired away Franklin's pitmaster their quality across the board from brisket to sides has gotten better and better. The brisket was phenomenal. Seasoning, smoke, and fat render was close to as good as it gets. The ribs were seasoned perfectly, and passed the bite test with flying colors. Beans had little bites of brisket in them and a good spice level. Mac and cheese was really cheesy and good overall.

I'm really glad this place has turned it around. They used to be really bad when I first tried them a few years ago. It's nice to be able to get top notch bbq without having to drive into downtown Austin.

Today's plate:

My first trip here a few years ago (yes, that is the moist brisket):

Sorry, I rarely take food pics - but I'm sure Yelp has them!

My wife got regular Tex-Mex and said it was just okay. The brisket is the star of the show.

For more in a similar vein, the BBQ tacos at Valentina's in Austin are really good.

Funny you say that. I asked for corn casserole, but they gave me Mac and cheese instead and I didn't notice until I sat down.

Super cool thing happened tonight! Thanks to @yvettehelberg and @tabasco_phill for opening up #theamslerbuilding tonight and @rosslers_blue_cord_bbq (Kristen and Steven Wayne Rossler Jr.) for cooking a great meal as we all collectively hosted the #USAFThunderbirds in advance of their show in Waco this weekend. Special thanks to Capt. William Glen Goncharow for setting us up with the team. We are so happy to have been a part of a night where you remembered a fallen comrade. #Cajun #4 @helbergbarbecue#444BuckingBullsLLC (Lastly, thanks to our friend and partner for the introduction back in Vegas last November.) #bbqfamily

Does Killens still have a cooler/keg of free beer out front on Saturday morning before they open? Does Corkscrew?

My brother in law is coming to town next week and wants to drink beer and get BBQ

So Noble Pig on 620 in Austin switched over to BBQ (Interstellar)... apparently it's pretty legit. Planning to check it out this weekend. Will report back.

Thinking about going to Franklins on Saturday morning. I'm assuming it'll be a **** show, but how early do you think I'll need to get there?
