Honestly, I do think dbag wyndam is a big reason for this one. They are looking for it and should be

In general, these guys improving their lie by mashing down grass is an issue. So the downside is this seems like selective enforcement, but this is an area I'd like to see more penalties dished out.

Agree with this too. Though I get much more annoyed where guys will practice swing as wide as possible to 'prove' a hospitality tent is in their backswing for relief, or change their stance completely to claim a drain is near their feet so they drop from heavy rough to the fairway. All, you know, 'legal' rules in golf.

Agreed. I don't have much opinion on this particular incident and whether the R&A has a bone to pick with Bryson. But I do know that Wyndham does that exact same thing all the time and has never been formally outed for it.

Intent is impossible to prove because they all have their tricks to make it look innocent.

THAT is unnatural. What Bryson did, whether intentional or not, was consistent with every single time he addresses a golf ball.

Well, if he's backing the R&A there's no question this was BS.

Meanwhile Rahm is throwing clubs with no penalty.
Enrico Pallazzo

And I thought Clark's 18 approach was even more shady. Swapping clubs in and out behind his ball, mashing down the rough whole time

Rules official explaining now. Intent is irrelevant.

He clearly improved his backswing by walking on the grass directly in his swing path.

I'd love a before vs after photo. It looked extremely matted from the volunteers before he even walked up

That doesn't matter. The rule is you can't do anything to improve your lie by altering the grass. The fact that you do that in the fairway doesn't give you the right to stomp down grass in the rough. If you're in the rough, it's on you to make sure you don't do that.

Look at the video just as the first volunteer walks away. It's more vertical and BD basically goes ham stomping it down while standing behind his ball
Enrico Pallazzo

Just as he walks up, the yellow behind his ball (where he is looking) is pretty vertical

Now he's given it a good 5 stomps, is standing on top of it, and it's much more horizontal and well behind him.

It is not unnatural to take multiple practice swings in the rough to see how your club will react. You'll notice you took practice swings in different spots of the rough not next to his ball.

Every single time he address the ball he doesn't step on the grass behind the ball.

It's unnatural to take a step with one foot directly behind your ball and swing into the grass off balance when you could have done it literally anywhere else with a normal stance.

Wyndham's chip is tougher because there wasn't a great camera angle behind to see how close he got and how much it helped. But this one feels like a no-brainer.

Not a Dechambeau guy and the slight stomps were definitely intentional, but there is NO CHANCE IN HELL they would give Rory or any Brit that penalty. That is what makes it BS.

I think the damning thing about Wyndham's video is that he's looking down the whole time. The only reason to look down that intently while you're making a super unnatural practice swing in a different area near your ball is to either 1) make sure you're not stepping on your ball (which means you're stepping pretty close to it) or 2) make sure you're stepping on a very specific clump of grass.

That's a good golf channel video showing Bryson stomping around to improve his lie. Not sure why it's not embedding.

The very beginning when gets to the ball and the very end are the worst of it. As cerebral as Bryson is I find it hard to believe there wasn't at least a little intent behind it. He stomps pretty good right when he gets there and then again when he finally goes to address it.

Idk if it gets called on anyone but him or Reed but that's another argument.

I honestly can't see how anybody watches the video and thinks that Bryson didn't stomp on the grass intentionally to improve the path of his backswing. He did it multiple times to the same clump.

Multiple players have done it without penalty but it doesn't make it right.

I'm gonna enjoy the story line for the weekend and I hope Bryson ends up winning.

R&A penalizing an American player for it is always going to raise some ire, but he made it an easy case for them. I really don't think it's remotely borderline. That said, I hope they keep enforcing it on everyone. And I'd point out the R&A wasn't the one letting Wyndham and others off the hook.

IMHO, now that Bryson did make such a visible fuss over it (which I support, for whatever that's worth), he has a few options:

1. Take the high road, play, and say all the "right" things. This would be gay.

2. Play, but take every opportunity to criticize and let them know that we all know they are crooked. This would be way better than #1.

3. Don't play. This would kinda kick ass, honestly.

#3 won't happen. He made it sound possible, but between sponsors and advisors telling him to play and the very real fact of still being in contention in a major, he's not going to quit. Especially after missing three straight major cuts. He is the story of this tournament now, so obviously he's going to use that to have the eyeballs be on him all weekend rather than be invisible. He's an internet creator too, after all.

#1 is, sadly, the most likely. Even though it's the gayest. #2 is only fractionally possible, as the same people who will be invested in keeping #3 from happening will demand that #2 doesn't happen either. I know his agent said he'll make the decision himself but I don't believe that for a second. He'll spin it that way, but ultimately, the sponsors he's signed with will demand #1. And even if not, he'll ultimately choose #1 because of the last part of the paragraph above this one.

Calling them crooked when he pretty blatantly broke the rule would seem moronic and childish. If he wants to call them crooked, then he needs the X army to find some examples in this tournament where similar behavior occurred and wasn't punished. Again, I do think Wyndham's questionable behavior has made watching for this a point of emphasis
