I love golf but golf is freaking stupid for stuff like this. Do you want to let the players call their own penalties? Then get out of the way and don't go call super vague, controversial penalties on them after the fact. That's complete BS.

I often wish we'd see players/teams take a stand and just quit when dealing with obviously crooked officiating. Maybe Bryson is actually the guy that will. I doubt it, but I genuinely hope he just goes scorched earth and leaves.

I mean come on. He very clearly and intentionally takes multiple steps on the grass behind the ball when he first got there. It wasn't when he was lining his shot up. He stood behind the ball a second time to line it up.
The very beginning when gets to the ball and the very end are the worst of it. As cerebral as Bryson is I find it hard to believe there wasn't at least a little intent behind it. He stomps pretty good right when he gets there and then again when he finally goes to address it.

Oh no doubt. And realistically there's no chance his agents, managers, and sponsors will let him do it. But I really wish he would.
And even though he won't really quit, what I then secondarily wish he would do is at least go scorched earth in any and all media, for basically the rest of his career any time it's ever brought up and every year he plays over there. But he won't do that either. Sponsor money always prevails.

Honestly, he should have a PR firm put together a little response to the basic / normal questions he'll get otherwise that goes on the offensive.

Lots of tradition, great fans. Poor setup and conditioning not up to standards of a prestigious major. Dead fairways, wispy rough, etc. Hopefully better leadership for future tournaments.

Oh I totally think that is what's going on. Come on - no way in hell Rory would get this treatment.
In general, these guys improving their lie by mashing down grass is an issue. So the downside is this seems like selective enforcement, but this is an area I'd like to see more penalties dished out.
If I had a dollar for every player at an Open Championship who has walked and swung their club all up in tall grass prior to the shot I'd be a billionaire. To say they could prove intent by his actions is laughable.
