Can't wait! I'll be there 28th-30th.

What else should one do in Munich besides Die Wiesn?

I'm kind of in the same boat. Looking for other stuff to do. I was going to start my research in a couple of weeks.

DC, would you recommend going to the Augustiner brewery?

I would recommend going to any of the breweries if you can.

There are a number of things you can do in Munich depending on specific interests you may have. Museums, more bier halls that you can possibly visit, Nazi architecture and "sites" and of course there is always Mike's Bik Tours.

If you feel like going out of town go to Nuremburg which isnt too far away. Bamberg is also a short trip and a great city.

Kicks off in 30 days!

If anyone goes to the Paulaner or Augustiner breweries (brewers of my favorite beers), I'd be interested in a report as to whether they're worth going to.

I've been to Augustiner. It was in a large building near the Hackerbrücke stop. Definitely worth a visit. I had a pork saddle dish and of course plenty of beer. Great atmosphere and a good experience overall.

Anyone been to the Weihenstephaner brewery? That's another of my favorites.

I live in Dallas actually.

The Augustiner is worth going to. You can sit in the beirgarten or in the cellar.

The beer is hard to find here. And I've only been able to locate the dopplebock. Which is insanely expensive. But it quickly jumped to the head of the line.

Augustiner drinkers are kind of snobby. I wonder if its the Augustiner "culture".

What's your typical beer of choice at oktoberfest?

I drink Augustineer at the bar I usually go to.

Other than that I enjoy Hacker-Pschorr, Spaten and Pauler...in that order.

They don't have a tent on the Wies'n, but Kloster Andechs is some of the best beer I have found the past 2.5 years I've been living in Germany.
Though probably Augustiner Edelstoff is still probably my favorite. And it's even better drinking it at the Augustunerkeller/Biergarten in Munich.

I know this is probably a stretch, but do you think anyone will have the Aggie game Saturday, the 29th?

Yes I am sure you can probably find it somewhere.

After all the drinking at die Wiesn, check out either Herrenchimsee or Neuschwanstein - both are very beautiful, picturesque castles.

Or just do what I've always wanted to do, and stake out a Bierzelt and claim it as my castle.
dcAg

LOL. Lots of castles to see.

I am sure we will each claim a Bierzelt. Im leaning towards the Hacker.

I just moved to Munich a couple of months ago and this will be my first trip to the Wiesn. Would be interested in meeting up with some Ags for a few beers. Would also be willing to point out some things to do in Munich after.

Went on Saturday to the Schützen-Festzelt tent. One of the best experiences I've ever had. I would love to start going to the wiesn every year. My only regret was not learning some of the traditional songs before I went.

Was there on Friday at Augustine Festhalle and on Saturday at Lowenbrau. Was better than I expected! Didn't have any reservations for either day, but got a table in each tent anyway. At Augustiner, there was only 4 in my group, so we found a table easy. At Lowenbrau, with a group of 11 we got in line about 10am and got almost to door, then they said tent was full. So we got all disappointed. But we stayed in line, and in about 10 minutes, they let about 50 more in and we convinced (tipped) a waitress to let us sit at a table in the raised areas surrounding the floor. We drank god so many liters and tipped her like crazy, and when the reservation switch time came, she kicked everyone out of the area except us and let us stay there till 5PM. Thanks Kristal (our waitress)! By then I was ready to go...

I cant wait to go back next year, but would rather go early in the week, so its not so crowded. We watched people in the window outside stand in line for hours and never got inside. I would hope like on a Monday or Tuesday, that its not so crowded that you could actually get into multiple tents in a day. I wanted to do that, but was afraid once we left our tent, you would never get in anywhere else.

Saturday was so crowded you couldn't walk. It was almost a riot for people trying to get inside tents. Security guards were arm and arm pushing back a wall of people trying to bum rush the gates. Girls were screaming from getting squeezed. Crazy.

But I would go back in a heartbeat! It was heaven on earth!

Made it over on Tuesday afternoon after our train arrived from Mainz. With a national holiday on Wednesday we decided to just head straight over. We got there around 2:30 and after a bit of searching in the Augustiner tent a waitress grabbed my FIL and gave us a spot after she thre some folks out. The table was reserved after 5pm but we managed to get a few liters of beer and some food before then. Was a great time!
