so the Brewers are now 10-1 in the postseason

after winning 103 games during the regular season

definitely in the conversation for being a top 5 team of the 21st century in MLB

Rizzo "really wants the job" because he thinks "they'll continue to spend money". Sounds like a complete retread of Dana all over again. He would make Ausmus or Bagwell look like a superb GM hire

It's 2017. The best power 1-2 punch in baseball is Aaron Jude and Gary Sanchez. The future of the Bronx Bombers is bright with these 25- and 24-year-olds. But the Astros and Lance McCullers' curveball get in their way of a title. The 2 basically go in opposite directions. Judge becomes one of the greatest hitters of a generation. Sanchez falls out of the spotlight. 9 years later, one is about to win their title. The other still looks light years away from one.

Rome threw out:
1B: Paredes / trade Walker
2B: Tuve
SS: Dubon (sign) / trade Pena
3B: Correa

My idea earlier in the thread:
1B: Paredes / trade Walker
2B: Tuve
SS: Walls (sign) or Allen
3B: Correa
OF: Suzuki (my #1 target of the offseason)

They're basically the same idea. Correa's future should be 3rd and can't be traded. Walker is not worth his salary. Paredes has offensive value similar to Pena. However, Pena has waaaaay more trade value. Seems like the best way to stay compeitive and build for the future.

I am all for the trading of Pena, but I am worried we missed our window. Unless there is a significant season in 2027, nobody is giving us anything of significant value for Pena. We should also be exploring trading Diesel if we can't get him extended.

Another topic Rome broached was the catcher position's future. Yainer is a below-average defender and a very streaky hitter. However, the offense is more good than bad. He finished as a top-10 hitter catcher, 115 wRC+. Do they put Yainer on the market to make room for Jason Schiavone? Is the 23-year-old ready to make the jump after his breakout 2026?

Who is Jason Schiavone? Only the kid who just put up a 32-32 season across A, AA, and AAA. And when you jump into the nerdy stuff, it looks real, with a few issues.

Statcast Contact & Power Metrics
Schiavone possesses what scouts view as 80-grade raw power, regularly registering top-tier exit velocities.

Metric Value Percentile / Notes
  • Average Exit Velocity 91.8 mph Top 4% (96th percentile)
  • 90th Percentile EV 105.1 mph 80th percentile
  • Maximum Exit Velocity 109.1 mph High-end raw power
  • Barrel % 13.3% Top 5% (95th percentile)
  • Sweet-Spot % 46.7% 84th percentile
  • xwOBA (Expected wOBA) .350 86th percentile
Batted Ball Profile & Plate Discipline
Schiavone pairs his loud contact with an optimal launch angle to consistently elevate the ball, though his profile is defined by extreme passivity in the zone mixed with hefty swing-and-miss tendencies.

Metric Value Scouting Context
  • Launch Angle Sweet-Spot 26.7% Low percentile; highly optimized for lift
  • O-Swing % (Chase Rate) 10.8% 100th percentile (Elite plate discipline/selective eye)
  • Z-Swing % (Zone Swing Rate) 66.2% Below average; passive on strikes
  • Whiff % 28.6% High swing-and-miss against all pitch types
  • Z-Contact % (Zone Contact) 77.5% Explains the high minor league strikeout rate
  • PullAir % 11.8% Pulls fly balls with authority
By trading Yainer, the team will save a few dollars (room to sign players of need) and gains more prospects to continue to rebuild the farm. If Schiavone is legit, then we continue to have the possibility of competing now and still building for the future.

I wouldn't mind at all moving on from Yainer, especially if a team is willing to give a couple of decent prospects. Even though he kind of pulled it together the last half of the season, he has been a very frustrating player to watch - offensively and defensively.

Houston has to move at least one infielder. The outfield had a combined WAR of 0.1 this year. Woof. Altuve was the definition of league average with a 0.0 WAR. You can't have your positive WAR guys sitting the bench- and you only have 4 lineup slots among Pena, Paredes, Walker, Correa, and Alvarez. I guess you could mitigate injury risk by keeping them all, but that's not the best use of your payroll and a luxury the Astros don't have with the OF wasteland.

Throw Peña's contract status on top of that, and I think he's the valuable trade chip. Get some OF talent or another SS, whichever offsets the open market possibilities. A Walker trade would just be to make space for Paredes at first, not payroll relief (since Houston would have to chip in money) or talent swap. So, I think it's Peña or Pena + Walker, but not Walker alone.

I think this is as high as Yainer's value will be unless MLB juices the ball again.

The question is do you flip Parades and send money and Walker away and teach Yainer to play 1B? Is he good enough offensively to put him there?

I'd trade Pena, HB, Yainer and Walker. Should get decent returns here and dump Walker the anchor.

Just spit-balling, but I'd look to sign Arozarena, Gallen, and see what we could do to get Dubon back to play SS. Maybe look at Jeffers as an option at catcher.

Arozarena seems to always step up against the Astros but I read somewhere that Mariner fans are happy to see him gone due to defensive liabilities.

Bad fielder, but one of the best offensive players in the league this year. He was their offense last season. They're going to miss him a ton.

I think HB would be too much to overcome and be able to compete. We'd need to go sign Skubal, not Gallen.

I do agree that radical changes need to be made.

I am willing to go through a couple of bad years if what we get for Brown is worth it. I just think it is senseless to let he and Pena leave without getting more than a compensatory draft pick for them. Since they are both Boras clients, we are VERY unlikely to re-sign them in FA, so if we can't get them extended, we should be getting whatever we can for them.

Agree that he's an offensive weapon. He'd be perfect for jacking home runs into the Crawford Boxes. Does that outweigh his defensive problems?

I get that, then it's probably not worth spending money on Dubon and Gallen. If things fall right and we find someone who can walk a very fine line, we may be able to complete and rebuild. It'll be very challenging tho.

With a reload mindset, I think a year like the Guardians had would be the stretch goal for the Astros at this point. Sneak into the postseason and pray for a hot streak.

(And for the record, I hate that strategy with a burning passion)

It is definitely a fine line to tread. I don't necessarily want to do a complete tear down and rebuild. But somebody has to play SS and we would need to get pitching to replace HB if we traded him. I am not sure we could afford Dubon on a limited budget after the year he just had, but he would be a really nice tool to pair with Allen to give Altuve and Correa some days off (or God forbid to cover injuries). I mainly just hate to keep seeing guys walk with very little compensation in return. I know that is the nature of the game today for most teams, but with the Dodgers bidding up the price of any decent FA, we aren't going to be able to buy our way back to the dynasty years. The smart move is to deal the guys you don't expect to re-sign like we did with Tucker.
