Yeah, Bob Simpson got divorced in 2017. And they shelled out a franchise record in salary to finish 6 games below .500 and 23 games back. I call this "Tom Hicks Part 2". Hicks didn't divorce, but he did take a financial hit from his other businesses (so a personal wallet hit either way). And they both seemed to react harshly and really pull back after spending a lot of money on a loser.

Hicks didn't buy Liverpool until 2007. It did eventually play a role in sinking him to bankruptcy, but he already pulled back on Rangers payroll in the early 2000s after he spent big money on losing teams and the economy went through the early 2000s challenges with the dotcom bust. Then Liverpool and the 2008 crisis did him in.

Money spent on losing teams, a divorce, and lower oil prices are all tag-teaming with the current group.
