I'm curious if there were any talks about trading Gafford to LAL. Seems like the Mavs would have moved him for way cheaper than what they just did with Kessler. Gafford isn't a "long term" piece, but what is long term for LAL right now? If things detonate and Luka leaves then they are done either way.
The Lakers will still be good next year if Luka is up and playing, but they are putting too much workload on him. Luka keeps getting played heavy minutes (4th in the NBA), picking up injuries, then have people saying he will never be healthy. Don't build a roster that requires any one player to play 37 minutes per game to make work. That is asking for trouble. These LAL roster moves could be good for the Mavs starting 2029 and beyond.

I like the trade on its face (Aldama has improved every season in the league and will provide some comfort to De Larrea but I don't understand why we got ANOTHER PF/C?

Also do not forget that Warriors pick is protected, so it's really not a first.
Aldama is a nice player but it feels like we gave up a pick or two too many for saving them like $15 million in salary.

Does this Aldama deal make Lively more expendable? You have Morez, the traditional athletic, defense first rim running big. Then you grab a pretty good stretch 4/5. Not saying lively ain't valuable still, but is he expendable?

Aldama is kind of weird. He is 7' but not super strong. He is better as an interior defender and not very good as a perimeter guy. He's been a decent shooter for his size - but pretty consistently 35-36%. Nothing that knocks your socks off. He's a good passer and connector. As a shooter, he is kind of a corner merchant and sucks from the wings, but does hit at 36% from the top of the arc. 26% from each wing and takes a lot there for some reason. At the rim, he is pretty average. Doesn't do any mid-range. His FT rate is pretty low for what should be a stretch 4. 68% for his career.
Just happy we gave up and first round pick (yea I know it's protected) for a player who….[checks notes] can't really dribble or shoot. We needed another one of those.

1. When he was teammates with Jay Huff, I think they had a running count on who could do the most reverse dunks in the season.
2. He's the kind of player that does arm hooks to hold an opponent, and then when things get heated, backs away like he's innocent.
