This klay buy out is poopy. Wish we at least got something of value for him.

I think it's worth it for the second round pick or two, and you hope Jovic can stay healthy and develop. Miami feels so strongly about him that they didn't want to give him up. There is pedigree there.

It's just really hard to do a trade like that especially since the Mavs don't want salary stretching into next year. However I don't see the rush since they really could have waited until February or so to buy him out. I am guessing he must have given back a good chunk of salary in the buy out?


Klay reportedly told front office he wants to play for a contender.....then signs with the Heat who may top out at 3rd in the east, but are another Giannis injury from a 29 win team.

We needed to clear a roster spot. We have too many players currently even with buying Klay out.

I don't think Miami would have attached picks to Jovic. He's high risk, high reward.

Not sure who else the Mavs could have gotten in a trade from places Klay would have wanted to go.

Lakers: no real trades available
GSW: Don't have good salaries for trades and are 1st apron hard capped.
Philly: 1st apron hard capped and don't have contracts
LAC/CLE: you could have maybe gotten in on the Max Strus trade, but I would prefer Strus to Klay for the Clippers. Both are ending and Klay likely doesnt want to go to LAC's dumpster fire
BOS: No good contracts to include.
IND: I like his fit there, but no good contracts to move
Minn: Josh Green is the only guy that makes sense, but they can't aggregate him and they need to add salary to make it work. Plus they may want the shooter that is a decade younger.
NYK: They aren't trading their big 5 and no one else makes over 5M.
POR: Not sure Klay wants to go there, but they need shooting. The only contract that really makes sense is Scoot. Not sure how they feel about dumping him, I would guess they want something back.

Just not sure there were any teams willing to attach a pick to take him, at least a team that Klay would want. I just can't see a good move. Maybe if you were willing to take back an awful contract like Poeltl, but I wouldn't take that on even for a 1st. Same with Patrick Williams.

Mavs are under the luxury tax, not just the 1st apron.

Tax threshold is ~198M.

Active roster is ~178 and dead money is Klay (~9M, 1M, and JaVale 2M.)

So 12-13M in space under the luxury tax to make some deals.
