At midnight tonight, the NBA calendar officially flips to the 2026-27 season.

What a bizarre 18 months it's been. Last year I started this thread talking about how the basketball gods had thrown Mavericks fans an unexpected life raft in the form of Cooper Flagg after what was arguably the most catastrophic self-inflicted wound in franchise history. The Luka trade had driven half the fanbase to therapy and the other half to eBay to list their season tickets.

Fast forward one year and...the adults are finally back in charge. Nico Harrison is gone after somehow turning a generational superstar into what will likely become one of the worst asset management case studies in NBA history. Anthony Davis is gone after spending more time on the injury report than the court. Jason Kidd is physically gone after being mentally absent for months.

For the first time since February of 2025, it actually feels like this franchise has hit the reset button. Enter Dusty May.

Hiring a first-time NBA coach is always a gamble, but I honestly love the swing. Coming off a national championship at Michigan, he's known for developing young players, modern offensive concepts, and building an actual culture; all things this franchise desperately needs. The fact that one of his first draft picks is Morez Johnson Jr., a player he already coached at Michigan, makes the transition even more intriguing.

Speaking of the roster...Cooper Flagg is now unquestionably the face of the franchise. The keys have officially been handed over, and honestly, that's exactly where they belong. Everything the Mavericks do from this point forward should revolve around maximizing his timeline.

The other fascinating storyline is the absurd financial flexibility. Depending on how everything shakes out, Dallas has roughly $46 million in cap space. That's enough to chase a star, absorb contracts from teams looking to cut salary, or completely reshape the roster around Flagg. Add in the very real possibility that Klay Thompson, PJ Washington, and Daniel Gafford are all moved, and this could be one of the most active offseasons we've had in years.

Any rumor feels believable.

As for expectations...I have absolutely no idea what this roster is going to look like by October. And honestly? That's kind of exciting. A year ago our conversations centered around whether the franchise had permanently destroyed itself. This summer we're debating who gets added, what kind of system Dusty installs, and what Flagg's Year 2 leap might look like. That's a much healthier place to be.

This season probably won't be judged by wins alone. It'll be judged by direction.
Do the Mavericks finally establish an identity?
Does Flagg take the leap from future superstar to present superstar?
Can Dusty May prove college success translates to the NBA?
Can the front office capitalize on the kind of cap flexibility contenders dream about instead of lighting it on fire?

There are still plenty of questions. But for the first time in a long time, they feel like the fun kind. The terrorist regime of Nico and Kidd is officially over. The Cooper era officially begins.

Now let's see what this franchise actually wants to be when it grows up.

Let's get this started.

Hopefully we can keep Bagley on the biannual, but there's probably a team willing to give him more.

The center market sucks ass right now, so Bagley may get more than you expect.

Jock Landale got $14M and Rob Williams got 3y45M. Lot of money for backups, and especially considering Rob's injury problems.

The Mavs not having control of their pick the next four seasons makes team building tricky. But it is mostly the OKC swap in the 28 draft that is the sticking point. If you could get that back then team building would be straight forward. If they owned that pick then I would go for 3 ping-pong balls in both 27 and 28. The 27 draft is weak but you would still have some real odds at keeping a Top 2 pick. Then 28 would be the last high draft pick in the Flagg era. Could use the next 2 years for clearing cap space, developing on the fringes, plus growth for players under 24 year old. But unfortunately you need to try to be good starting by the 27-28 season. The question is, can you try to compete for the playoffs but still grow and attain an under 25 year old core with limited draft capital. You will really have to hit on the fringes to pull it off.

One of several reasons I'd love to make a deal with OKC for Cason. Develop him in a larger playmaking role over the next couple years. Framework could be something like PJ and Max for Cason and Caruso. See if we can get our swap rights back in '28 and possibly have to send out a future pick. I'm doing what I can to hold on to that Lakers '29 pick though, because that could be a decent first round pick as Coop is entering his prime.

Sounds like Kawhi is headed back to Toronto. Clippers are officially in rebuild mode. Makes you wonder if Garland is on the table for them next. Just doesn't make a ton of sense imo to carry him.

He's only 26 and they have to have some salary.

I am sure the Clippers would trade Garland or Ingram if they got a good deal. I don't Garland, Ingram, Wagler, and DJJ is scaring anyone. Which sucks because OKC still has their pick next year.

Galaxy brain move to be one of the 3 worst teams and lower OKC's chance for a top pick.

This new front office has been very stealth and leak free thus far. There is very little chatter on the Mavs.
Vessel

I understand that, but for the entire league, basically nothing has happened yet.

Used to be that you had a flurry of announced agreements basically as soon as the clock struck free agency.

Dean Wade to the 76ers on 4 for $39 million. Good deal for them.

I understand we aren't really in the position to just sign winning players like this, but still would have made for good basketball watching.

He and THJ are close to the same player. But Miami needs all the help they can get. Also they have hard cap issues which don't mesh well with the depth issues.. They stop have to be the favorite

Lakers giving up 2 unprotected firsts and 2 swaps while also paying Kessler $130 million over 4 years. Emptying the cupboard to satisfy Luka.

And no assets to acquire all the D&3 wings needed to cover for his and Reaves defense

Who demands out first: Luka or Ant?
Vessel

Ant's team is better, and it's not particularly close. Their fans are also much more attached to him than Lakers fans are to Luka. But Ant has to live in Minneapolis, so that's the wild card.

Lakers also just gave Mamu 4/$52 million and Grimes 4/$60 million... The Mamu money is maybe understandable but that's a wild overpay for Grimes.

And they just announced Sexton at 2/$19 million.

I don't see how the talent works really.

Sexton is worse that Luka and Reaves at defense.

Guards: Luka, Reaves, Bronny, Sexton

Their wings are:

Camm Carr (I like him, but rookie)
Grimes
Knecht
Thiero
LaRavia

Bigs:
Kessler
Ayton
Mamu
Vanderbilt
