There's no way Kawhi doesn't retire if his contract is voided. This guy has made his entire NBA existence about getting the bag. His options right now if his contract is voided is retire or be forced to have another season like last year while making 10x less than what he was making in order to get one last bag. I can't imagine he puts himself through having to play 60+ games again next season in the hopes that he gets one last big contract. I also don't see many teams jumping on throwing that kinda money at a 36 yo chronically injured star with a history of causing trouble for the teams he plays for.

Kinda depends on what he thinks about his legacy. Spurs have his number to Harper. He only played for the Raptors for 1 year. He destroyed the Clippers franchise.

Playing for the Raptors is really the only way he can be beloved anywhere. They were all thrilled to get him back even though he screwed them 7 years ago. He still plays at a high level when he plays and probably wants to make back some of the money lost.. Money and status has always been important to him..

It's a weird situation since no one has any real money left to give him if his contract is voided. And no one is going to have real money next off-season either, he'd be more likely to get an MLE type deal next year IMO then anything approaching a max deal because he won't have Bird rights letting his own team go over to keep him which also rules out S&T options that could max him out.

I don't think he'd consider retirement, but if the league voids his contract, then they are essentially minimizing his earning power going forward by tens of millions of dollars. Which, is probably what they want to do in order to send a message to other players about why they shouldn't accept no-show deals like this to circumvent the cap.

Yeah and the Raptors were going to give him a 2y extension.

Say they gave him same thing as clippers: 2y100M total. That's about 28-29% of the cap when he can get 35%.

Plus losing this years salary of 50.

Raptors need to clear some salary to give him the full MLE of 15.

Then next year he could get a raise of 120%.

So he could klaw back about 50M of 150M over three years. Assuming his body holds together and they still want him after each season.

Also, with his sneaker deal being up in October and Curry landing that $400M deal last year, he's probably going to be making in the neighborhood of 75-100M/year in endorsement money, so taking a cut to make sure we keep Harper and Castle makes sense from a basketball standpoint

Never having been offered 250 million dollars to do my job, I'm not sure how I would feel only taking 200 million instead, but if it led to a better work environment, sure why not.

The better way forward if the players really feel like this is to renegotiate what a "max contract" entails next time the CBA is up for negotiation. I think even the top level guys are aware that them making 75 million a year is nice, but not super helpful for building a winning team around them. Set the limit at 25% for traditional max and 30% of the cap for super max players and I think that also opens back up the middle class contracts we used to see a bit more.

I think the way forward is that home grown players count as a max of 25% towards their cap, even if they sign a 30-35%. Maybe 20-25% knocks down 4% and 15-20% knocks down 3%.

Teams still pay the money but the overage doesn't count towards apron rules.

Similar to vet minimum. Jordan Clarkson signed a 3.9M vet min, but it only counts 2.5M to the aprons - same as 2y players. That's so teams aren't dissuaded from signing vets.

Same, I literally already take a large pay cut working with my group compared to some of the other local groups, but I have more respect for honest financial structures, the friendship I have with many of my colleagues, and the flexibility they give me having been with them for nearly a decade. After a certain amount, money only goes so far to improve lifestyle. I'd prefer to have career longevity working with people I enjoy working with rather than burning out early.

This is how dynasties are built. Yes the best players deserve to get their bread but to sacrifice a little bread for the legacy or championships is huge. It's what separated Brady from the rest same with Timmy

Secretly hoping this leads Castle and Harper to sign the 25% max (maybe its not likely for either of them to qualify for the supermax) because i could actually see the Spurs paying those 3 guys 75% of the cap if they would all take it. Really stuck in my head the way Brad Stevens was like "we were going to be paying 70% for 2 guys" and I dont think most fans realize the hard choices that will be made in 2 years' time.

I think that's why Castle will eventually be the odd man out. We can't give 75% to 3 players and expect to be legit title contenders over the long term.

I don't think this eventually is coming soon, but like what we are seeing with OKC, that first year having 3 max players on your team really forces you into some tight spots. So probably 3 more years until we really have to face this, but no way all 3 stay together unless Castle takes a deal that looks more like Devin's.
