You know the story. Kawhi is using us and Toronto as leverage to get money out of the Clippers. They don't want to guarantee a ton of money to a 35yo player that has averaged 44 games over his last 9 seasons.

The Spurs will not be an expensive team in 2026-27 but will be extremely expensive within two years once Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper and Carter Bryant all become extension eligible.
Thus, they have an obvious incentive to wipe out Champagnie's cheapo team option for the coming season and sign him to a new contract for descending dollars, instead of waiting until he's an unrestricted free agent in 2027 and then paying full freight.
That likely entails committing to something like five years and $100 million or so, i.e. paying him just south of nine figures in new money in addition to the team option and spreading that money over five seasons. To further smooth the cap hit, San Antonio could start the contract at its maximal value and decline his salary by 8 percent each season.

Pretty weak PF market. I just don't know that Dean provides the shooting this team needs to really move the needle.

Is Porzingas going to definitely re-sign with Golden State? I would give him the full MLE for a couple years. I know its unlikely but he would fit great next to Wemby.
Let Bryant get a ton of minutes in the regular season with Porzingas getting enough minutes to gel with the starters. Then come playoffs he ramps up. Try to keep him healthy for two months for a championship run.
A 5 of Wemby, Porzingas, Vassell, Castle, Harper would be incredible on both sides of the ball.
Quote:
Let Champ play out this season and show his value or not before signing him next year for $15M if he performs and under $10M if he doesn't or let him walk. There is a decent chance Bryant develops or Whomever we pick up as a FA at PF solves the PF problem for us better than paying Champ $15-20M.
If Champ will sign for $10M per year now then give it to him.
Backcountry Birds said:
Dean Wade would be a defensive upgrade for sure, but probably a downgrade on shooting. His 3pt percentage is nice, but that's on about 3 attempts per game. Think wide open corner 3's vs Julian who took about double that this year. I might actually prefer Kenrick Williams over him.
Quote:
I think you have to keep Champ if Wade/Williams is our big PF move. I'm sure Champ has some trade value, but PF just seems like the hardest position to find. I don't know that there is a realistic PF trade target out there for our assets. Champ is too low on value, Fox contract too high. Maybe if we involve Keldon, but his playoff performance probably lowers his value a bit.
Quote:
I think most likely is we use free agency for a low usage, wade type player or a damaged goods player (like Porzingas) or maybe even an aged vet player (Batum) that wants one more shot at a championship that can maybe give us a few critical minutes from in the playoffs, then hope Bryant comes on.
What's funny about Bryant, is it's almost better for the Spurs if he doesn't come on to his potential too fast.
If he's our starting PF by the end of the year it's a huge blessing and a huge curse.
