as an aside, while its awesome that my 12 year old kid is super hyped about basketball and gives me constant updates about what People On Youtube think about the NBA, he's also starting to talk like a youtuber.

A lot of the moves this offseason have been good for the Spurs. We want the East to be more rugged. NY just cake walked to the finals last year, but now you have Philly and Miami taking pretty big steps forward and you'd think that Boston, Detroit and Cleveland should all be fairly solid as well. If Kawhi actually ends up in Toronto then you have to think about them as a much improved team at least for next year.

Which of course takes us to our other benefit, the more good teams in the East the more likely we are to see the Hawks in some kind of lottery position. And with the flattened odds, it doesn't really matter where they land as long as they are somewhere in the lottery.

I dont think there's a scenario where the LeBron hater doesnt criticize him regardless of where he goes. I do feel, the better the roster, the more criticizm and thats where we are at with him going to Philly.

Having said that, as a basketball fan I've been spoiled watching Lebron play. A different level of greatness than Jordan, in my opinion...I don't care who the goat is, Jordan was the goat of his era, Lebron is the goat of his era. I will be sad to watch him leave the game as an active player.

Having said that, if he didn't wanna ride shotgun with Wemby for a couple years and cash out a couple of easy rings, eff him and his mama.

Anything he is going to do is going to be criticized, but I think you can spend going back to Cleveland better and I don't think Cleveland is as good as Philly.

If he went to Cleveland he can say this is where I started my life. This is where I started my career and this is where I want to end my career and I think that makes a lot of sense.

The only thing he can say about going to Philly is that he's ring chasing.

I think if you took the minimum to go back to the Lakers or to Cleveland or to Miami all looks better than going to Philly where he's just ring chasing

Cleveland also got swept. And they lost their two best Wing defenders. They are a worst team now than they were in the playoffs because they had to cut salary.

Cava lost Dean Wade and Keon Ellis and replaced both with a second round pick. They got worse and they got bounced in a sweep

The East got considerably more challenging since the offseason started. Is it safe to say Kawhi still ends up in Toronto?

I still think the league will void Leonard's contract and he will sign for whatever Toronto has available. It honestly works out better for Toronto and that's probably a good thing because Kawhi screwed them just not as bad as he screwed us.

The league can take away draft picks and I do think the league in this case should take away draft picks from the Clippers and give one to the Raptors and one to us. Uncle Dennis was getting paid under the table back before Leonard got traded to Toronto. League will never do that though.

The Clippers Raptors trade was never completed because the league can void Leonard's contract so the Raptors refused to go through with the trade. They still want him but since the trade hasn't been done, rosters haven't changed

When the league was investigating Leonard, they found that there was a second endorsement deal that was a no-show that Leonard had as well and so they expanded the scope of the investigation, which is one of the reasons why it's taking so long

I think they will be a play in team. The East is interesting because they went from five tanking teams to no tanking teams. The Bulls COULD tank, but they went out and got Nic Claxton and Norm Powell, which is not something you do if you are tanking. I think they will still be not so good because Caleb Wilson, Noa Essengue, and Matas still have a lot of development to do, but their team is starting to make more sense.

Brooklyn isn't tanking because Houston owns their pick, but I don't think they will be good. I also think they will make trades mid-season.

Milwaukee won't be tanking because they don't own their own pick (NOLA has best of NOLA/MIL and Hawks have worst of NOLA/MIL.)

My very early East ranking is:

1. Philly
2. NYK
3. Boston
4. Toronto
5. Detroit
6. Indiana
7. Miami
8. Cleveland
9. Orlando
10. Washington
11. Atlanta
12. Charlotte

I think the East is going to be tough this year, and especially the fight for that last play-in spot. I could even see Charlotte make a run at it. Charlotte may have some addition by substraction going on and they got a lot bigger and stronger by adding Naz and Steinbach to go with Diabete and Kalkbrenner. Plus Royce ONeale and Grayson Allen should be better veteran leaders than Miles Bridges and LaMelo Ball.

Indiana also should have the juice to be a top 3 team if Hali comes back all the way.

I think there is a 75% chance the Hawks pick is in the lottery this year. I just can't trust a team with CJ McCollum running point and no rim protectors to be great. They don't have a 1A guy and despite NAW+Dyson+Dort at defense, everyone is kind of specialized and NAW is really the only two way player on the team. Everyone is either great or awful at defense with no in between.

On Hoops Collective, they discussed how OKC probably could have sent Lu Dort (and Wiggins) to a lot of places, but because the Spurs will receive the Hawks pick, it is to OKC's benefit to send them to Atlanta. I found that insightful.

I can see that being the case, but also the Hawks were one of the fwe teams that could absorb that much salary without sending anything back. It gives them more wing depth, but they are still weak on the front court. Wiggins is 190lbs and Dort is 6'2.

I just feel it is kind of a disjointed team. NAW is a two-way player. Daniels and Dort are defensive players that suck on offense. McCollum and Johnson are awful on defense, but solid on offense. Okongwu is ok on defense and was shooting well last year, but he is just 6'8. I think other teams are just so much more well rounded. East will be tough.

This is the kind of team I build in Basketball GM when I know I need to blow it up but next year's draft is a pile of dookie so I'm just gonna punt for this year and hope for the best.
