Now, why would I screw you? Have you seen my wife? Actually, if you went to the Auburn Yell Practice -- you would have had to see my wife. She was on the field.....
I thought Reveille was MIA....

The fact that Rojo has come on here about 10 times and addressed the "people who don't think we need a change at OC" (who tf is arguing we don't need a change at OC) makes me think he's kind of dense... It's weird.

My theory on Rojo is that he actually has a source but that the source might be leading him to believe he has more insider knowledge than he really does. People do that for attention sometimes (reference this thread for an example)

Hope he knows something and is right, as long as its not Mangino!

I don't think we are as far along at Rojo is suggesting but we are getting a new OC. He is right on BMAs. They are only counting SEC Championships and playoff appearances. They are very motivated to get there and unhappy with our present circumstances.

Don't look at our overall W-L. The SEC record is what matters and our present SEC record at home makes it worse. They just spent 1/2 billion dollars on Kyle and then we lost to a pitiful Auburn team. When BMAs see those kind of "on the field" results, they begin to question how they are spending their money.

Holy smokes. It's Gus Malzahn.

Iowa State = Cyclones
Kansas/Yellow Brick Road = Tornado
Tulsa = Golden Hurricane
Tulsa = Malzahn
Auburn midnight yell = Malzahn
Crazy wife = Malzahn
Can't beat em, hire em = Malzahn

Auburn is going to fire Malzahn and we are going to hire him as OC. It's gonna be huuuuuuuuge.

Malzahn is safe because of his contract, but Rhett Lashlee, his long-time OC is out of there.

It's really hard to tell because Malzahn is the play-caller, not Lashlee.

Another situation like Kirby Smart and Saban. Who deserves the credit??

Malzahn sucks so much attention and oxygen, an evaluation of Lashlee's talents requires some inside knowledge.

Listening to an interview with Kevin Kelly... I may get burned for saying this. We need to shake things up a bit and bring this guy in as OC. As newcomers in the SEC, we are trying to conform to the game as it exists in the conference. There are 13 other teams that are trying to do the same and 12 of them have been at it for a decades longer. If we're going to shake things up, we need to make a bold move and bring in an innovative play caller and offensive mind. His offensive success is no fluke, it's backed by sound statistics and strategy. And what a recruiting tool...

In my book, this is the only hire that could be considered HUGE.

Insights from the Bill James(or Billy Beane) or college football.

-never punt
-always onsides

At least we wouldn't pull an Aggie anymore and waste away in mediocrity. It would be the football promised land or we burn our program to the ground. Either one is a chance for greatness, either for the present staff or for Sumlin's replacement.

Why? Because we like a guy that actually uses analytics to determine his game plan? That always plays the odds in every situation?

If that's what you want, hire Bob Stitt.

quote:
"I treat fourth-down conversions as a turnover," Stitt told me in 2012. "We were 58 percent on fourth down [in 2012], went for 36 of them. Our opponents went for 18. We're a lot higher percentage than 58 when it's fourth-and-5 or less. I'll even go for it on fourth-and-8 when it's a situation where we're on the 50 or their 40.

"That's a turnover! If you get it, it's like the defense just got you the ball on their 50-yard line. We've got to be able to have confidence as an offense that - hey, when we get around the 50, Coach is gonna go for it and the defense has to have it in their head that, hey, they're gonna go for it, and if they don't get it, we have to get excited and make sure the opponent doesn't get points out of it.

"Man oh man, it's horrible for the opponent's defense to get you on third down, and they're all cheering, and then they stay out there. 'Oh no, we've gotta stop them again.' And then you get the first down. If it's third-and-long, the QB knows to take what the defense gives them because Coach is probably going for it on fourth."

I am not going to claim to know what is similar and what contrasts between Stitt and Kelly... Worth looking into though. What impresses me about Kevin Kelly is that he's lead his team to an undefeated season as a head coach while laying a major beat down on Highland Park and others in the process. More importantly, his game plan goes beyond just going for it on 4th down past a certain yard marker.

For example, Kelly treats kickoffs as offensive opportunities... Instead of having two or three different onside kick plays, he incorporates a number of different packages, putting guys in motion, etc. Prepping for defensing this takes valuable practice time away from opposing teams because they, in turn, have to install a number of kick return packages. All this while still trying to prepare for a team that has an "extra offensive down" to work with. I know this falls into the realm of special teams and not under the OCs jurisdiction. It's just telling of his philosophy and how he looks to maximize every opportunity and turn it into an offensive one.

Furthermore, when you shorten the field of play for your defense, you effectively cut down the potential amount of time they are out on the field for any given possession. On the surface it sounds counter-intuitive. That being said, how many times have we seen a defense continuously get drug down field 70-80 yards and hold the opposition to field goals early in the game, only to be too gassed at the end to step up when it counts in the end.

Being able to negate this defensive wear and tear over the course of a season, all the while incorporating an offensive scheme to maximize every possession with a potentially hi-powered offense???? Sounds like it's worth the risk.

And IF it fails, there's always the Bubble-Screen Wonder to fall back on :/

That's all fine and good until a defender hits you in the mouth repeatedly. See Spav's elaborate play design for an example.

Rojo is saying the actual hire will be announced after LSU. But he's saying the decision is made and the hire is in progress already.

Looch is saying no such decision has been made yet.
