Some, who have been silent too long, have questioned whether or not Texas A&M needs a new direction on the offensive side of the ball. Here is what is being told to me by my friends in low places:

The reason such a move is being forwarded is because of the direction A&M's offense has taken over the past two years: less yardage, less scoring, less plays, less excitement, less adjustments, less everything except sacks, turnovers, and bad play calling. The A&M offense enters the season with a playbook. The playbook never changes. No adjustments to take advantage of an opponents weaknesses, no adjustments to take advantage of A&M's receiving corps. Third and 17 and handing off up the middle on a play that has averaged a loss the previous four times? Given the position of our linemen's feet -- passing this time?

Our opponents have "the book" on the offense midway through the season and shut us down. We suffer a complete offensive melt down and score 0 or 3 points in critical games. Spav's solution? Switch QBs and adjust the offense to the new QB, thus removing the predictability from the offense that was in the books, and resuming a decent scoring capability. Happened in 2014. Happened in 2015.

Now, we may not be expected by some to beat Alabama, LSU, and/or Ole Miss every year - but scoring 0 or 3 points is NOT expected and no one who has just contributed to the $700 million investments in the football program is sitting idle to see it happen for 3 years in a row. Neither are Blue Chip prospects. One collapse happens. Two is a pattern. Three is a program. Looking at the situation objectively, one can ascertain that a change not only definitely needs to be made, it HAS to be changed. Sumlin, for whatever reason, likes the promise that Spavital shows. Whether that be from recruiting or his opinions that he gives during meetings during the week.

So, now Aggie fans have this mindset that Spav needs to be relieved of all his duties or at the bare minimum; demoted. Sumlin is NOT going to fire Spav. He probably won't even publicly demote him. I'm thinking Sumlin brings in Holgersen (when and if he is let go from WVU) to "mentor" Spav, and to become "co-offensive" coordinator with Spav.

That's the most educated guess that one can simply come up with and really the only reasonable scenario that is plausible at this time.

If this is true, how is it not Sumlin's direct responsibility? He's an offensive coach - how could he have ceded so much authority to Spav and let this happen? Seems he would intervene directly to make sure the playbook was expanded / adjusted when needed.

Don't get me wrong. I think Sumlin is a fantastic coach. That's why I have a hard timetime believing he would just watch this happen.

John Gruden currently makes $6 Million a year at ESPN as an analyst. He has NO pressure and really NOBODY to answer to. Why would he take a pay cut, put pressure on himself, move to College Station, and work UNDER someone else. No way Gruden happens.
