I was as Texas A&M from 1984 to 1990. This thread reminded me what a eating out fool I was back then.
Archies 39cent Hamburger I always had enough money on my floor board to eat something at archies.
Beetle's BBQ I guess Beetles was my favoritedon't remember why?
Burger Boy Used for delivery when I was too lazy to cook a hamburger.really?
Chinese Fast Food One of my mainstaysvery cheap, fresh and good.
Cow Hop for a cow pie and fries I remember Brussels sprouts and sticky table tops.
Der Wienerschniztel Only ate there a few times when I was deep in Bryan.
Dixie Chicken Worked there for 2 yearsloved the death burger!
Double Dave's I remember eating with the offensive line guys and man could they put away pizza and beer.
Dudley's Draw They used to have sandwiches for lunch that were decent.
Fajita Rita's I was raised on the border so I thought FR was ok.
Fat Burgers Good
Fort Shiloh - Good
Flying Tomato Wednesday night they would have games for prizes. My roommate and I would trade them back in for free beer.good times.
Kettle on University late night studying
La Taqueria absolutely my favorite place to eat. Can't believe they closed down.
Moms Diner Ate there often until the owner got illmaybe she died I don't really remember.
Schlotzskys I thought Scholtzskys was great
The Grapevine - ok
Tom's BBQ miss eating off butcher paper
Deluxe Burger Bar The pecan waffles were really good. Surprised it shut down as well.
Yesterday's Loved that place. I remember tripping out when the owners wife told me she a foosball national champion.

As for shopping for food when I wasn't eating out. I went to apache meat market for meats, then next door to the farm patch and then the last stop at the Mrs. Bairds bread outlet on up the road. Anything else my roommate and I needed we shopped at Krogers.

Great list... There was a place not as old as these, mexican food restaurant located in front of what used to be Hurricane Harrys and the old movie theatre.

They served crawfish enchiladas that were some of the best I've had, been awhile so I forget the name. Think they were around in 1999, 2000 but out of business semi-quick.

I remember the name. Clicks on Texas ave. across from Schlotskys/The Kettle was a big hangout for me. Always had good drink specials and nice tables.

Ken Martin's steakhouse still there in Bryan? I recall El Chico on Texas Ave as well. Had cheap margs. Didn't say they were good but they were inexpensive for sure.

I was just thinking about the Cowhop this past weekend. Great place. Once they called your name three times the order was fair game.

I'm going leave it at that and see who else might know where I'm talking about. On a tight budget, the Cow Hop and Mom's were at the top of the rotation.

Moms was great for loads of food. Did you ever eat at Zarape's in Bryan?

Mom's was really good, I only ate there like twice, I think it closed in 87'.

I remember driving by it in 87' and the little house looked shut down, somebody later told that the main lady that took the money took ill and that was it.

Mom's was the best meat loaf I have ever had. Great tapioca pudding too.
Her Mexican food on Saturday night has NEVER been topped....CT's would hit that place in the 80's ...No way they made $$$ on Saturday night ...It was $5 all you could eat ...Home made ....Culinary delight

Dixie Chicken, Chicken Oil, J. Cody's, O'Bannons, Mad Hatters, The Tap, The Texas Hall of Fame (defunct), Midnight Rodeo (Daisy Dukes) ...

I think most of these are still around, but these were always my favorites for food, drink, and fun.

I was in on page 1 of this thing and have a bit more input:

1. Killer ag 89 beat me to it on p.6, but Los Nortenos had the best Tex-Mex in BCS. (Go watch L. Lovett's Front Porch Song video for a stroll thru 1980's Bryan, TX and you will see the old LN!)

2. Beef enchilada night at Moms was the best and on Wednesdays i believe

3. Longhorn Tavern had the best chicken fry!

4. Was in Carney's drinking an IPA with my newly turned 21 year old son this past weekend and how in the hell did they suck all the smoke out of that place?? Also, Joe supposedly is not pickled yet and lives in Houston..... Anyone know about Joe Carney... Is he still alive?

5. I drank many a free beer at Hastings!

6. The original W&W Wednesdays at D. Daves was $5 all you could eat and drink .... Backpacks full of rolls would leave that place in a drunken stuper.... Very dangerous.

7. Was not Cafe Eccel right across the street from LaTaq which backed up to the back of the The Deluxe on University?

8. Do they still serve Double-Death burgers at The Chicken?

9. In '86, what was the bar over by the Kinkos (or maybe iit became the Kinkos) about 3-5 blocks east of N. Gate/Chicken? Kind of a small place that was starting to play 80' alt dance music at that time? Had 25 cent Red Stripe nights during the week?? Anyone?? The ladies were very friendly there for that fall semester.

10. Anyone remember the night at the Ptarmigan when the Flaming DP found a sweet, big-haired 80's SB with plenty of flamable hair-spray? It was a sight to watch and caused a breif shutdown of sales of Flaming DPs moving forward!

Changes at North Gate still blow my mind.

7.....yes it was. But I seldom made it any farther than La Taq.

9.......you're killing me here......I know exactly the place but can't remember the name. Get back to you when my foggy memory clears

10......was not there that night but heard all about it. Everybody did. That was legend.

Thanks for the return trip down memory lane. CS will always be awesome but never as much as in the 70's/80's

Texags_89 and Dixieckn, I have your answer..... Rocco's. Still have a logo pitcher in my garage from that place. I knew the owners well. Eddie was an aspiring late twenties business man who always carried a briefcase (cash deposits?). Taking shots in the spinning barber chair was something everyone should have done once. Closed, remodeled and became a freaking Kinko's copy center.

Also, to help connect the dots for a couple of generations of posters, Youngblood's ( best chicken fried steak ever) closed and became Carney's Pub (late 80's tap beer hangout).

Hurricane Harry's in previous lives:
-The Mercury Bar (very cool place circa '87)
-BaJa Yacht Club (short-lived).

Yes, Double Dave's started in a very small shack with a deck on Northgate next to the theater. Buddy was a cook who called one day when they were about to throw away huge trays of uncooked, day-old rolls. We froze them and ate like kings that summer session.

Man, I miss La Taqueria and even Fajita Rita's. Someone mentioned that the FR guy now lives on Cayman? I always heard it closed for tax evasion and the Feds ran it for the last 2-3 successful years to try to recoup the loss. Could be rumor, though.

FWIW, I served and bartended at Gizmo's, the only place at Northgate with.a hard liquor license in the 80's. It's where the bartenders and servers came to drink.

Moms was 1 dollar. You handed it to the old lady that sat in a rocking chair on the way out. The food was awesome. Ralph's Pizza was the only place that would deliver on campus. The "**** Hut" next to the Campus Theater had so many Indians working there that more then once I bought a hamburger and walked back to the dorm only to find that they left the meat off . Meat was optional on a hamburger. Damn I'm old!

I was in the cayman's years back and went to that place you speak of. They had the same tables as they did while open in college station. I do miss the grapevine, fajita Rita's and la taqueria.

However fajita willies off 290 and west little York is just as good. I was hoping that willies here in college station in the old tgif buildings was going to be another fajita willlies but noooo it is just another average hamburger joint.

Bring in Fajita Willies and a jersey mike's and that's all I will need.

Flying Tomato was a fun place to hang out but the pizza was terrible. There was a sing along w/ "Sneaky Pete" once a week (Thursday?). They had a cool tomato shaped hot air balloon they floated around in at the games.

There was also a bar near the Taco Bell that had the "Bladderdust"... 1c beers and 5c wells 'til someone peed. The key was to stand near the restrooms so you could go in just AFTER the dude that ruins it.

There was a "dance club" in the corner of the strip mall old Schlotsky's and Clicks was located in, they used to have those same drink specials without the bladderbuster. Don't remember name as I only went there once or twice for the drinks and a date.

Pretty sure Baja Yacht Club had those specials as well, over where the overly religious people were protesting at the movie theatre.

That place and strip mall have changed so many times it's ridiculous.
