Dang I miss rolling

Me too. Bulging disk in my back middle of August. Recovered slightly. Got shingles.
While getting over the shingles pulled my back again. Found out I have mild scoliosis (14 degrees) which is a bummer.

Now the shingles are almost gone. Back is getting better, so hopefully I'm back training light again next week.
The scoliosis is what it is. I didn't even know I had it, so I will continue to proceed as normal & work on posture/proper lifting at all times. Going to add daily stretching & back exercises to my regimen. It's really all I can do at this point. Getting old is a blast.

No, I'm up in Keller but my company is headquartered in Dripping, and my boss trains there so I stop in for classes when I'm down there.

Last week I had an MRI on my shoulder. The cortizone shot I had not terribly long ago wore off fairly quickly so it was time to find out definitively what's going on in there. I got the results today and in addition to arthritis, tendonitis, and bursitis in my right shoulder I have a tear in the labrum. I have an appointment next week to see a shoulder specialist to see whether it makes sense to have surgery. It just stinks because it feels like there's no good option, either it continues to hurt or I get surgery which puts me out for a while. Basically it's the result of lifting weights so the catch 22 of lifting, which is good for your muscles, is bad for your joints so it's worn out. It just stinks as well because even though I've lifted for most of my life I've never been what I would consider to be strong, I might even consider myself below average to be honest compared to your average man who lifts regularly. Yet I have the signs of strain on my joints of someone who in theory should be older and stronger than me. I never got to where I thought I should be regardless of how much work I put into it.

Sorry for the pity party, just venting. Surgery feels unavoidable though since I can barely get through our pushups during the warmup and I can tell I'm just weaker these days.

Sorry to hear, in the same boat on pretty much everything and even have the same diagnosis. Spent around 6 months doing PT, shots, and anything else to prevent surgery but it's either deal with the pain the rest of my life (and never doing BJJ again) or get the surgery and spent 8+ months with rehab. After this much time I am going to get my surgery done so I can live the life I want to again

Man that sucks. Sorry to hear that.

I will say that regardless of this injury there's a couple guys who I know who might have had it worse. A couple months ago a guy tore his ACL because his sparring partner had a bad angle when going for an osoto gari. A few weeks ago a guy I've rolled with a lot tore his achilles in kick boxing class, non-contact injury. He planted and evidently the whole room heard it pop and he went down.

Tell me about it, without having the release of almost killing someone daily (more so them not killing me, just being honest) I had to take up meditation. Stupid old body

BJJ is my meditation. I've been dealing with anxiety and depression for many years and for some reason trying to stay calm while another man tries to stop me from being able to breathe, or dislocate my shoulder, snap my elbow, wrist, or ankle is what gives me clarity and helps my mental health. Work sucks right now, but I spent 90 minutes in class Monday night and Wednesday night and felt right in the head afterward, even if my body does not. That's why the possibility of surgery bums me out. We have a good community of guys my age at my gym, all respectful of each other's physical limitations.

But hey, golf isn't for all of us.

I went with the surgery a few years ago after a year and a half of shots (in both shoulders...I was able to rehab one into decent shape). It wasn't as bad as we thought when he got in there but I still had plenty of fraying and arthritis and a championship impingement. Recovery wasn't as bad as another buddy with a completely wrecked labrum, but it wasn't fun. I would do it again no question. I now tap absurdly early to shoulder locks (or set ups) or even if they can get it into a position I don't like.

Heavily looking into this as there are a couple of places close to me offering adult courses. As someone with no formal martial arts training and on the wrong side of 35, is this something you can get into at this point?

One of the guys on our competition team started at 51 and is now a 61 year old purple belt, small guy that rolls in the open class and rarely loses.

You can definitely start at 35 (and well past that).

I started at 36 years old (with no combat sports experience previously) and have been training/coaching regularly since then (I'm 53 now).

Age and physical conditioning will impact how often you train (and to extent the pace at which you train). But getting/staying in good shape and being smart about tapping early/often will help one train productively for a long time.

Got some good rounds in at a little garage gym a couple towns over tonight. Hadn't met these guys and was a little concerned I wrestled too much at lunch and wouldn't have the juice but I was ok.

Go train if you're thinking about it. Or come train with one of us.

The shoulder specialist I saw indicated it's a small tear in my labrum and wants me to try physical therapy for a while to see if I can see improvement, I started this week. I have some stretches to do twice a day at home. Luckily there's a physical therapy place about 5 minutes from my house. I'm apprehensive that it'll work but I'll gladly try anything if it might keep me from needing surgery. This was the first week of 6 that I'll be off the mats.

It's a bit comical to explain to an orthopedic specialist that a person my age willingly participates in an activity that targets their joints as a place to apply enough pressure as a means to get your opponent to quit.

Had my first really good roll after my back injury.
Looked down at my left middle finger and the last joint was just hanging there. I couldn't pull it back up. No pain or swelling at all, very weird. According to Dr. Google - it's something called "mallet finger" and more common in baseball. I damaged the ligament on the top of my middle finger basically.

I just buddy taped it to my ring finger and am headed to the Dr. this week. Why do I keep doing this sport???

Somehow it's worse if we don't.

How'd the back feel?
Apache

The back was good, rolls were better when I stopped worrying about it & focused the moment.
(Kind of a metaphor for life, no?)

Anyway I told everyone I was going to Ronnie Lott my finger and just get it amputated so I can keep rolling.
The wife shut that down for some reason.
Quote:

Lott faced a decision from doctors: put a pin in his finger and a cast over it and wait eight weeks for it to heal, or amputate the tip of the finger off from the first joint up and be able to play right away.

Sure enough, Lott picked option B, amputation, and parted ways with his pinky. Doctors numbed it, sliced it off and put it in a cast.
