It is a fun name for what is effectively a paper cutter choke during a stack pass. One hand on their deep on their far lapel, pulling it across the throat while the other hand is holding the top of his pants. The position ends up resembling how you would shake empty a trash can into a larger one.

This was not my plan going in, but he didn't defend it properly and paid for it.

I got caught with a similar choke by a blue belt recently. I was certain the choke wasn't working.....right up until the point that it did...and I was tapping. Was surprising and it worked well.

Got promoted on Saturday to Blue belt. Special day. We had our namesake and Master Dave Kama (one of the dirty dozen) in town for it too.

I had another in-house tourney last weekend.
7 guys in my heavy division... I finished 2-2.
Lost to the overall winner by 2 points in the first match, a five minute struggle.
Submitted the next two with a bow & arrow choke and lapel choke from back.

The last match I met the eventual 2nd place finisher who has a couple of years of Judo under his belt. I was gassed & he eventually submitted me with an Ezekiel choke. I had managed to escape his first try at the choke but lost focus & he nailed me on the second attempt.

Good Lord I feel like I've been in a car wreck. 4 hard matches is one too many for a soon to be 48 year old.

I spent the rest of the weekend watching Ezekiel escape videos, popping Advil & enjoying straight bourbon a little earlier in the afternoon than usual.

Congrats on a solid outcome in the tournament! Sounds like you did well! Competition format is rough, much tougher than regular rolling. And you're training harder than tons of folks on the mats by just doing those in-house format tournaments.

I rolled hard today (my 4th class in two days) with the 'big' side of the mat, and it was rough. I was definitely the oldest (50) and smallest (5'11", 175) on the big side and everything is sore now. Made the mistake of doing a cool down roll with a fairly new guy who outweighed me by at least 100 lbs...I picked up a couple scratches on my face, got kicked in the nuts and my neck is sore.

But I'll be back first thing tomorrow!!!

Got mine last night along with several other great guys that all started roughly the same time as I did.
After starting in Dec. '19 with a couple of layoffs due to Covid & a shoulder injury it was very fulfilling.

Our "blue belt" group has discussed the high rate of dropout at the belt level & we all vowed to hold each other accountable to continue the journey to purple. Truthfully I couldn't see us stopping.... we're all roughly the same age & place in life and have perhaps benefited more from the camaraderie than the jiu-jitsu.

If you're reading this thread & thinking about starting... DO IT!

Looks like my school is getting back into the swing of things now that Covid is almost a thing of the past. Our class had 3 black belts, 2 brown belts, 2 purple belts, 5 blue belts, and 3 experienced white belts. The number of quality rolls was incredible!

Congrats, Apache! Yeah, Blue Belt is where many people just suddenly go missing for various reasons.....but holding one another accountable for continuing to train is a great idea.

In terms of numbers, there are more people at my school now than prior to Covid....classes are so big at night I've started going to the morning and afternoon classes instead. It's a good thing to see so many new people trying BJJ.

Yesterday was funny for me....was rolling well with a variety of folks and feeling great. Then I rolled with my instructor and he submitted me easily, multiple times, barely even trying. No double reverse berimbolos , leg locks, or anything like that....just 'basic' BJJ that you learn at white/blue (just executed perfectly).

This morning's class was a real kick in the nuts. I'm an "experienced" white belt and got destroyed by 2 blue belts and a purple belt. Normally I can hold my own, but this week has been a gut punch. I'm sure we all have weeks were you feel like you're regressed significantly due to whatever reason (mind not in it, fatigued, diet, etc). But boy was I dejected when I left.

Yeah, had weeks and even months where I felt like I was going backward. It's part of the journey, and the ups and downs will continue to trend up as long as ya' keep at it (and also ask coaches and training partners for feedback to see if you're making obvious mistakes).

One other possibility......a lot of upper belts don't roll very hard with white belts at first. The upper belts will give white belts room to work, opportunities to try the move of the day, work on their defense, etc....just to be a good training partner. But when the white belt starts getting better, the upper belt will start turning up the heat and rolling harder.

So it may feel like you're going backward sometimes, but often you're actually going forward and getting better quickly, and the more experienced folks ahead of you are now having to roll harder, use their 'A game', etc. So it can give the impression you're regressing, even when you're progressing.

As a blue belt, I can vouch for rolling with white belts a little easier at first so as not to break their confidence.

One thing I notice about myself is I don't grip hard, or pressure hard. It's like I don't want to feel like a jerk but have no problem with people doing it to me. I'm 225 lbs and probably one of the strongest guys at any given time, but I play soft. I'll use my strength to protect myself, but not to break a guard or grip the gi, etc.

This week was also because I'm on a cutting diet so a little tired already.

Apache.....I only turn it up against white belts in two situations: 1) They are getting better or 2) They try to open closed guard by using that dumb 'elbow dig into the thighs' method...then it's ON... prepare to be swept and submitted...J/K.....

After 3-4 years of Muay Thai I have joined a BJJ gym. I'm working out of my area and Muay Thai wasn't available.

Definitely an adjustment to go from striking to rolling. Have to get used to the rules etc.

White belts present you with a couple opportunities:

1. They are as close as it gets to an encounter with someone in real life who doesn't know what they're doing.
2. Practicing techniques you're not up to par on. Flying berimbolo? Hell yeah.

White belts are the most dangerous though. Stray elbows/knees/feet etc. No mercy in my opinion. Whip up on them. Ask them if they have any questions after and move on.

Gi question...

I did my first competition as a white belt this last weekend. Ended up getting cross collar choke from guard twice (my fault completely and already worked with my coach this morning on things to fix).

After the match though someone came up and said I should get a different gi. I have an Origin and they said they are notorious for not having any give in the lapel.

Any opinions on this? I love the fit and feel of the gi. It's lightweight material which is great as my gym gets pretty hot especially in the summer. Any other gi recommendations?

I dunno, if you got collars, and you don't defend them, you will probably get choked regardless of the brand of gi.

Now, if you are just looking for an explanation that you can sell to your SO for when they see the Shoyoroll/Albino and Preto line item on the next credit card statement, then yes, Origin Gi's are very prone to chokes and it is definitely not user error.

More than I need and less than I want. Same answer for rash guards as well.

I have 5 Gi's but only train 3 days a week in the Gi. The other 2-3 days a week are no-gi.

I only have 2 & train 3 days a week.

I started my first No-Gi work this past Saturday with a couple of other new blue belts.
My head started spinning like my first day as a white belt. Gone are my collar chokes & nice gi to grip on.
Enter Anaconda & Darce chokes, butterfly guard & sweep. I was aware of these things but we didn't really work on them in the gi. Glad to be learning!

I have three grimy white ones. People use them to choke me. A lot.

Waiting on a black one from origin to come in the mail.

I have a pile of rash guards.

I usually turn it on with white belts when they are using psycho animal strength. My rule of thumb is that I will match your intensity. If you're a bodybuilder or a fat guy and try to smother me or stack my guard and hurt my neck, I will wristlock the hell out of you. Those type of guys always put their hands right on your neck and chest while they're trying to stack you into opening your guard. Wristlock them and their weight is shifted too far forward to get out or back.

I actually don't mind elbows in the thighs. My go-to guard is half guard so they're just walking into a trap anyway.

Just saw where Gordon Ryan retired a few weeks ago and no reading that the Danaher Death Squad is breaking up. On the bright side, there's rumors Ryan & Danaher are going to open a school in Austin.

Yeah, I saw that. Disappointed to see that, but not surprised. With all the success they've had, guess it makes sense for the team to start going different ways.

From a team and concept standpoint, those guys were about as dominant as any team ever...especially Gordon Ryan. He can be polarizing, but he is/was an amazing grappler.

That'd be interesting if they open up a school in Austin. Several high level competitors I know have trained with Danaher up at Renzo's and said he's an absolute genius.

It works, the problem is you shouldn't do this because the defense is "pushing" that punch choke across from the back side of the arm. If you're the guy on the bottom you end up panicking and the "push" ends up being a punch and if you land it just right you'll break the guy's arm. Even if your arm is bent out enough you can still "push" off the side the arm and do some damage.

I only do this in someone's guard so they can try and address the threat, then I can release the punch choke quickly and hope there's an opening somewhere to get out of their guard.

Yeah, I saw that and remembered that you train at his school. Crazy to see it work at black belt.

On a general training related note, I went back to back days of wrestling training this weekend. 5 minute rounds. No guard pulling, no rolling. Just takedowns. As soon as we hit the mat for score, back up. All nogi. And damn it was hard!!

Trained with a very savvy brown belt with great technical skills and a strong, explosive purple belt with great standup. Both guys about my size (5'11", 170) and both guys about 20 years younger.

The good part: I landed a number of solid takedowns and was able to consistently stuff and/or fight off their takedown attempts. The brown belt rounds were mostly a draw with us battling evenly. The purple belt won more than I did, but we had good exchanges and I kept it close.

The bad: Despite my being in great shape and having cardio for days, my 50 year old body just isn't as effective as a 30 year olds (both of whom are also in great shape) deep into the rounds. I went from offensive wrestling to transitional counter-wrestling to exhausted hand fighting, sprawling and stalling at the end. I was exhausted, drenched in sweat and had somebody's blood on me at the end.

Moral of the story: Take time to learn and train the takedown game, it's not only fun but important. Especially early into your training. Second, there's no such thing as 'too much cardio'.
