Glad that you're taking up BJJ and enjoying it! Re the cardio, just keep training and you'll start learning to move more efficiently, and also learn when explosive strength is needed (very seldom) and when it's not (most of the time). Rolling is the best way to get better BJJ cardio (and interval training 200m and 400m speed runs doesn't hurt).

You commented about being in survival mode....totally normal when starting out...and even something that continues well into the BJJ journey. Just train hard, tap early and tap often, and ask your instructors and upper belts for feedback after class especially if you're getting subbed with the same thing over and over.

Sweep, thanks for the feedback. My buddy that got me into it has said a lot of the same things. Definitely wasn't expecting to walk in and be good at it right away. Going into it, I knew there were going to be frustrations at first, so I'm definitely not discouraged at all. Looking forward to the journey. Just need to get my body up to snuff!

Wondering if any beginners also have a problem with their elbows aching after practice. It hurts inside the elbows as then on the muscles directly above and below the elbows. The pain actually just goes away an hour or so after practice.

Edit: and it's not from arm bars or anything. I think it has to do with the gripping.

I've been training for a year and a half, and I still pretty much just do my best not to get submitted by anyone with more experience than me. It will likely be several weeks or months before you even feel like you did one thing right during a live roll. Just don't worry about it.

Sounds like muscle fatigue from what you describe. Question - do you find yourself really death gripping folks while training/rolling (to the extent that you lose grips due to fatigue, have to shake your hands out regularly, lose blood flow in the fingers, etc? Second question...are you working mostly on closed guard grips at this point in your training?

No. I don't think so - in re close guard grips.

Probably lactic acid building up from gripping too long and too hard. As you continue training, your hands/forearms will get better conditioned. Other thing you'll start picking up on is how to more effectively grip (what to grab, where and when) so your grips are more effective with less energy expended.

In addition to grips - your legs, hips and movement will help you control ur opponent so your hands don't have to do it all...helping you conserve grip strength for when it's really needed.

But in general, just keep training and watching/learning from the upper belts and you'll find ways to use energy and movement more effectively so you're using more technique and less brute strength (easier said than done I know). Hope that helps!

Bump for a question - I've had this happen twice now where the skin on the underside of my pinky toe splits where it joins to the rest of my foot. Bleeds a little and stings like a mofo, but heals up in a few days with Neosporin. It's like it's getting stretched too much on the mat or something when my toes are flexing. I've never had issues with dry/cracking skin before, so I don't think it's that. I'm wondering if any of y'all have experienced it, and if so, how did you mitigate it / prevent it from happening again?

What I wonder about is why some people get cauliflower ear and others don't.

Depends on how you roll. Used to use my head to put pressure into folks torso in passing, so with that added with some fabric softener lacking gis, pulling my head out of triangles (arm and leg), etc. my ears got a little raw. Luckily my wife drained for me a few times to help halt that mess.

I sprang for some ear guards. My wife said she will indulge my midlife crisis but not deformed ears.

Definitely not athletes foot. Been there, done that more than a few times over the years growing up playing sports in the southern heat.

The toes thing will gradually stretch itself out. Your bare feet and toes aren't just accustomed to pushing off while rolling. Pretty typical starting off (especially in the winter). The non scented moisturizer and socks is a good idea. Socks especially so you don't get that crap on the mats. My knuckles bleed the winter so I keep hand lotion in my bag.

Good suggestions above re the socks/moisturizer. But you will be made fun of (in good fun or course).

Recently, I've been wearing a golf glove and tape on my right hand to protect a broken finger, and I'm now being referred to as "Michael Jackson" or "Thriller" by my instructor and training partners.

With it being Veterans Day, wanted to share a BJJ related video about a veteran who trains BJJ in Webster, TX. Talks about his injuries while serving, and the role BJJ has played in his recovery/life. Also some great comments by Vinicius "Draculino" Magalhaes.

One of the nicest, toughest guys you'll find on the mats and an honor to train with him. Hope y'all enjoy it.

I trained at the Webster location from 2008 to 2016. When Draculino and Marcelo 'Uirapuru' Azevedo opened GB Pearland in 2016 I moved over there. Still get by Webster couple times to check-in and say hello.

Yeah, highly recommend checking out Webster if/when in the clear lake area. Probably best to call the office guys ahead of time to check the process (and see what classes are best). It's pretty crowded there sometimes.

Recommend you check out Stephan Kesting's Grapplearts website. Lots of DVD's and videos that are high quality.

If you're looking for a complete set, I highly recommend Brandon "Wolverine" Mullins' 'How to Defeat The Bigger/Stonger Opponent' (regardless of your size). One of the most complete sets I've ever seen all with very high quality instruction). There's samples on YouTube you can check out. Strong focus on fundamentals that work regardless of level.

Thanks for the quick replies. I'm a big fan of Chewy on YouTube and I sent my wife a link to the Mullins dvds, so hopefully those find their way into my stocking on Christmas morning

I'm starting at Gracie Barra tonight! I'm 37 and a weightlifter, so this is a 180 from what I've been doing since H.S.

Any suggestions from those who train bjj 3 days a week and also lift 4? I might change, but I love lifting heavy and don't want to give it up so want to incorporate the two together.

The entire Ryan Hall collection is amazing (its not just sets of moves...its the thought process and entries as well).
Caio Terra half guard is is good if you like half guard

Astro, those are some seriously old school DVD's and books you mention (and all really good). I've got many of the same ones and go back to them regularly, even if they are considered "old" by the new breed of grapplers. Have even been working the Caio Terra footlock into my game.

Curious what you think of the Danaher series, I've heard his stuff is fantastic but haven't wanted to pony up the $$$ yet.

Stretch, warm up, don't get discouraged. I'm 38 and I've been training for two years. I train 3-4 days a week and also lift and run, often on the same day. Just ease your body into it is my recommendation. I didn't roll and workout on the same day for a long while, then gradually started working it in.

I really cannot emphasize enough the need to warm up. I've got lingering upper back and neck pain caused by rolling cold early on.

Cool! I've heard that the GBWoodlands location is nice and have trained with several folks from there, but haven't actually been to the school yet. But I plan to make it up there at some point. That's a nice thing about schools with multiple locations/affiliates...you can train at their affiliates for free (generally, though it may differ from gym to gym). Nice if you're traveling (or just to get the occasional change of scenery training-wise).

I spend most of my time at GB Pearland, but occasionally drop by GBTX in Webster for no-gi and to roll at open mat as well.

The posters above have given great advice re fitness, lifting, etc. Let us know how it's going and if you have questions/insights to share!

I'm having a blast! I go Monday nights and then Tues/Thur mornings. This is the first time in my life the "drinking from a fire hose" analogy is appropriate. When I try to take what I've learned into rolling, I'm too slow and leave myself open long enough that I can't finish the move (expected).

What I'm really trying to focus on is slowing down, breathing, and not use my strength over form. I'm 5'10", 225lbs with a 280 bench, 345 dL, and 330 squat, and while the strength helps against the more experienced white belts, the other guys either let me tire myself out or then just use it against me. I am motivated because I feel once I start to understand what I'm doing, instead of flailing around, my strength will be a bonus.

I'm so happy I started and can't wait to see what the future holds!

Progressing slowly, but I find myself thinking what I should be doing. My execution isn't good, but at least when I'm rolling the stuff we have done comes to mind. Of course I'm slow to execute so they block my move before I'm done.

Still tons of fun shoulder pain and all!

I still suck at the same stuff I sucked at when I started two years ago. Namely, I cant get off the ****ing bottom. Just stick with it. Eventually someone new will come in and you'll toss him around like a ragdoll, and you'll be like, oh *****..this actually works.
