Started tackling some motor chores the last week or so, including the TSP cam install. I also decided to upgrade to a LS2 timing chain while I'm in there. It's on order so for now the timing cover is just temporarily on. Before cam and clean up.

I also spent some time degreasing and cleaning up. After:

My current dilemma is my paint scheme. My original plan was to paint block the aluminum color as previous pic of T-56 trans. The block looks good in the aluminum paint i think:

I also wanted to leave the heads bare aluminum for natural heat dissipation. So this is what that looks like.

Don't really like it....so I guess my choices are to paint heads same color, or pic another color for block....I tried a "cast metal" color on a test piece. It looked too green. Maybe a black?
Thoughts?

Black is a good color for blocks IMO

Can't find a color similar to the body?

I like the painted Al look. Covers up any blemishes from casting.

But I could see a body color for the heads.

One option (don't know if you know) is you can upload photos to Sherwin Williams website and "paint" (draw a box) a surface. Meant to be for rooms, but I guess you could do engines. Can enter in specific colors, IIRC.

Do this if you aren't good with PS or other programs (like this guy).

Well keep in mind that the composite intake is painted the body color, so that will be my "matching" engine piece. I've seen LS engines with the coil packs painted to match the intake, which looks cool, but if I ever have a coil go bad, then that seems inconvenient.

Here's a pic I found of an LS that looks to be painted the same aluminum color as mine.

I'd be tempted to go Chevy orange just as a little nod to the past, but I'm probably deep in the minority on that.

Definitely thought about that Goose. If I was going the carbed route, I think I would be leaning that way. This looks pretty awesome, IMO:

Since your intake manifold is already painted to match the body the orange wouldn't really look too hot mated up to it. I think the only way you could pull it off would be with chrome and/or black around it like the one you linked.

Leave the engine and the heads alone

paint the valve cover to match the car

machine off or polish the chevrolet badging to metal.

The rims above were and excellent choice, although I am partial to chrome

This project looks awesome, really coming to together nicely

Thanks for the comments. I think this weekend I will mock up the motor with heads and intake to see what it all looks like.

Those "Chevrolet" valve covers are $125/each....that ain't happenin. Plus I would have to come up with a coil relocation solution on top of that, which I'm not against, but maybe later.

I'd go natural alum heads/block with the painted manifold

I'm starting to think I'm having an OCD episode on this motor paint scheme. I kept thinking something didn't quite bring it all together. So, when I got bored with polishing tail light buckets:

So I mocked up the top end to see what paint looked like earlier last week:

Meh....not bad but I didn't like how the block, heads, valve covers, and coil packs and brackets just all looked the same.

I decided to try some of the left over body paint in my HF HVLP gun. I think I finally found a option I like:

Opinions please?

Hopefully this will be the last motor paint update and the next one will be the assembly.
Although I did put some clear on the coil packs and timing cover after I took these.
My LS2 timing chain is supposed to show up tomorrow, so planning on zipping this thing up ASAP.

Part of me wants to see the heads painted the same as the crankcase.

But the other part says that looks good as is.

Can't really put my vote to one area.

either way it will look amazing.

personally I think it looks awesome as is.

Those light shrouds look great.

Any interior work done yet?

Pics, Pics ,PICs

Hopefully only the bottom light shroud looks great....top was before, middle was after de-anodization.

No interior done yet...long way to go still....

My LS2 timing chain came in, got it installed straight forward..you can see it is a lot more stout.

Got the heads torqued down, pretty uneventful.

ARP calls for a 3 pass procedure, something like this:

The internet makes working on stuff a lot easier...here's my torque sequence diagram pulled up on the tablet.

Installed oil pan also, but not before I smoothed it down to remove casting imperfections and a few bumps and scrapes:

Nope, haven't touched anything on interior, except the dash bezel and glove box trim piece were painted.

When I get closer, I'm planning on just buying a whole interior kit, instead of piecing things together.

I mounted up Dirty Dingo Sliders last night...they are pretty sharp. Hopefully they will make motor clearance a bit easier.

My list of remaining driveline related items is as follows:

  • Clutch kit (Flywheel, pressure plate, clutch, etc.)

I have a factory master cylinder that should bolt up to firewall and will probably replace slave cylinder as precaution.

Anyone had any experience with Monster Clutches? I'm eyeballing a Stage 1 or 2.

  • fuel line from tank to motor with all fittings.
  • Headers (Decided to ditch my cast manifolds I picked up)
  • Plugs and plug wires
  • Oil Filter
  • Air intake ducting and filter(haven't researched this much)
  • Drive shaft and trans yoke.
  • Ultimately will need the whole car wiring harness to start this thing.

I'll also need a radiator and fan assembly. Oh, and a battery.

So yeah, interior is still WAY off.

Not much progress lately...I'm on a business trip until 28-AUG, so there wont be any until then either. I may try to get a clutch ordered in the mean time. I've all but decided to go with the Monster stage 2.

In other news, I visited the BMW museum today, so here is some foreign car eye-candy:
