Perfect color for that car.

Thanks for the affirmation!
I must admit, I was not 100% on my decision for the color when we matched the original. After seeing these pics though(haven't seen the car in person yet), I knew this was the right choice.

Hoping to get the car home in the next week or two, then the real work begins!

Ugh.....bad news.

Decided to use my strategy for ease and convenience, and have a trans shop look at the T-56 Transmission.

Overall he said it is in pretty good shape, but there are a few items that need attention.
So here is the hit list:

Input Shaft is scored due to bad pilot bearing and needs to be repaired/replaced. (apparently these are way hard to find and are back-ordered most everywhere) ~$200

1-2 Syncho Assembly $250
5-6 Syncho Assembly $175
3-4 Shift Fork $160

Also a general rebuild kit with synchronizers(these may be redundant, which would be cheaper?) $350

Lastly the labor would be a flat $350, which isn't too bad I suppose.

So all total, I'm looking at $1500 for repairing a transmission that "is in pretty good shape."

Hmmmm. I may talk some more with the shop and see if I could get away with just replacing input shaft for now.

This is what a T-56 in good shape looks like; while still needing $1500 worth of repair:

Where did you go? I had Wendells build my transmission, guy is a straight shooter.

I had a piece of my shift cable mess up so I called him and he told me how to do a temporary fix till I can replace the cable.

He is pricier than most but he won't do unneeded work.

Took it to Macks,on Cullen, which came recommended from a few people. I grabbed parts prices off the internet, and Macks told me to call him monday to compare to what he can find.
Maybe that price will come down some.

Wendel did some work for me on my old Camaro way back when. I liked him. Macks is convenient because its fairly close to work, even though its in Sunnyside. I should know more Monday.

I went by the body shop yesterday to discuss a few things with my paint guy. Specifically we were talking about the steering column.

Since the guy that did my sheet metal work decided to steal my floor shift steering column and M-20 4-speed (yes, the same guy who locked up my motor) , we decided to cut off the shifter from another column I had. Here is the result:

He will paint the column to match body.
The car looks great, and he still has to wet sand the clear coat. Parts still needing paint are the doors, entire front clip assembly and trunk lid. Also the inner fender wells. The hood needed lots of work, but they are very hard to find, so it's worth it. Here is what it looked like after I had it media blasted, notice the rust hole dings and deformed top left corner:

I started working on refinishing some exterior trim pieces last night. These are mostly anodized aluminum, so in order to refinish them, you need to strip off the anodized coating. I used drain cleaner, which contains lye:

Stay tuned for the results!

Do any of the aluminum pieces you're reworking have dings that you're fixing? If so, how are you doing it and how are you applying a new finish?

Yes Fife, some do need repair....there are lots of youtube videos of repairing both aluminum and stainless trim. I've watched a handful. I may pick up a cheap HF hammer and dolly set to see how that compares to what i found around the garage.

One thing I've realized is this trim is very expensive to replace. There is hardly a piece that isn't less than $100! If the resale is even half that, I'm sitting on a gold mine.

Not a whole lot of progress this past week, unless you count all the cool stuff I ordered.

Here is a quick rundown:

  • Dirty Dingo LS sliding motor mounts(I already had some generic LS adapter mounts, but I didn't like my firewall clearance.)
  • ARP Head bolts
  • Fel-Pro Gasket kit and rear main seal, which includes most of the other major gaskets. Slick Deals had a $50 off $125 purchase at Advance today, so I jumped on that.
  • All my transmission repair parts, and shipped off the input shaft for repair.
  • 2-Part epoxy that is recommended for repairing older cracked steering wheels

I did paint a few things this weekend, and mocked up my valve cover/coil pack combo: Opinions?

And lastly, here is a fender, which I think looks pretty sexy.

I've noticed just about every picture I have of the new paint looks different. This one looks almost looks gray. Excited to see it all put back together though...

I did spend some time on aluminum trim mentioned in my previous post, but I'm not quite ready for the after pic....still need to perfect my technique I think.

Little late, but I really like that color.

Looking good so far!

Yes I'm trying to keep a fairly extensive spreadsheet to keep up with costs. But these projects are NOT light on the wallet.

I recently made the observation that almost everything I look at or buy costs at least $100. Like in my previous post, the motor mounts were like $130, the gasket kit was about the same, I bought a 255 LPH Walbro fuel pump last night for $100.

So yeah it adds up fast.

In other news, I dropped by the paint shop yesterday to put up the steering wheel that I'll be restoring and took a few pics of the car. He expects to be finished next week, so it's about to be "go-time!"

Sorry, been super busy lately, finally able to take some decent pics of the car back from paint though. Picked up some trim pieces new in box off of Craigslist...

My favorite:

Overall I'm really happy with the paint. The alignment on the doors and fenders aren't quite perfect, but I'll be taking the fenders and hood off to but motor in anyway.

Got my transmission rebuilt also, so I can check that off the list. Still need a clutch though.

I'm leaning towards these....

Maybe be a bit too popular, but I still think they fit the era of car....

Maybe something in a 17" or 18" diameter.

hate to pick nits (everything else looks fantastic, so far!) but I don't like those rims for the car. The best would be the classic slotted-look mags with the spline looking center cap. (I'll look for a pic, since that's not a very good description.) Next best would be more straightforward Cragar SS type rims. Those are just too contemporary in their shape and finish, imo - especially in 17 or 18" size.

actually, I just re-looked at the title of the thread. you said resto-mod, not restoration, so the more "authentic" wheels aren't a big deal. just don't go with wrangler's and we're good!
