I know exactly one TSU law grad that is an excellent lawyer. He was #1 in his class and the whole thing was free for him.

That said, the laments about the Harris County Democratic party "purity" test is entirely true. Some of you may have noticed that several of the white male democrat district judges are now running for spots on the intermediate courts of appeal. Why? Because they're no longer able to pass the "purity" test and will be primaried by someone that can.

The laments about seeing getting onto the bench as a big pay raise for bottom-feeder lawyers, I certainly agree. We need to do one of two things with those jobs: either pay a hell of a lot more or a hell of a lot less. The salary for being a state district judge is just enough to attract C-student lawyers. But it is also a solid 30% less than what big firms are paying A-student lawyers on their first day of work. So I propose either making the job truly lucrative to entice A-list lawyers (i.e. base salary over $400k) or cutting pay to what state legislators make ($600/month plus some benefits) -- thus turning the job into more of an honorarium for senior lawyers to take at the end of their careers.
