Cities in Texas have problems that cannot be easily solved. A large number of the voters don't look at qualifications and experience. They look at gender, race, sexual orientation, etc. This is why we have so many idiots on the bench.

If the parents, friends, and relatives of the victims just started meeting them outside the jail when they got released, the judges might start keeping in custody for their own safety. Might be what it takes to get this practice stopped.

Shoot, knowing these judges and DA's - the parents/friends/whatever would be arrested on the spot and tossed in the clink with NO bail option while the actual killer walked free.

I no longer think these problems will be solved in my lifetime. And probably not my kids' lifetime. I now think the increased lawlessness is the beginning of a new normal for urban areas. Or at least for the next two or three decades. Between the "rebuilding of the criminal justice ecosystem", the denunciation of police, and large communities that care more about skin color over the security of their communities and the education of their children, the nucleus for solving these problems aren't there. Elected politicians and community leaders will come and go, but the communities that vote for them will still be there.

I think you are right. I instruct LE around the state. I tell the ones in the cities that if they want support move to small city/rural Texas. In these areas not only will citizens pull over and make sure the officer is safe during traffic stops, they will kick the hell out of people when on a jury.

I can't blame him. Would you want to be an LEO in Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin, etc? You're just one opioid addled traffic stop away from being crucified by your own superiors.

One change that would make everything better is strong, conservative District Attorneys. Argue against low bonds and make sure the press knows that the prosecutor did all the prosecutor could to get a high bond. That at least makes the judge look bad. So maybe the judge will draw an opponent.

Right now in all of our major cities--with San Antonio being somewhat of an exception--LE is more likely to get indicted than a street criminal. In 2 cities, Dallas and Austin, the DA has made it known to LE, especially DPS, that the DA office looks forward to prosecuting LE officers. Morale among LE in small city/rural Texas is still pretty good. In the cities it is awful. One exception is Fort Worth. Everything is still pretty good there.
