In a torrential downpour, my experience is that some people will slow down to a reasonable speed, others (typically brodozers) carry on driving 80. I don't want someone plowing into the back of me because I've chosen to slow down and they think they should continue going 80, so i'll throw the hazards on in that situation to make sure it's getting their attention. I guess I don't see how it's much different than if there's a car having mechanical problems and driving slow on a highway trying to make it home or an exit and they have their hazards on, I appreciate it as it identifies they are driving slow and a potential hazard. In my opinion a car driving on a highway at significantly reduced speeds presents a greater hazard than a car pulled over on the shoulder. While other drivers should expect you to be driving at reduced speeds during a downpour, experience and bros, show otherwise.
Get out of the left lane.

Completely agree that hazard lights should never be used when it's raining. Everyone already knows that it's raining, and everyone can see your taillights. What it tells me is, "I'm special and having a different experience than everyone else on the road and may take unexpected actions that could harm you."

Record high for today is 84 in 1911. And it says 84 in my truck right now.

This blows.

It's ok to run them if the rain is heavy enough it is hard to see anything. A true hazard type of situation. Drives me nuts seeing them when I can see perfectly fine for a hundred yards. I see your stupid car and your hazards are accomplishing nothing but irritating me.

Got home early from work and was going to take advantage of the weather and go on a motorcycle ride…. Battery was dead. Got it on the trickle charger now. I'll find a reason to leave work early tomorrow to ride. Hell, I may go home for lunch and take the bike back to work.

Enjoy the week because the high next Wednesday is in the 30s.

Nope. If you are driving then they should not be on.

If only things were that simple and they aren't. If we are all already driving slowly and I can no longer see the tail lights of the person in front of me, the hazards are going on without a doubt. Don't be stupid about it. Don't also say, "stop driving" it's not that easy, practical or safe.

So from drivers ed (which admittedly was when Carter was president), you use your flashers when moving ONLY if you are going 20 mph greater than or slower than the speed limit.

I've seen truckers use their flashers quite often in heavy rain out west (west Texas, New Mexico, Arizona specifically). Can't recall seeing it here often.

I honestly don't care when ppl flash their lights in the rain. To me it is sending a signal out that they don't know what they're doing so I steer clear of them.

Hazard lights are designed and should be used when your vehicle poses a hazard to other drivers. They are not supposed to be a warning system about other hazards one might encounter independent from your vehicle.

  • Driving especially slow with a large cargo load? Yes
  • Picked up a flat and trying to limp to the next service station? Yes
  • Parked on the side of the road or shoulder? Yes
  • Stopping downtown to pick someone up? Yes
  • Anytime your specific vehicle presents an obstruction or danger that is uncommon to the other vehicles in the area? Yes

Outside of that, I could see an argument to increase visibility in certain circumstances where vis is less than a couple of car lengths (i.e., those random West Texas sandstorms that pop up out of nowhere and you suddenly cant see a foot in front of your face, nor can you slam on the breaks and stop because a tanker is going to kill you, flash fog, whiteout, etc.).

Yeah. Born and raised in west Texas and the downbursts and other sudden heavy down pours could be brutal and were not uncommon. Talking visibility less than 50 feet suddenly in seconds. Hazards were common in those conditions when everyone is inching along. Tickles me to see all you big city folk all flustered about it. It's not a big deal, I promise.

I've seen some back and forth on possible winter precipitation in North Texas on Tuesday night.
It'll be cold enough, but the precipitation may or may not still be in the area.
