That's a potus snake. It's most defining characteristic is that it's not venomous and from Arkansas

The potus snake that everyone thought we were going to get was the Potus stupidiosis "fall"iensis.

Oh, so Potus stupidiosis falliensis criminalus.

It's a subspecies of Potus airplaniensis underageius femaleius.

He is from a Spanish speaking country and is a close relative to the moccasin... no more hints

Close. It's actually a tequila moccasin. Or as they say in Mexico, mocasin de tequila.

Guess that was too easy. Thought he was the coolest snake at the Houston Zoo when I was there...coolest behind a glass wall of course.

False news reporting about rattle snakes? Can one of the actual experts on this board weigh in?

From the Houston Comical today.

Quote:

The most important thing is to be aware of your surroundings, TPWD advises, especially since there are reports that the rattlesnakes aren't currently rattling to warn people from getting too close.

"They're not as rattling as they used to. I caught on the other day - messed with him, held him up - never did rattle - not once," Eddie Pits told CDFW. " And I think that's the hog problem. Hogs eat them and the rattlers are getting to where they're not rattling because that's what alerts the hogs."
What say you, OB people that actually know what you're talking about?

100% False. Campfire story that has swept across south Texas.... almost worse than black panthers

That is some annoying a-- editing. The TPWD person they interviewed didn't say a thing about not rattling. That was on Animal Control Eddie.

So I'm walking through my living room last night and feel like I'm being watched. Out of the corner of my eye I see a head looking inside at about thigh level. We have large outdoor patio windows and the sill sits about knee height. I head out to take a look and moving along the ledge is this guy (or girl, how can you tell?)......

Window Sill Lurker

We have frogs all over our windows, I assume he was coming to catch dinner. To say my wife is afraid of snakes is an understatement. I've got 2 small kids, trying to break the "kill it with fire" cycle, so we get outside, watch the snake for a bit (juvenile rat snake I believe, someone confirm?), my son wants to draw a picture of the snake, so we do that, and he keeps tabs on the snake while daddy and little girl go get a broom and trash can.

So while we are gone snake moves around a bit, little guy spot-lighting him, wife has shown up at this point and FREAKS. Anyhow, I get him into the plastic trashcan in the photo, we watch him move around a bit and talk about how he's not venomnous and helps eat frogs and rats and mice, and turn him out in the creekbed at the bottom of the yard. An exciting night at our house to say the least. I know, meh for you experts, but the kids loved it. And then my son proceeds to cut out his picture of his snake and chase his sister and mom around with it all night. Kept the cut-out on his pillow all night.

We've seen a ton of snake activity lately, dead garter snake out front last week. I thought they would be slowing down, but are they active right before winter, trying to build up reserves or something? Not sure if they try to feed a lot before bedding up for the winter? Some biology explanation would be helpful!
