Pretty funny, thanks. Now my identity is out to all the OB heathens.

And just to clarify I'm not from crappy Wharton County, I'm from Victoria County.

You should tie your shoes... they were a greater threat than that snake

My boss told a story at dinner the other night of being on service when a young man was bit by a gaboon viper after stealing 2 of them from the local zoo.

Turns out he hadn't even embellished.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/local/1983/04/29/boy-bitten-by-viper-is-released-from-hospital/f865740b-7c8a-4e7d-8296-24e262b9501a/

Apparently the national snake center (somewhere in Oklahoma at the time) didn't keep sufficient Gaboon Viper Anti-Venom in this country and they actually had to import it quickly from Africa. And the boy still lived!

From a friend's Facebook.

I would have chosen life...assuming it is a yellow bellied water snake...

Cottonmouth...and if you weren't looking pretty closely I could foresee stepping right on top of this one.
That picture shows to some extent how a cottonmouth can flatten itself out.

Thanks for posting the black mamba. It is a nice addition to the usual yellow belly water snakes and rat snakes. That is one large, scary snake!

Also, it appears that you somehow got more than two tires off the pavement

In hindsight, it was pretty stupid of me to get out to take the photo. It was probably just injured after being run over. If you zoom in on its mouth, you can see the black around its lips.

This little guy was not too happy with getting caught up in my power washing of my driveway. Water was pretty chilly. Gave him a nice little warm up in my spotlight I was working under. He got himself a one way trip to the flowerbed instead of the driveway crack next to the grass.

It's a turd snake. You can tell by the lines under the eyes.

In before PC crowd calls it a Texas Brown Snake.

Tomorrow we're driving from Lundazi to Buffalo Camp (a bush camp) in North Luangwa National Park. Dirt roads all the way. It's 92 miles and takes just under 6 hours, 4WD. I'll try to post if I see Dan.

Not a Texas Brown though, it's a rough earth snake

So question about temps. How cool does it have to get before snakes stop moving around, go in their holes, hybernate, etc?
OnlyForNow

below 40... but I'll also defer to Zooguy and 12f.

Even then, they can get out get in the direct sun and keep cruising.

Good luck on snakes hibernating in Texas.

With temps around Houston getting back up to the 80s for the next week.

Snakes will still be pretty active.
ZooGuy
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Most snakes will be active until day time temperatures are below about 55 or 60. That's just a general guideline.
Snakes will occasionally come out (especially in Texas) if there is a warm day, etc. in the winter.

Do you happen to know about alligators?

I've heard 67F (water temp) is the temp when they stop feeding and 55F is when they start hibernating or become dormant.
ZooGuy
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Our alligators generally were not active starting in Oct/Nov. I would assume those parameters are about correct.
