It's a Hognose.
Copperheads have such a distinctive and consistent pattern I'm continually surprised at how often other snakes are misidentified as copperheads.

In response to Shilo, that looks like a rat snake, yes.
Caught a beautiful Pygmy at Cherokee scout camp (Athens) in 2004. He was coiled at the base of some steps leading to/from the latrine. First day of Webelos camp, must have had 10-20 ten year olds step right over him. A couple of moms came up and asked if I knew how to tell if a snake was poisonous. One look at that triangle head with an almost impossibly thin neck and I didn't have to see his tail!
He was about 18-20" long and although trying to rattle, it was so high pitched you could barely hear it. Got a staff member and we got it into a box and kept it for TP&W (staff told me they had to turn in Pygmies due to rareity). Before iPhones - wish I had gotten a pic.
Only poisonous one I ever saw as scout leader at 16 summer camps in N and NE Texas.

Eh, you've never seen a poisonous one. Now, on the other hand, you've probably seen some venomous ones.
They have a pretty awesome poisonous snake at the Wichita Zoo. I think it's from Southern Asia though, so I doubt anyone has seen it in the wild.

Would Pigmy's be in northern Grimes County? I saw a small snake with markings similar to a Pigmy several months ago near my compost pile. Unfortunately I did not have a camera at the time.

Good point - my mistake.
OTOH, pointing out mistakes like this on an (anonymous) public board might be considered poisonous behavior.

They are several areas around Gus Engeling WMA (specifically the bogs), and Camp Cherokee (apparently Trevor Reece Jones now) that pgymies are actually pretty common.
