They are great snakes. I bought a standard at that pet shop off Harvey when I was I school. Had him my entire tenure.

agingcowboy...Depending on where you are located, I know some folks that enjoy re locating venomous snakes as a hobby. And they are license/certified to relocate hots.

12f Mane, My wife grew up with reptiles. I married into it and have learned a lot about bp and venomous snakes. Favorite is the gaboon viper.

At least that's how I was taught. I have heard other variations

I heard it as " things that sliver, burn with extreme prejudice".

So a "Facebook friend" is apparently "friends" with Sid Miller, Texas Ag Commissioner.

Spring time is around the corner. Mama rattlers will be emerging with newly hatched young. They seek warm sunshine to lay in and nurse their young. Watch your dogs and children. They become aggressive and will chase you.

These weren't taken this year but wanted to contribute

I almost set my tackle box down on this last one! The timber rattler was really cool. That was taken up in upstate PA a couple years back. We're back up there again in early summer so may see a few more.

I had to look it up but my guess is blotched water snake. And I'm not all that confident it that guess.

I don't have a problem with any snake until it touches water. Once it touches water, game over. That **** ain't natural.

Great stuff. That black timber is sweet!

Top snake is a northern watersnake.

Are those present in Texas? That one stumped me and I'm pretty good on most Texas snakes.

Mostly a northeast and Midwest species. Some maps have a small area coming south of the Red River, but most show them north of the Red River.

Correct. There are a few (2 maybe?) records of them from extreme north Texas from a long time ago. And also, interestingly enough, a likely introduced but persisting population in White Rock Creek in Dallas, which is where this one is from:

Had some field work in Bolivar Monday and found a Gulf salt marsh snake, the only US snake adapted to chiefly brackish water. Always cool to snake a snake among fiddler crabs and oysters.

Thanks, the White Rock comment explains an odd photo I got last year.

A twofer under a board outside of Houston.

I'm surprised the OB isn't seeing and posting more snakes.

It's hard to take a picture when you're running full speed in the opposite direction... Or when you're holding a flamethrower.

First snake I've seen this year in NE Kansas. Weird Spring with lots of very warm, dry weather and then a short lived blizzard this past Sunday.

Anywhoo, this is the first snake I've seen this Spring and sadly he was found in the road. Great Plains Rat snake, yes?

Not knowing the difference between a toad and a frog should weed out a few city/suburb boys here.

I made my wife (fiance at the time) a short power point about the differences between a frog and a toad when we got our first dog (Weim with ACL tear ). She still tells people about it like it's something I should feel embarrassed about. She at least knows the difference now.

That's a prairie king snake, which looks very similar.

Here's a few more snakes from this spring.

Schott's whipsnake from outside of Victoria

Pair of copperheads found nearby under a stack of roofing tin

And a crayfish-eating specialist from Beasely, a Graham's crayfish snake

Have to love the diversity in the great state of Texas

Awesome pictures!

Do you go out on public land or by work and/or hobby have access to different properties?
12f Mane
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
Thanks! I go to a mix of places, depending on what I want to see and how it can be observed. Public land is pretty limited here, as we know. Cruising back roads is a good method for some species, especially when there isn't much public land in good habitat but a road bisects.

I do have occasional field work for my job, but the majority of what I find is on my own time.

That's awesome! keep sharing what you find. Snakes are outdoors and a live snake picture is a nice change of pace.

I wondered that when I saw your pic on page 1. What would be the distinguishing characteristics between the two?

They can be tough a the colors and patterns are very similar. One thing you can look at is the "arrow" on the top of the head. In prairie kings it is almost always pointing to the body of the snake, while in GPR it generally points to the nose.

That's a great way to look at it. For me, it's always been "the head just doesn't look right" ie less noticable jaws. Your way makes much more sense.

A few good ones from the Big Thicket today:

Tan Racer

Pretty speckled kingsnake

And a coachwhip
