First, I'm gonna keep the platform I've got and have something welded to it. Not get a whole new one.

Do you have pics of the rear deck?

Just dive in. You will have some frustrations getting started but that all just makes the first catch so much rewarding.
You pretty much nailed it. My dad says it's frustrating to learn like playing golf, and if you've seen my golf game you'd understand.

But seriously, I lived out of state for 5 years (TN/AZ) and didn't have the opportunity. Since I've been back I've been having a lot of fun just getting back down to the coast often again and putting numbers on the boat.

I know I'm going to make the natural progression to fly fishing soon enough, and by that time I should hopefully have an excellent teacher who's already gone through the difficult learning curve.

I realize fly-fishing is light years more challenging and thus exponentially more rewarding and fulfilling when you do hook up, even though you're usually catching fewer fish. Challenge/reward dynamic similar to rifle hunting vs. bow hunting I guess.

It isn't that bad. Just a few quirks to figure out. I got all the equipment and then put it off for a bit because I was scared. I wish I hadn't because most of what I was worried about wasn't a big deal.

OK, here's where I'd go with things.

1) leave the back bench in place and run with a portable fuel tank in that well
2) build rear deck that comes forward another foot or two but don't put a floor underneath it.
3) put a small platform on one side or the other for the battery- it won't have to be big because you'll just need it to crank the motor and run the bilge pump, which you'll definitely want
4) use battery powered, removable nav lights like these: http://www.fisheriessupply.com/innovative-lighting-led-battery-operated-navigation-lights
5) put down a deck in the cockpit which allows everything to drain to the well under the rear bench
6) get a grab bar/cooler base and screw that into the cockpit deck for seating and place to hold onto when running
7) poling platform screwed into the rear deck
8) rig up some kind of rod holders attached to the gunnels

I like this pattern bkclark tied up (pics by cp). It's simple doesn't, require any crazy or expensive materials, and it catches fish. http://texags.com/forums/34/topics/2666913/9

The thread on mysterious bird call reminded me of something I intended to share on this thread.

I have no idea what it is that does it, but when I'm offshore, and I've ONLY noticed it offshore, as we gently roll in the seas there is something at the stern of my skiff that PERFECTLY matches the first note of a Bobwhite quail call. It'll happen every few minutes drifting or a following sea - BOB..... BOB....... and it is so perfect that you'd swear there was a quail onboard that only knows half his call.

I've started whistling the ....WHITE in response to have resolution.

Tunnel whistle?

Have any round tubes near the waterline like a stick it anchor slot?

It's the vent on your gas tank that's whistling

I don't know what it is.

Requires testing. Enroute now.

May be able to talk this one down into your budget. Not sure if it's the same boat you were looking at before.

Gotcha.

I have no experience with them. Just know that as a bass boat they have a great rep for their build quality.

Not sure if that's the same Osprey or not but I think it may be a tad long for my garage.

I actually was in communication with the guy with the Maverick and was 2nd in line to look at it. Buttttt, he sold it today.

It should fit a standard 20 ft garage with a folding hitch.

Would def need that. But giving 2.5' for the outboard, it would pretty much have to be 0" past the bow.

Lol centerpole, I've got a shed behind my garage wall and have thought about what my wife would think if I cut a hole through the garage to fit the outboard.

I text the Osprey guy, it's different and pretty badass looking. We'll see.

Our garage backs up to our master bedroom. I was looking at a 20 fter at one point and trying to figure out how I could modify the bedroom to fit the outboard. I decided that it'd be better for my marriage if I didn't go down that road.

This hewes is a little shorter so it should garage easier. It's not as skinny as the Maverick or BTs but I bet it'd be more comfortable on the deeper bays like Galveston.

How long were y'all stuck there?
Centerpole90

We weren't really 'stuck' there, we were exploring. We poled up a gut off the channel while the tide was rushing out. At the end of the gut where the water comes and goes out of the flats it got shallow but there is a sh*t ton of water in the bay so it was ankle deep. We dismounted to see if we could push over the hump and out into the flat behind it, but it was too shallow, the boat is obviously sitting on the bottom right there. After we took the picture we shoved back a few feet into deeper water, spun 180, and poled back out.

By contrast, this is the exact same place in June '15 when there was NO WATER in the bay. This is a panorama, so it's deceiving; left and right edges are about 270* from each other. The center of the pic is due west. Yesterday we poled up the gut nearest the center of the picture out toward the flat that is black bare ground in this picture. It's probably best we couldn't get out there, we didn't have any business out there and a few more inches of tide drop we'd probably still be there!

Yes, I had a B@. Great boat. It would've been better had I not put extraneous equipment on it ... like a power pole ( too much weight).

Very seaworthy, not the skinniest poling boat though.
All in all a great rig.

ps. I'm headed Elk hunting, back in a week.
