After Ocarina of Time, you should play Majora's Mask. That is one of the few true sequels to a Zelda game, and is actually my second favorite Zelda game behind BotW.

If you haven't played BOTW, that is your answer. That game is awesome!

If this is what he wants:

"Looking for something with a story line but doesn't involve a bunch of side quests and what not. Just something cool to play through"

Then BOTW is not the answer.

Yep. BOTW is a great game, but I have two big gripes with it:
- it feels empty. Took too much inspiration from the Xenoblade games in terms of expansive environments and klunky, ugly weaponry
- very little sense of progression. Break your weapons. No true dungeons where you gain key equipment items. I liked the tried and true Zelda formula. If it ain't broke, don't fix it

I'm in the minority because clearly BOTW sold incredibly well, but BOTW 2 is the Zelda game I've been the least excited about.

I second Majora's Mask. OoT is and forever will be timeless, but I'd argue MM tells a deeper story and the entire game's theme is reinforced and consistent. A wonderful, very dark yet whimsical, Zelda experience. It also has the best sidequesting of any Zelda game. Was way ahead of its time for 1999.

Hard agree. You aren't the only one. BotW was very underwhelming to me and can not come close to topping MM or ocarina. Same reasoning as you so won't repeat it all.

Agree. BOTW was fun and beautiful but the mechanics and empty world were letdowns.

Aye. I would peg BOTW as a good game and to be blunt and stereotype like an MF'er, I can see how it appeals to the masses.

My biggest gripe is that I allowed myself to be caught up in the hype but my personal expectations were not met. I know that is a me problem and I promise to everyone here, I am not ****ting on BOTW to be cool. Only time I have mentioned I have been disappointed was here on TA and I think this is the second time.

Story and open world were the highlights and I just cut my teeth on many others that did both of those much better over the years.

Still, a fun game but leaves me not expecting much from the sequel.

Yea, and I'll say that no other Zelda game other than BOTW gave me that true sense of exploration on a mass scale, but that feeling went away after the first 20 hours or so.

Still a great game, but really missed what made Zelda, Zelda between 1998 - 2017

The younger streamers these days say there's no comparison and they vastly prefer BOTW from what I've seen. And I get that view, especially when they weren't around to appreciate the the first jump to 3D exploration and storytelling.

Also, how did BOTW release 5 years ago already. Insane

I was 11 when Ocarina came out... and I believe BotW is the greatest game of all time. Your two arguments of it not being true to what made Zelda great, and the feeling of a first time 3d exploration game are 100% nostalgic and in no way challenge anyone's opinion that BotW is the better game.

Now, if you have an argument due to story, world building, mechanics, etc, then please make it.

Story - It was shallow and bland. Nothing unique or interesting.

World building - Nothing you do really matters. The Blood Moon is a lazy reset mechanic. Majoras mask was so much better for example for both of these.

Mechanics - The random encounters are done better by other rpgs and the weapon breaking was a poor job trying to incentivize "creative" fighting

BOTW is fun and beautiful but isn't in my top 3 Zelda games.

I'll never forget getting OoT for Christmas when I was a kid. I had been reading about the upcoming 3d Zelda in Nintendo Power for what felt like years, and my hype level was up to 11. A 3d Zelda game?! Mind. Blown. The early screen shots they would tease in that magazine blew my kid brain.

Christmas morning came and I got the game. I got to play it for about 30min then we had to leave and go to my grandparents for several days and celebrate the holidays with family. I just remember counting the seconds until we could get back home. It was torture haha.

OoT was pretty special for me. I played it countless times through and enjoyed every moment of it. I popped in my gold cartridge last month to show my 6yr old and found that the battery had ran out, and all my save files were gone. Kinda a bummer. Several weeks after that my N64 kicked the bucket; won't turn on anymore.

Not sure why, but Majora's Mask just didn't click with me. Something about the count down timer I guess? I don't know. I look back and it really irks me that I didn't play it more, and I honestly can't explain why I didn't stick with it. I didn't get a GameCub, and when I played Wind Waker at a friend's house several times it didn't click with me either. (I played Link's Awakening and A Link to the Past, loved those as a kid)

After MM and WW struck out with me, I just didn't bother playing Zelda games again until BotW. Reading this thread, I didn't realize how polarizing BotW was. It definitely breaks away from the traditional Zelda mold in so many ways, and the story is overall pretty weak. However, the gameplay mechanics/physics were so dang good.

I think BotW is a "must-play" game if you own a Switch and enjoy adventure games. Comparing it with other Zelda games isn't quite fair, it's almost apples and oranges. Nintendo went away from the standard Zelda formula and I think that's not really a bad thing to try new stuff. Hopefully, they learn from it and we get a great BotW 2.

BOTW is the only game my entire family plays. Even my wife plays it. We are all eagerly waiting on BOTW2. If it can match how good BOTW is, we will all be thrilled.

My son (who just turned 5) is going through the game again on Master Mode for the second time right now.

Man your son is a genius! I'm nearly 50 and I still have trouble with some parts of the game. Impressive1

Been hooked on BOTW for a few months now, such a great game. I don't enjoy that the different weapons break after a certain amount of use. I would gladly trade the number of weapon slots for improved durability. Some of the shrines are super easy, some are very tricky to figure out, I've definitely had to get hints online for the tricky ones. Right now I've freed all the divine beasts but I'm just wondering around trying to find stuff that I missed and completing side quests before heading to the castle. I found the glowing horse/elk thing the other day but didn't have enough stamina to tame it, I need to have some stamina potions at the ready next time.

Goldeneye to N64 Online, RE 2, 3, Village cloud versions, and Zelda title were my biggest moments of the Direct.

Really the only thing I'm bummed out (mainly for others) is still no TP or WW HD ports to Switch. I know most people don't have a Wii U.

Metroid Prime Trilogy seems like a pie in the sky at this point. Have kind of given up hope of that.

Wind Walker was released for both the GameCube and the Wii at the same time. I got the GameCube version and still have it to this day. Nintendo hardware is so solid. My GameCube still works great.

Divinity 2: Original Sin has been a fun game so far. Obvious it was meant for PC, but they did a good job porting it over to Switch.

Wind Waker is one of those games I haven't played since it first came out. Would really like a Switch port, so I could play it again. That an a Majora's Mask port.

The mechanics took me a bit to figure out, but I'm enjoying it now. Definitely a lot of different styles you can play and kind of goes against the traditional party of "this is your healer, this is your mage" etc.
