what root method are you tryin to use?

Any easy OS X root options yet?

Reb. Have you messing King #6 or #8 yet? I just flashed 7 to give it a try after using 4 for the last week.

im on BFS #6 right now. im not sure which one i like best, they are all pretty damn good

#7 has been great for me. I overclock to 1.22 and still have good battery life.

Anyone rooted froyo with a mac yet?

ok, here's my scenario

I have 2.2 on my evo. I am heading to a cabin for the labor day holiday, which is great, except that I also have a fantasy football draft. As far as I know, I will not have access to the internet via traditional methods. Consequently, I would like to be able to use my evo as an access point for my laptop so I can bask in all that fantasy football goodness from the banks of the Comal River. I don't have any use for tethering other than this weekend, so I really don't want to pay $30 to sprint for it. My understanding is that the phone has the capability to tether built in, only that it is blocked by sprint. I also understand that I can access this feature by "rooting". I have seen detailed instructions for rooting a 2.2 evo. Generally, this is where I lose understanding of the process.

Given the above, if anyone can answer these questions, I would be very grateful.

1) After I follow the instructions to root my 2.2 evo, what else is required to access the tethering feature?

2) Is there a consensus on which "rom" to load after you root the phone?

3) What the eff is a kernal?

in my experience, you only have to pay the $30 fee to use your phone as a mobile hotspot.

Take the usb cord from your charger and plug your phone into your laptop.

when asked, select USB tethering instead of charge only.

Im not rooted and I have done this with no additional charge. Works pretty well actually

Once you root, install Fresh ROM. This comes with wireless tether. I finally tested mine yesterday and it works.

I have no idea what a kernel is exactly, but Kingkernel #7 has my phone running much faster, and battery life is much improved.

you need htc sync installed on your computer to use the wired tethering which is free

a kernel is a the real heart of a computer. it is what interfaces the hardware and software between each other, so its essentially for it to be small and powerful...you see kernels usually under 5 megs for this reason. This is why you have kernels that can break the FPS cap or affect 4g WiMax. ROMs are the O/S which is the software that interfaces with the other software (apps, etc) and tend to be 170+ megs on the other hand (at least for EVO)

i've noticed my phone has bogged down quit a bit as of late. Maybe an app purge and a root/rom/kernal is in order...

That will do the trick. I also find that if mine starts to get sluggish, just turning it off and back on helps.

MW did you ever get rooted? I remember you saying you got the 2.2 OTA update.

Have not been brave enough, as my phone is my professional lifeblood.

I may try it at lunch today, though.

Just rooted 2.2 this weekend but I'm still running the stock ROM.

Still trying to figure out what ROM I want to run and also how to flash the phone with it.

Couple of hours but I was very deliberate to make sure I didn't screw up anything.

Real Talk, did you flash a Recovery? That is how you will flash new ROMs/Kernels.

I'm a newbie at this. Have been reading a bit here and there at the xda forums.

You've done all of the hard stuff. Now all you need to do is back-up all your data/contacts/apps (I used MyBackup Pro, very easy to use), download a ROM and transfer it to your sdcard, and then boot into recovery by turning off phone and then turning on by holding power+vol down, select recovery, then flash zip from sdcard, and select the ROM file.

looks like I need to steal a PC to root or reinstall bootcamp. Damn.

make a nandroid backup

so i'm trying to get the latest "fresh" whatever, and i have no idea what i'm doing. what is a "data wipe"? what is a "flash" this and that?

god, i'm such a friggin newb at this shi...

ok. i have booted into recovery and then nandroid, and then "backup"

i assume this is getting nandroid?

Well Folks, I'm going for the root. Wish me luck. Hopefully, I'll come out the other end with Fresh 3.1

i've got 3.1 up and running now, having come from a stock 2.2 machine.

now i'mjust trying to figure out the "kernals"

MW so after you root, you flash Fresh right? Not the Amon recovery thing right? That sorta confused me, a total rooting n00b.

here is what i learned

1) once you get the thing rooted, you have to install a "recovery" method. you have a choice between "clockworkmod" and "Amon_Ra". I chose Clockwork, but Amon_Ra is all that works with Fresh. I am consequently changing my recovery method in a second.

2) Then follow the instructions to get back to a fully rooted/stock 2.2. This is the end of the instructions on the XDA website.

3) Once you are done with the instructions, go to the XDA website and d/l the new fresh rom, as well as the new radio roms.

4) Put the phone in boatloader mode, then into recovery, then choose "nandroid" and then create backup. This is your safety net, or so it seems.

5) once you have created a nandroid backup, you need to select the option for "wipe phone/factory reset" which does exactly that. your operating system won't change, but all your data will be gone.

6) after you have wiped the phone, chose the "flash rom" option and select the "fresh" zip. then reboot. It took a solid 2 minutes for my phone to work through it, but I fought the urge to pull the battery and was rewarded.

7) once you are up and running, go back to boatloader>recovery>flash rom> then chose the radio update. then reboot.

8) redo item 7, but with selecting the wimax radio update.

then you should be up and running with the latest Fresh

Okay! I've rooted 2.1. Now I'm onto the AmanRa part

Yeah that damn penguin is really irking me. I'll let him keep getting excited about his fresh crap, but I sure won't be happy about it.
