Now that it's out, let's get this party started. What accessories did you get? From where? How's the battery life? Have you had the SD card issues some are reporting? How's the 4G coverage? etc. etc...

***Optional tweaks to potentially increase battery life***

1) Do CDMA fix listed in this thread.
quote:
First things first, go into Settings> About Phone> Battery> Battery Use> Cell Standby. Assuming your phone has been on, or off the charger for ~10 minutes, it should show Time Without Signal at around 50%.

Next thing, press HOME, and bring up the dialer. Dial *#*#4636#*#* (Do not press "Call". After a second, it should bring up the "Testing" menu.

Go into Phone Information, press MENU, and tap "select radio band." You should experience a Force Close, don't panic, this was supposed to happen. Scrolling down shows that the preferred network type is GSM auto (prl).

What this means is that even though you are connected to a CDMA network, your phone is trying to find a GSM network, preventing the radio from sleeping, and causing excessive battery drain.

Remedy this by tapping GSM auto (prl), and changing it to CDMA auto (prl).

Now your done, your TWS should drop dramatically, and you should experience much better battery life!

Note: You need to do this every time you reboot.

2) Remove Friendstream and People widgets from your 7 screens
3) Up the time (every 4 hrs) that Facebook, twitter, mail, etc...fetches data
4) Use 4G only when needed
5) Use WiFi when available
6) turn off always on mobile network (optional)
7) use Facebook widget from Facebook and not the HTC one.

FYI, if you haven't ordered one yet, this seems to be the best deal by far:

quote:
For contract renewals, phone is only $189.99 - $50 Bing CB (search for Wirefly on www.bing.com/cashback/) = $139.99 after Bing CB

$18 activation fee($36 for new sprint customers(call sprint and SD), $10/mo. additional data add-on required even if you have Simply Everything Plan.

No tax in many states, instant purchase for $189.99 plus the $50 easy Bing CB makes this an awesome deal.

NOTE: Primary Line Upgrade Required

Use code WIREFLYBLUE11 for free bluetooth headset "It will not affect Bing Cashback. Just make sure you start at Bing.com and complete your order in the same session"

BING CASHBACK WILL SHOW UP WITHIN 48 HOURS OF SHIPPING

IF BCB IS DONE CORRECTLY YOU GET $50 PER PHONE UP TO 5 PHONES FOR A MAX OF $250 BCB. There is a hat's a display issue that will not show the BCB for additional phones.

Free bluetooth too!

I havne't tried out 4g, but I'm just going to get the silicone case for the phone and leave it at that. I don't want/need the screen protectors. I'm not having any of the SD card issues, but I did get a FW update when I first turned on my phone so I don't know if that had a fix.

By the way, for existing family plan people who just want to upgrade the primary line using Wirefly and get the bing discount:
quote:
If you don't mind the added hassle, then there is a better way to go about this and still have it be an online order for Microsoft's [Bing cashback] purposes. Order the add-a-line plan, i.e., for non-primary line. First, choose your phone. Click RENEW/UPGRADE MY CONTRACT. Then click SEE ALL PLANS and choose the Family Plan Add-on Line Upgrade. This is not an additional line of service. After you add to cart, you'll be asked for the phone number and Sprint PIN for the line you are upgrading.. When we run it through Sprint Friday morning, it will come back as the primary line, and our Credit & Activations team will call you immediately to explain, and to select the appropriate plan . When you order, make sure you use a daytime phone number where you can be reached.

Just ran across this on phandroid...
quote:

Hacker Matt Mastracci (posting on his blog Grack.com) is one of the developers responsible for getting root to the new HTC EVO 4G owners today, but with this gift he gives everyone a very clear warning: the HTC EVO 4G that you’ll be getting out of the box is one of the most vulnerable Android phones to date.

He cites the fact that he was able to root the phone so easily is not a good thing, but a problem. Consumers won’t know just how much access third-party apps have to their phones through exploits and a malicious app could do some nasty things with their data. Being the responsible developer that we appreciate him for being, he’s putting it out there ahead of time to make sure everyone (root or otherwise) who owns the phone knows what they’re getting into.

Another reason is he actually wants to work with Sprint, HTC, and Google to get this patched up before someone comes along and spoils the party. He’ll be offering his root method for one week from today, but after that period he will be releasing the details regarding how he cracked the device with hopes to open Sprint and HTC’s eyes (this is a Sense-only problem) and get a more secure ROM out there as soon as possible. It’s comforting to know that Google and Sprint are already trying to get this fixed up, so if you want to root your phone, make sure you do it soon as they could patch these holes up in no time.

To root or not to root...

I like the idea of being able to put Froyo on there as it seems to clear any battery life problems according to most sources, but apparently there are still a ton of code hangups since this phone hasn't been out long.

Just picked mine up at the Sprint store and I find it pretty awesome. Keyboard works great. Not going to root until I know there is a stable Rom for it.
reb,

There was already an OTA update that got pushed out that fixed an sd card issue and also broke the root that was found on xda. So no root anymore, for now, I believe.

No 4G in B/CS unfortunately, so I can't put it through its paces there. But this thing is so fast. Apps install so quick, open like lightning, scrolls like butter, it's charging up next to my Hero which now looks like a relic.

Picked it up this morning at 6:00 at RS and have just now finished configuring everything. I love it. The 4g is super speedy

Uncheck HTC updates in settings and don't accept any OTA updates if you want to ensure rootability. It isn't automatic, you have a choice.

Have mine in hand. Still waiting for the wife's t-mo line to port over.

The Sprint activation system was getting hammered and every computer at my Sprint store was getting error messages.

Can't wait for the port and swap to finish!

I got one at Sam's Club this morning, and the lady had to call in for activation as the website kept timing-out.

I posted this on the "Taking for a spin..." thread ...

Any of you guys who are going to be ordering cables and accessories online... I am willing to trade a brand new bluetooth headset for some combination of a car charger, screen protectors, car mount, mini-HDMI cables...

PM me or post on this thread.

For those of you that have been playing around with it since this morning, how's the battery holding up?

What now seems like ages ago, August of 2009, I thought the Hero was quite possibly the most advanced phone available. Here we stand, less than a year later and it's been lapped at least 3 times over by Droid/Nexus/Evo. I'd save that puppy forever just to look back on, lol.

I opted out of the OTA this morning and reformatted my SD card first thing. So I hope I don't get the memory card crapper...

I am going to get root this weekend (if family allows for time)

It is not fair to pass judgement yet on battery life because I have been pounding this thing like I was a nymph on viagra in a ho-house!

Battery appears not to charge at all if the phone isn't asleep while USB is plugged into a PC.

Strange. The PSPGo is strange that way as well. It will only charge when in "USB Mode" while plugged in.

atm: if you do get a chance to root this weekend, please post the results as soon as you can. I'd be very curious to know the outcome.
reb,

im going to test plugging it straight into a wall outlet, because from what i understand that delivers a faster charge. I never did it with my hero because it would always charge up while not asleep and USB->PC

Anyone have any recommendations on screen protectors? Seidio? Zagg? Does it matter? I've never bought one before so I don't know what to look for.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Alrighty, I have my first question as an Android-newby.

I've been using Windows Mobile for the 4 years prior and am a heavy email reader, occasional sender. My main email account is a POP account on cox.net. My past setups allowed me to download messages from the server to the phone, and I would leave them on the server so I could read/delete via webmail (at work or away from home) and eventually download all to my home PC. I could, however, delete an email from the phone and when I send/receive, it would delete the email on the server as well. Conversely, if I deleted an email via webmail, the next send/receive cycle would remove the message from my phone. This procedure was a perfect combo of functionality and battery life for me.

I setup the Evo's email client immediately, and it downloaded a bunch of email that I have on the server currently. However, there appears to be no way for it to sync after an initial download! I deleted a bunch of emails via webmail, and they stay on the phone which is quite annoying. There are far fewer settings available, and none of them seem to do what I want.

So, is there a way to get the same functionality I had before, or perhaps a different/better email app available?

TIA

jesus H, phone charge shot up from 67 to 86 from the time i last posted by being plugged into a wall.

ha wait a second, you didn't know the wall provides more power to a phone's battery than the USB port?

I think I have to give some credit to you rebelionel. and I think, mccinnis03, too. About a month ago, I had posted on here asking if I should get a hero or wait for the evo. You guys told me I should definitely wait, and I'm really glad that I did.

I'm sure I will have some questions soon. I'm a Mac guy, but android is really impressive.
