so GD stupid to put themselves in a situation where he gets away. at least we paid a RB and LB though

Byron Jones is now the highest paid corner in the league...in Miami.

I can't believe this organization decided to pay a RB and potential let a top tier WR & CB leave in a league that has been trending pass heavy for a while now.

Exactly. And Jerry made Zeke the highest paid RB in the league when Zeke had no leverage. No way Jones, Cooper, or Prescott are signing for less than record deals

You mean pay someone like Zeke who was pretty much our entire offense for 3 years, whilst having a quarterback who had gone a stretch of double digit games without passing over 200 yards? There's no way to anticipate that our offense would have completely flipped to a passing attack this past year. The truth is the cowboys still don't completely believe in Dak sure as hell not at over 35 a year. Nor do they think Jones who has almost no turnovers should get 20 million a year. Hindsight is 20/20 about Zeke and jaylon Smith.

jones is an outstanding CB. all pro his first year at the position. mentioning turnovers as a reason not to pay him is missing the entire forest. they screwed up. just like the rams screwed up paying gurley.

I'm torn on Jones, very good player but the biggest issue is the lack of talent at corner behind him. If they don't think Dak is the man then be aggressive and get Teddy or Keenum or somebody in town to compete. It's like the front office is paralyzed with fear so they don't move. Letting Cooper get away would be vomit inducing.

Doesn't take a rocket surgeon to see that paying a record contract a year early to the shortest lived and most fungible position in football wasn't a good play.

Which is pretty much what a lot of us said the day the contract was signed

This offseason is showing the potential fallout of that approach beyond just Zeke underplaying that contract

I don't think Zeke underplayed that contract at all.

I'm glad they didn't sign Jones to a deal like that.

Here is the thing. Dak, Jones and even Cooper are really good but all of them have question marks. I wouldn't feel great about making any one of them the highest paid at their position. Jones especially. Hes not a playmaker.

They are a core to a very mediocre team. I'm not on the ledge over this

Not not not paying top dollar for a CB with 2 career interceptions... one of which I'm pretty sure was an end of half desperation hail Mary.

Really not sure what y'all wanted. I was happy enough with him last year at last year's salary, but let miami pay him now.

CB very well might be our 1st pick this year... reload.

My thoughts on some other guys:

Cooper: Needs to be back, but Cowboys can't overpay. I like the fact that they haven't yet. Crazy WR talent in the draft this year... for this reason I don't see any team over paying for him, and if they do, we'll most likely grab one in 1st or 2and.

Cobb: Mike's boy, need to re-sign to a similar deal to last year's value.

Quinn: Wanted him back over Jones. 2 year deal should be do-able.

Finally! Now go get some depth and D help thru the draft and free agency.

We also restructured Zeke's and Collins contracts to free up more cap space so I expect another signing soon. I'm guessing Robert Quinn could be next.

Paying a RB a record salary for his second deal is never a good move financially. Saying you don't anticipate Zeke being less productive after all those carries is like saying you don't anticipate a 20 year old female gymnast to miss the next Olympic team in 4 years. They are both a lock to happen.

Wish we retained Cobb but for $9 mil a year...no thanks.

Very glad they got amari done, but geez did they need to have that level of difficulty? Seeing that Wash offered much more, but he wanted to be in Dallas.

I do think there will be a big signing for the defense soon.

Smart move in letting Cobb go for that contract. Believe we can get a guy like Duvernay in the 4th round as much cheaper and younger option. Hell they could even go big and get a speedster like Ruggs if he's their BPA at 17.

With all these WR in the draft I'm excited to see who we will replace Cobb with. KJ Hamler is the guy I want in the 2nd round and maybe we sign Dez to a 1 year prove it deal to fill out our WR depth.

Tyler Johnson (Minn) would be a great pick in this draft. He is being overlooked compared to other WR but would be perfect opposite Gallup and let Amari carve up DBs from the slot.

We should have around 25 M after the restructure of Collins and Zeke.

We can create cap space by:

-Signing Dak to a new contract
-Extending or releasing Tyrone crawford (8M)
-Trading Cam Fleming (4.5)
-Restructuring contracts of Tank, Frederick, both Smith's, and/or Martin.

I wonder how much Robert Quinn will cost, it could be anywhere from 12-17 M a year.
We will sign a DT or two and there is plenty of players out there.
We could also use a veteran DB or two so that we don't have to reach for one in the draft.

Maybe we trade for somebody on defense?

Hard to express how badly Stephen has handled this.
I think it's difficult to make this assessment without knowing what Dak is asking. The offer they reportedly put on the table is extremely fair
Take Dak's contract out of it. They let Amari and Jones walk. That is a huge failure, IMO.

Well you were half right anyway.

Plenty of talented WR in the draft. Get Raegor from TCU in the third or that tu kid. Both have incredible speed and can help the return game.
Trucker 96

Disagree with it if you wish, but the writing was on the wall a year ago that they were going to let Byron Jones walk. He's a good corner, but the metrics I've seen put him at 22nd in forced incompletions last year and 22nd in YPC allowed. I usually see him listed somewhere in the 15-20 range on corners across the league and it's not just based on the dearth of INTs.

Good for Cobb and Dallas... who the hell even knows what Houston is doing!? Cole got more than we could afford last year so we went out and got similar production for much cheaper. We will probably do the same this year with a rookie.

I'm not up to speed on WR contracts... did we do OK in the Cooper deal? Sounds like he's taking less to play here so it can't be too bad I guess.

Not mad about letting Jones walk for that amount of money. He was phenomenal last year, but he wasn't near as good this year. And the historic lack of interceptions is a red flag, though I don't know if that was a scheme issue. Our entire defense was abysmal at producing turnovers the whole time he was here.

I was just disappointed that out of that young core we were going to end up with only a LB with health issues and an overpaid RB, while losing our #1 WR, #1 CB and having drama with our franchise QB. The Cooper signing helps that a lot. Still like to see a Dak deal done before camp. I don't want him going into the season on the franchise tag and all the drama that comes with that

The Cooper deal is fine if he produces like he's capable of, but they need the dude to show up on the road this year. He was beat up last year, so hopefully a healthy Cooper plays to that deal

I'd like to see the real numbers, not the agent's leaked press release. But I agree that Cooper was pretty clearly banged up and not 100% the second half of last year. Not worried about him after an offseason to recover

Way too good of a WR draft to give Cobb that much
