He's pointing out how stupid the shutdown is...

Since it won't accomplish what many of y'all think it will...

So we should give the Dems what they want? They are not budging unless we do. You were against the shutdown before because you said the election was at stake. The election is no longer at stake. It seems you are really just against a shutdown.

I would leave it shut down until the Dems cry uncle.
They won't.

BUT the PEOPLE will make the GOP cry uncle.

Stop thinking tactical battles as start thinking strategically.

The people won't remember it. COVID was draconian tyranny by the left and it didn't make the top 50 as far as reasons people voted against Harris.

Giving the Dems what they want is not strategic and they will never agree to any spending cuts unless forced to.
I call bull*****

The IMMEDIATE response to the shutdown was BAD. And they DID remember it.

BTW, this bill is giving TRUMP what he wants...

Call whatever you want. They won't remember in two years. WGAS about the immediate reaction. Completely irrelevant!

Uh, as far as the Dems, they do control the Senate, You will have to give them what they want to get it through the Senate. You do understand that, right?! Even if the Freeedom Caucus all voted yes, the Dems are in control.

Trump would have been just fine with the original bill being passed, which would have given the Dems what they wanted. That's the only way to avoid a shutdown!

Your strategy is: avoid a shutdown! That's a strategy all right; a strategy of appeasement.

A better strategy is to pass a clean bill, pass it and dare the democratic senate to not pass it.

If it passes, great.

If the govt shuts down a couple weeks, so what. You get both chambers and can pass what you want.

Trump and the magas are being stupid on this.

The Senate Dems can filibuster it once the Rs take the Senate. It won't matter if the Rs have control. This stuff is not being passed via reconciliation. Discretionary spending is never subject to reconciliation from what I've seen.

This shows how uninformed so many of you are…as of this moment, there IS NO DEBT CEILING…

What he's trying to do is extend the current state of things so he can implement his agenda without being hamstrung by Congress…

Folks need to stop throwing out talking points and actually take the time to understand the current state of affairs…

Anyone claiming "Trump wants to increase the debt ceiling" clearly have zero clue about where the debt ceiling stands today…

Again…as of today, THERE ISN'T ONE…

Just because it is suspended doesn't mean it doesn't exist. It is still a thing. And increasing it to infinity via suspension IS increasing it.

Wrong…if it's suspended, it doesn't exist…

The suspension is set to expire in January…

If it expires, it is going to be damn near impossible for Trump to make good on many of his election promises…

So many of y'all just don't get it…

Congress, with both houses, can STILL pass a budget with cost slashing in March…nothing stops that…and they can slash the budget to offset what Trump needs to spend to fix things like the border and round-up/deport the illegals…

I'm as fiscally conservative as they come, and all else being equal, I'd be happy to let the government shutdown…absolutely…

But this fight isn't about a shutdown…it's about having the room to maneuver financially to implement his policies on day 1…

Oh, we're aware. It's an admission that there is absolutely no interest in addressing the real financial problems we're facing. We elected a liberal who wants to do liberal things, just a little bit different than the liberals who were in before. I hope you like your inflation, cause you're going to get to keep it.

I am right. It's a distinction without difference.

You're naive. The Dems are not going to agree to anything right now that doesn't give them what they want, including a bunch of non-spending legislation that was in that original omnibus. The Dems are also not going to agree to continue with the debt limit suspension without major concessions!

They don't have to filibuster right now. They simply wont bring it for a vote. But even after the Rs get full control in the Senate next year, the Dems will filibuster it at that point. To avoid a shutdown, you have to appease the Dems, now and in the future. Period!

It would at least be accurate…at present, there is nothing to increase as the current limit is "infinity"…

Yes, but unlike Democrats, Republicans almost never vote in lock-step. At least a few of them try to represent their constituents, which may be more liberal than we like. Collins, for example.

OK. If the goal is to get it to the Senate, then here is the plan...

Offset the spending increase with $110 billion of cuts elsewhere and drop the debt ceiling suspension request.

That's what it takes to get 100% R votes. It's not going to pass the Senate anyway. That gets it to the Senate.

And all of that is fine as long as you accept that it handcuffs the Trump agenda to fix the things (like immigration) that he was elected to fix…

You can't have it both ways…

Now, if you say you are only for fixing the border/immigration "as long as" it doesn't increase the debt, then that is a fair thing to say…that needs to be your stance…

It's ideological, and not realistic, but if that's your stance, then it is at least honest…

He needs the financial room to implement his agenda and then Congress needs to cut spending in March…

Will they? Look, it's fair to believe they won't…. I have zero issue with that stance…precedent supports that stance…

But then it stands to reason that they will never cut spending no matter what, and if that's the case, and you don't give Trump the fiscal room necessary to implement his agenda, then his campaign promises, and presidency in general, are already DOA…
