I agree with the life in prison sentence being worse for most people but for this guy I think it would be better for him to be executed. He would love nothing more to live out his days knowing that many of the families wanted him dead and that he beat them in court. He's just that type of person.

Even several years later I believe he wants to extend the suffering of his victims and surviving family members. I don't think he's apologetic or sorry for what he did.

The jury will start deliberating tomorrow on whether he should get life or death. He will be sentenced for each of the seventeen victims he killed, so he can receive seventeen death sentences, seventeen life sentences (without parole) or anywhere in between. He will be sentenced for his seventeen attempted murder convictions by the judge after the jury sentences him for his murder convictions, and he's facing up to a life sentence (without parole) on each of those convictions (minimum of twenty years for each victim that was shot and minimum of twenty-five years for each victim that was shot and seriously injured).

While that sentence should not be taken lightly (and is overused), what we have is an "endless appeals and carry out the sentence in 30 years" penalty. That's basically all it does to speed up executions.

If he is sentenced to death, he can choose between lethal injection or the electric chair. Only one inmate has chosen the electric chair since lethal injection was introduced in Florida in 2000. Lethal injection is the default method of execution if he doesn't choose.

Texas has lethal injection as the sole method for those of you who are wondering.

A tone deaf statement from one of his attorneys during closing arguments: McNeill said the death penalty is reserved for the worst of the worst.

"And the worst of the worst offenders are never people who are mentally ill and damaged through no fault of their own," McNeill said.

In order for him to get the death penalty on a charge, the jury has to unanimously find that at least one aggravating factor exists, that the aggravating factor or factors are sufficient to warrant the death penalty being on the table, that the aggravating factor or factors outweigh the mitigating factors and that he should be sentenced to death (they don't have to sentence him to death even if they agree with the first three things). If the jury isn't unanimous on any of those four steps for a charge, he will be sentenced to life without parole on that charge. He will most likely get the death penalty on at least one out of the seventeen death eligible charges. The Boston Marathon bomber had seventeen death eligible charges and he got six death sentences, so we'll see what Nikolas Cruz gets.

The issue isn't the number of appeals granted. The issue is how long it takes for each appeal to work its way through the appellate courts because appellate courts are very slow to hear and decide cases. I think that's an important distinction.

The jury started deliberating at 10:45 their time today. The time zone in Broward County is one hour ahead of the time zone in Texas, so they've been deliberating for more than an hour.

One of them involved having access to some transcripts. Did not hear the question as they were having mic issues in the courtroom.

Another question: "DSM V TR can we get a copy? Current CDC guidelines can we get a copy?" Neither are in evidence. Neither party objects to the judge denying the request.

He should get death, and it should be carried out in a 60 day time frame. The manner of death should be that he is turned loose in a room, and 3 executioners fire their weapons at him until he is dead.

Scherer listed seven "aggravating" factors a circumstance that increases the gravity of a crime that the jury must consider. Cruz's defense attorneys presented 41 "mitigating" factors anything in the defendant's background that would make the death penalty an inappropriate punishment.

Aggravating factors must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. There is no such threshold for mitigating factors.

This dude needs be tortured for all the world to see. slowly and painfully. He knew what he was doing and planned it out carefully.

Life in prison would only serve its purpose for criminals who wouldn't use drugs in the prison, and who wouldn't feel comfortable in its setting. Problem is many prisoners these days enjoy jail and have no problem staying there. Hence, death penalty should be punishment for most murders.
