I just realized that he wasnt even a Stark, which makes more sense to me given how he behaved in the show.

Book Helena flew all the time. One of the bigger misses of the show IMO. Should have more dragons and dragon riders.

Tbf the Starks in the books aren't particularly nice, they just have a reputation for upholding oaths. Ned was honorable personally.

Not after Jaehaerys was killed. She was pretty useless after that.

It's an expense issue. Dragons are apparently the most expensive part of production by a lot. This show already as a ton of incredibly well done dragons; more would require them to look more like CGI slop.

Watching the finale again and hearing the "Knighting Oath" that Ormund gave Daeron. "...will you protect the women and children..." as he placed children at the gates.

By the way. How long does it take to get a dragon ready for battle? Gwain, or whatever, was looking for Daeron a loooong time before finding him with his dragon.

Just finished the finale. I've enjoyed this show but for some reason find it harder to follow through 3 seasons than GoT. I also don't know how to read so haven't read the books.

It's better to view the show as Cliff notes to a specific time period, because that is exactly what it is.

There was no fleshed out source material to draw from so it is more soap opera-ish. The writing team had to hit some plot points but were free to ad lib to a specific formula for the late night premium channel adult drama.

As you point out, it's good but still missing some polish and depth.
