I bet it's a little of both. More time outside of work, but expanding the world of Lumon world as well.

Damn I loved this show.
What are Apple's subscriber numbers like compared to the other streamers? I feel like if Severance was on HBO, this thread would be 100 pages long.

Got a free 3 month trial with perfect timing to watch Ted Lasso. Decided to watch this as well on a plane ride and ended up binge watching it when I got back home.

What a series! Opening credits and piano hook are great too.

I feel like I'm getting whiplash on Mrs. Selvig. For the first half you're led to believe she is clearly the devil incarnate, but then little pieces slip out that make you think she might not be all that bad. Like giving Mark S. time in the wellness center and it seeming like she was hoping that they would recognize each other. Then when she was fired, you thought she was going to go anti-Lumen and anti-Kier. And her having obvious motherly instincts with the whole lactation consultant story-line. And not being evil enough to do something with the baby.

But then she lashes out and throws a mug at Mark S., screams constantly, breaks in and spies on Mark, and just other overall ****ty stuff.

My prediction for how Season 2 begins on the aftermath of the Innie Breakout:

-Dylan is fired and sent down the elevator giving the remaining innies a mystery.
-His replacement is a non-severed person who Lumen sends down as a spy
-Nothing really happens to Irv as Mrs Selvig can't confirm he was part of the breakout and the first few episodes are unraveling his mystery
-They explain away Helly's outburst at the Gala and her outie is bent on revenge
-Mark's sister asks who he meant was alive but he doesn't remember so the first episode or two is his innie trying to get a message out to let him know that his wife is alive.
-Mark is reintegrated near the end of Season 2 or somewhere in the middle after he finds out that his wife is alive.

The only thing I don't have at least an educated guess for is how they explain away Mrs Selvig to Mark's outie. Probably by just having that alterego just disappear?

And the cult aspect of Kier, what the hell is that about? To the point that Mrs Selvig has a shrine and literally worships the guy.

And the Waffles Wide Shut party for Dylan? And the goats? So many funny mysteries to unravel. Great storytelling and writing to create playful mysteries surrounded by this one big darker mystery. I mean who didn't laugh when Helly and Mark opened the door to find the goats?

Speaking of the goats, I remember when Helly is talking about her break room experience and mentions to Dylan about the noise she was hearing, and Dylan asks, "Oh the baby crying?" And Helly says no, some type of mumbling.

Was that baby crying comment a reference to the bleating goats? And Helly's comment about mumbling a reference to Mrs Selvig mumbling worship adorations to Kier?

The end of October 2022 saw a giant announcement of new talent joining the show, too.

Getting ready to enter the Lumon offices are Emmy nominee Gwendoline Christie (star of the recent Star Wars movie reboots, and a Game of Thrones fan favorite) Oscar and Emmy nominee Bob Balaban (a regular in such Wes Anderson movies as Moonrise Kingdom and The French Dispatch), Robby Benson (the Beast from Disney's animated Beauty and the Beast no, seriously!), Stefano Carannante (Mirabilia), John Noble (star of Fringe and the one who really grossly eats tomatoes in Lord of the Rings), lafur Darri lafsson (The Tourist), Alia Shawkat (Arrested Development and Search Party), and Merritt Wever (Godless).
. . .
"There's definitely going to be some expansion of the world," Erickson said in an interview on season 2 with Esquire. "Within Lumon, we're going to see more of the building, and we'll see more of the outside world, too.

"There's an overall plan for the show. I have an end point in mind, and I intentionally didn't plan it season by season, because I wanted it to be flexible enough that we could get there in two seasons or six seasons. I want to allow us to be surprised by where the show goes.
. . .
According to Production Weekly, and as confirmed by Stiller, filming of Severance season 2 began in October 2022 and will likely stretch out to May 2023 - a seven-month window. This was further confirmed in late October by a report by Variety Insights, confirming that filming has now begun on season 2 of Severance.

We just binged this show over the last week. Watched the finale tonight. Absolutely loved everything about this show. Didn't even know it existed two weeks ago.

A lot of questions I had have already been asked or answered in this thread. Except for the "data refinement". Any guesses as to what they're actually doing? Or maybe it doesn't DO anything and it's one big psychology experiment?

Beau Willimon was responsible for some of the best episodes of Andor, so this is ultimately good news, IMO...

For a show that's all about escaping toxic workplace drama, Severance, ironically, may be one of the messiest shows currently in production.

maybe they meant "appropriately" instead of ironically?

Was just thinking about Severance - it's been just over a year since we all got sucked into S1 - but it feels almost like a couple years. Gonna owe this a rewatch before S2 gets dropped

Watched season 1 over the past week, enjoyed it. This show, in addition to all the praise in this thread, is slyly funny.

It's only been a day for me! Just finished it up last night. Can't believe I missed this when it came out. Wife and I just started exploring Apple TV and came across this one after we finished Ted Lasso. I think I like this one just as much as Ted Lasso. Can't wait for Season 2!

I think Apple TV+ is the best buy in streaming channels. Everything we've watched has been compelling, well written, and most importantly, fun. Try "For All Mankind" while we wait for Severance S2.

I'll check it out. Not sure I could get my wife to try it. We normally watch shows together.

I watched the first couple of episodes of "Foundation" on a flight the other day and liked it, but again...the wife would probably be bored to death of the sci-fi stuff.

I do fly quite a bit, so I may just have to finish that over the next couple of years of flying. Usually, if I'm not watching with my wife, I'm watching sports.

My wife is not a sci-fi fan at all, but really likes For All Mankind. It's not nearly as sci-fi as you'd expect

My wife generally hates sci-fi, but she's enjoyed FAM. There's plenty of soap opera style drama and very strong female characters to balance out the male astronaut testosterone. The alternative history timeline gets increasingly interesting, too. I'd be surprised if your wife doesn't get hooked after the first few episodes.

I need to pick this back up. I made it about 1/2way through the season?

So slow and my wife bailed on after the 1st episode. Sounds like it is worth the burn to get back in the seat though.

I loved it from the very start. Slow doesn't bother me, though, as long as it's interesting.

No idea, seeing as production went somewhat off the rails, and took time to get sorted out, even before the strike. But now that it's delayed due to the strike, along with nearly every other show, who knows. Definitely not 2023. Maybe, like, summer 2024?

Shrinking is excellent. I thought the first episode started out a little rocky, but it only got better and better. Great recommendation.

Yes, Shrinking is great. With so many shows designed to have no likeable characters, it is nice to have one where almost every one is likeable. Even neighbor Liz overcame her initial perception once it was explained why she is how she is, and she owns up to it.

I'm in a drought for content, because I have no desire to watch The Idol and everything else is pretty much between seasons.

Not quite on the same level as Shrinking, but Platonic has been pretty good so far too.

Yeah, the first couple of episodes were really hard to watch, but the payoff was well worth it and the first couple make sense at the end. This was my favorite series to watch so far this year.

Emmy qualification ends on May 31 each year, so June for TV is a bit like the lull in January after Oscar qualification ends on December 31 for movies. Hence why so many great shows ended their runs/seasons a couple weeks back. There's still some good stuff on, though, and more right around the corner. Silo, in particular, is great/addictive so far and, as mentioned above, Platonic is pretty funny/enjoyable as well. Both of those are on Apple TV as well. Then, The Righteous Gemstones returns this Sunday, Secret Invasion starts on Wednesday, and The Bear is back on Thursday. So not a bad June, all things considered.

Finally got to this show and binged it over the weekend. Similar to what others mentioned, my wife also thought the show was really slow initially and almost gave up.

I was pretty much engaged from the first scene and loved the humor of the show. Yes, dylan was the obvious choice for "funniest" character, but I also just love some of the absurdist humor (if that's the right term?) and satire throughout the show. Like the contrast between the opening scene of the show, with helly seemingly in a horror movie and mark/the voice being the sinister/bad guy... versus minutes later getting the "behind the scenes" version with Mark simply being incompetent/first day jitters. Another example is milichik dancing around dylan just hours after dylan finds out he has a son, with milichik being completely unaware/ignorant of the mental toll finding out that information may have on a person.

I loved how many of the episodes had a small and somewhat meaningless detail that hinted at the big reveal towards the end of the episode. Two that come to mind are harmony asking Devon if mark had ever "seen his wife" since her death; the other being that the candle we see in the room during one of mark's sessions with gemma is the same candle that is in his basement.

I like the theory tctts brought up that gemma is actually dead and the gemma at lumon is a clone.

Lastly, all of the parallels to religion were really well done. One particular moment that stuck with me was one of the conversations between Burt and Irving where they are quoting lumon "scriptures" in regards to Irving falling asleep. Burt asks who cares and Irving responds that the handbook cares and quotes "no workplace shall be repurposed for slumber."

Bert responds with such a simple line. "I know the handbook, old man. I'm more of a first edition kind myself. The original word of Kier: and I shall whisper to ye dutiful through the ages. In your noblest thoughts and epiphanies shall by my voice. You are my mouth, and through ye, I will whisper on when I am 10 centuries demised."

Two things and then I'll stop my mind dump on you all.

First, it seems like a parallel to the holy spirit and, specifically, the ending to the gospel of John, where Jesus tells his disciples to follow the rules (obey and love) and the holy spirit will speak to you.

Second, this exchange just really stood out to me because it is so much of what's wrong with most modern day religions (Christianity being the most obvious parallel in the show). The text of lumon has multiplied in size from edition 1 to edition 11 and a lot has been added. I'm not trying to equate Kier Egan to Jesus... Only that there is something sad about the original message of both being so warped by centuries of bureaucracy and a hateful human heart that they don't even resemble the original message/"edition".

He had the picture of himself with Gemma in his hands, so they will know what he means.
I wonder how much they will parallel certain aspects of Lost. Is this the only Lumon building operating?
