Roma cleaning up with 10 nominations. And both actresses nominated, which is pretty awesome. I doubt Yalitza wins it but I had my fingers crossed for a nom for her.

How in the ****ing hell did "Won't You Be My Neighbor" not get a nomination?

As for Best Picture, let's be honest. We all know why Black Panther is there. It's not really deserving, and First Man was snubbed, IMO.

Neither had a shot in hell, but First Man is a FAR better movie.

- Cooper not getting a Director nod is probably the biggest snub

- Always drives me nuts how they expanded Best Picture to 10 slots yet never use them. Those two slots should be used for something. It would add two more films to people's radar and open people's eyes to some great films. I would have thrown First Man, Spiderverse, Beale Street, Mary Poppins, or Eighth Grade on there.

- Eighth Grade got nothing Was expected to but was hoping. I loved that movie.

- Seemed like there was momentum for a Cold War Best Picture nomination with it getting Cinematography and Best Director. Was kind of surprised it didn't get Best Picture as well with that momentum.

Oh wow, didn't even notice the Cooper snub. Kinda crazy. (Still, it is Cuaron's award to lose at this point.)

I've seen 5 of the 8 and I would give it to Roma in a landslide.

I've seen:

- Black Panther
- BlacKkKlansman
- Roma
- A Star Is Born
- Vice

How If Beale Street Could Talk didn't get a Cinematography nom, I'll never know. Could argue that it looked better than Roma.

Seen:
Black Panther
BlacKkKlansman
Bohemian Rhapsody
The Favourite
Roma
A Star Is Born
Vice

Not seen:
Green Book

My personal ranking:
1. Roma (My choice for BP)
2. Bohemian Rhapsody (Close second)
3. BlacKkKlansman
4. A Star Is Born
5. Vice
6. The Favourite
7. Black Panther

5-7, I didn't really like very much and wouldn't even put them on my top 10 of the year list.

And one more thing. Toni Collette's performance blew each and every single one of these out of the water.

Haven't seen The Wife or Can You Ever Forgive Me, but I'll definitely agree that she deserved the nom over Olivia Colman.

Say what you will about the movie itself, but I think Black Panther does deserve to be nominated for Score and Costume Design, so I'm glad it got those. Wakanda isn't Wakanda without them.

But my wife and I made a resolution to watch all of the nominees this year. So we've got a lot of movies to watch...

Eighth grade was much better than Vice. What does Vice have that gets a nod this season ?

Star power and an Oscar-worthy performance.

Eighth Grade is definitely more deserving.

(And I still think Rami deserves it over Bale.)

Speaking of which, Sam Rockwell over Chalamet is pretty ridiculous.

He was hardly even in Vice, and not doing much when he was there. Chalamet knocked it out of the park in Beautiful Boy.

Agree. I love Rockwell, but the dimwit with a southern accent? He already won for that.

Surprising because I thought that would be the one doc that could beat Free Solo.

Watching Free Solo win best doc is the only reason I'd watch this year.

I'd put BP's nomination for Production Design above both those, a category it absolutely deserves to win. The world design of Wakanda was incredible.

And I have no problem with it getting a Best Picture nom, it had massive cultural relevance and was a really good movie.

I'll give you the first one, but come on it was an incredibly mediocre movie. Really good movie is a stretch, best picture is outright ridiculous.

There were other movies that had "cultural relevance" that were better than Black Panther

And Into the Spider-Verse without question deserves Best Animated Picture and is the one award I really want to see happen.

Also, if you like animation (or movies in general) do yourself a favor and watch One Small Step. It's a nominee for Best Animated Short and made by a small team of former Disney animators, it's absolutely beautiful and a really powerful story about family and relationships. Watch it and bring tissues.

This.

Better blockbusters in 2018, off the top of my head:

Avengers: Infinity War
Mission: Impossible - Fallout
A Quiet Place

A large part of the relevance is the scale of BP though, which nothing else was close to. And I did think it was really good, but everyone is entitled to their opinion.

This clearly shows that the academy has alt-right bent.

The substandard movie that features a racially pure ethno state and is nothing but 2 hours of race baiting ending in a war between races in the sequel gets the nomination while the vastly better movie gets snubbed because there literally isn't enough flag waving.

Political virtue signaling trumps quality. They are pushing it hard to send a message, and it has nothing to do with quality.

Maybe so. Though it was 2018.

At the risk of moving my goalposts, if iron man and ragnarok didn't get nominated, a more mediocre black panther shouldn't be. It wasn't even the best MCU movie set in Wakanda this year. It seems transparent.

Again, it's not about quality with many of these.

Super hero films have always been avoided for best film nominations, even the all-time great ones that seemed deserving. Yet all of a sudden this one happens break through to make the cut?

There are other motives at play.
