No, I was as shocked as anyone to see seats left, but I managed to get four decent seats together online. I'm guessing Thursday and Friday are sold out, but Saturday somehow isn't completely sold out yet.

I got tickets for a 9:50 pm show Thursday night. Guess I'll be burning a sick day that Friday.

Makes sense, I'd think 90% of people are trying for Thursday or Friday at latest.

Well yeah. Otherwise you have to avoid the internet altogether for a couple of days.

Be careful because that place is in a pretty bad neighborhood from what I understand. I guy named Hedy Lamarr....oh wait, my mistake Hedley Lamarr was shot outside of the Grumman Chinese Theater over a box of Rasinets.

I'm definitely getting old because my first reaction to this statement was that it would be really easy to do.

Cinemark site is pretty terrible. It's not completely unusable, but every click requires at least 30+ seconds of thinking... feel like I'm back in the dial up days... *shudders*

Looking forward to the teased Iron Man/Cap/Thor vs Thanos fight.

Really, getting to see a more extended Thor vs Thanos in general should be awesome. That fight getting more or less skipped in the beginning of Infinity War was really one of the only things that bugged me about the movie.

The shock value of seeing Thor defeated already, followed by Hulk getting dominated in about 60 seconds, was a nice touch, I thought.

Let me say something unpopular: too many fight scenes in movies like this make them worse movies.

Once you reach a certain age (and I'm way past it) that is absolutely the truth unless the fights are short and really cool (Cap 2 in the elevator). I literally fell asleep during Starlord/Captain Ron punchfest 2000 in GOTG2

I don't feel so old anymore. I thought that fight was awesome especially with The Chain playing in the background again.

Fair enough. It did set the stage for us to realize just how powerful Thanos is/was.

I never thought we'd see this much footage, and I kind of wish we hadn't, but I still think it's some kind of ruse. Not on behalf of the filmmakers, but in that the remaining crew isn't *just* going to straight up fight Thanos again and that's big their plan. I think it's a big trick they're pulling on Thanos somehow. Notice that there are two different missions, one in their standard uniforms as depicted in this latest trailer and then another in their presumed sub-atomic suits in the pic below that. It seems the top pic comes first, judging by Black Widow's hair, but it's crazy to me that they'd potentially go face off against Thanos again first and THEN go back to Earth and go subatomic for whatever that mission might be. I'm so confused but so incredibly curious to see how this all plays out. Cannot wait...

Also, in that ship pic, Captain America isn't wearing his Endgame suit with the scale-mail. Maybe it's a search and rescue mission for Tony?

Kind of surprising, given that it was WAY harder to secure tickets for The Force Awakens opening weekend, at least here in LA, and that I'm still seeing empty seats for Endgame...

For sure. The last movie brought a lot of new fans because it was such an iconic pop culture moment, and they'll want to see the payoff quickly
TCTTS

I think it does. The Snap has become a pop culture phenomenon, and at least when it comes to my personal interest, I'm a lot more interested in seeing how this story ends - and how they "reverse" The Snap - than I was for the first part of what we knew going in was a two-parter.

i think yes.

i'm not sure how anybody who felt motivated to go see IW on opening weekend wouldn't also feel compelled to do so for Endgame. i think the fear of being spoiled is going to convince a bunch of others to go who might not otherwise be inclined to go opening weekend.

i think the biggest think working against it is the longer run time which should result in fewer showings. the obvious solution would be to have it on more screens at the theaters. while i know theaters don't get as much of the "take" on opening weekends, they'll still clean up on concessions.

This made me want to figure this out once and for all; if a three-hour movie *definitely* results in one less screening in the day or not. I assumed it would, but had always wondered if at a certain point (say, after a 2h 15m runtime or so) it even matters. So I compared it with a 2h 15m blockbuster, and included trailers and clean-up/seating times for both, and yeah, it's EXACTLY one less showing in the day, if considering a relatively normal day with showtimes starting at a relatively normal time...

2h 15m Movie...

10:00 AM + 15m trailers + 2h 15m movie + 30m clean-up/seating = 01:00 PM
01:00 PM + 15m trailers + 2h 15m movie + 30m clean-up/seating = 04:00 PM
04:00 PM + 15m trailers + 2h 15m movie + 30m clean-up/seating = 07:00 PM
07:00 PM + 15m trailers + 2h 15m movie + 30m clean-up/seating = 10:00 PM
10:00 PM + 15m trailers + 2h 15m movie + 30m clean-up/seating = 01:00 AM

...and you could even add another 15 minutes to each screening and the final showing would still start at 11 PM, which isn't unreasonable.

Compared to a 3h movie...

10:00 AM + 15m trailers + 3h movie + 30m clean-up/seating = 01:45 PM
01:45 PM + 15m trailers + 3h movie + 30m clean-up/seating = 05:30 PM
05:30 PM + 15m trailers + 3h movie + 30m clean-up/seating = 09:15 PM
09:15 PM + 15m trailers + 3h movie + 30m clean-up/seating = 01:00 AM

Even with 24-hour showings and additional theaters, I do now wonder if the runtime might be the one thing working against it breaking the record...

I can't remember which thread I posted it in, but at least one theater near me is starting showings at 730am on Saturday, so losing a showing might not be as impactful.

The question is more of with that one extra showing a day, would more people have just gone on the front end of the weekend leaving Sunday evening showings lighter.

With the one less showing, it just might push the same amount of people further into the weekend.

Still can theoretically beat IW on OW if Sunday evening's showings for the 3 hour movie stay steadier than a Sunday evening's showing for the 2hr 15min movie.

Either way, this thing is going to make a lotta dough.

Question: What times were the first showings for IW on opening weekend versus the first showings for Endgame?

True, but I'm assuming Infinity War and The Force Awakens did the same thing?

The runtime is basically the main reason I think it doesn't quite beat out IW. But it's definitely within the realm of possibility. If it does do it, I think it'll be by a few million at most.

The real interesting thing to me, is whether or not Ep IX will break whatever the new record is.

I literally never go to blockbuster movies on opening weekend and the fear of it being spoiled for me (my younger son, actually, who can't resist spoilers) has me leaning toward going as early as I can.

When someone like me is motivated to go opening weekend, I think that's a good indicator it's going to have a huge open.

Good points above about runtime being a limiting factor, however. I guess I should say i think it will be as big as it can be with that limitation.

I think Ep IX has an uphill battle before it (and I am not saying anything at all about the potential quality of the film). I think TLJ and Solo took some of the shine off the franchise in a lot of people's minds and there may be some reluctance on some people's parts to see this movie in theaters. Not a huge amount, but enough to keep the movie from reaching the box-office heights of the previous films and the Avengers movies.

I don't know. Maybe the trailers will be so good that everyone will be as excited for Ep IX as they were with TFA. Who knows?

Pretty sure it was just TLJ, because it seems like everyone that saw Solo really liked it. TLJ just killed the desire for people to go see another SW movie, especially so soon.

Yeah, I think opening weekend might be a tough battle for it to win.

However, I do think it has the advantage in the overall domestic gross category. I think the Star Wars name, plus the fact that it's the climax of the saga, is just too big.
