It will have been 9 years between Batman movies when this releases
Not to mention it's been a whole 5 months since we last saw the Waynes get murdered.

I'm sorry, I've never heard of this "Batman". What motivates him to what he does?

- Said no one, anywhere.

How about a 3 hour movie that takes place in real time as the Waynes get dressed, drive to the theater, watch the show, leave, and enter the alley before the shooting? I'd like more development on what route they took from Wayne manor and what kind of acoustics there were for their seats at the show.

All kidding aside, it's going to be interesting to see how WB/ Reeves "justifies" this iteration...

- With the Burton version, we had obviously never seen a modern Batman on screen before (and I consider the Schumacher versions extensions of this one).

- With the Nolan version, we had never seen how Batman became Batman. We got the ultimate, real-world origin story.

- With the Snyder version, we got the Batman who exists in the DC universe, among all the other superheroes.

Not that I or audiences in general need justification for the Reeves version - we'll all be there regardless, and I can't wait - I'm just curious what, if anything, will separate this Batman in a notable, bigger context way that each of the previous iterations have. For all the Batmen we've had prior, this feels like the first one where there's not that obvious, "Oh, I get why *this* version exists" angle. Maybe it's the leaning heavily on the detective aspect, or maybe it's the gothic, '70s-ish Gotham aspect, but both of those feel more like character/production design choices as opposed to bigger-picture franchise reasoning.

Ultimately, we've probably reached a point where it doesn't even matter, and I'm not saying it does here, it's just interesting how this iteration is the first to lack obvious justification for its existence at the outset.

Wow! Love it! VERY '70s. The production design so far has been incredible, and so different from any Batman iterations we've seen before, in the best way.

Any idea when this is supposed to be set in time wise? Is this going to be a present-day setting or possibly set in the 70s?

There's smart phones and HD news vans, so not 70's

I thought the whole point of this was to show the detective side of Batman, which really hasn't been done in a live action movie?

What AgfromHOU said. We've seen a news truck in set videos that advertised "HD," so we're at least in modern day. That said, my guess is that it's ultimately going to have more of a "timeless" feel. Modern tech will be featured, but between the rumored, overall Chinatown-esque inspiration, the '70s aesthetic of the Batmobile, and the more gothic-looking parts of London doubling as Gotham so far, I think it's going to be a pretty unique look/vibe overall.

DC Publisher Jim Lee also said this weekend that The Batman will move the DC Universe forward, then mentioned Suicide Squad, Black Adam, and WW84 as doing the same.

Ha, that's literally what I said in that post. But to me that's more of a character choice, not like a big, obvious, contextual, franchise-defining reason for starting fresh again. Don't get me wrong, I think the detective angle will be enough to separate it in audience's minds for sure (along with all the other obvious tells). I'm just making the observation that from the moment each past iteration was announced, we knew exactly why the new route was being taken from a studio perspective. Each new iteration was easily "justified," for lack of a better word. This is the first time the reason simply seems to be, "Because... Batman." Which is 100% fine with me, and is obviously the new norm in the superhero arms race. I'm just thinking out loud.

I'm assuming he means that in a general, overall sense, not that The Batman will move the DCEU, specifically, forward, as we're almost certain this is going to be its own, contained universe.

Totally agree. I'm very curious to see which cuff links Thomas may have considered for that evening before making his final selection. And Mrs. Wayne's pearls....were those her mothers, costume, or a splurge she bought on her own? Maybe a gift from Thomas?

You guys can get snarky about each and every Batman movie that just "doesn't add enough to the canon" or "just repeats what we've already seen (the Waynes' death)", but I, for one, hope they make Batman movies and reboot the franchise for the rest of my life.
The negativity and pessimism does nothing to stifle the true Batman fans.

Like comics, films adaptations of comic heroes need to be adjusted and rejuvenated.

I bet we do. Some random "sources" are saying Johnny Depp.

Every movie iteration of Batman has had a Joker.

West had Romero

Keaton had Nicholson (I consider Kilmer and Clooney as the same Batman-verse as Keaton)

Bale had Ledger

Affleck had Leto

Make senses schedule-wise, but that end-of-June date is way more high profile than Suicide Squad's August date. My guess, if The Batman moves, it moves to November/December 2021.

Surely they'll move Aquaman so that it isn't a month after Shazam
