I am currently picturing this movie as Seven (or Se7en for the purists) meets Knives Out, staring Batman. So I agree the cast is huge, but these actors in particular are not going to take these roles if there isn't something meaty there to play. I'll trust Reeves.

Rumor is this starts filming in just a little over a week from now, on Monday, January 13 in London. If so, we might get a first official image around then as well. It just depends on where filming is taking place, exactly. If it's on a soundstage, we probably won't see anything. But a lot of times, when a movie of this scale films exteriors at real locations, with prying eyes all around, the studio will preemptively release an official image of an actor in costume so the first image isn't a grainy paparazzi photo. Either way, starting this month, I would expect news (and hopefully imagery of some kind) to heat up.

I spoke too soon (or late, rather). As of THIS weekend, filming has officially begun...

Btw, I LOVE that parts of London are being used for Gotham exteriors. It's the perfect look; not the modern urban vibe of Nolan's movies, and not the backlot soundstage feel of Burton's movies either, but something seemingly right in the middle.

I should also point out the "HD" on the news truck. Seeing as HD didn't exist until the '00s, I think we can finally confirm that this isn't set in the '90s. That said, the cars/trucks don't quite look ultra modern either. I don't think they suggest an exact year, though. Rather, they almost look more "timeless" to me. Modern, yes, but of a world that could potentially have a slightly heightened and purposefully vague feel, year-wise.

I like the timeless feel of Batman media. The tv show Gotham did a great job of not really letting you know what decade it took place in.

Our first (super grainy) look at Colin Farrell as The Penguin...

And then director Matt Reeves having some fun with it...

Just putting this out there but, people could just not take these pictures and put them on the internet.

That's from Zero Year, which recently replaced Year One as his origin (kind of).

I can't wait to see the direction this movie goes.

Never going to happen in a million years. Personally, I think it's fun. I just wish WB would have preemptively released official looks first.

To be clear, this is apparently NOT another an origin story, just so people aren't up in arms. I don't think Batman is quite a veteran yet either, though.

Yea I know. I think my stance is I enjoy it unless it's spoiling a part of the story.

Also, the cynic in me thinks WB knows it generates more buzz to have the leaks go out and then do official looks.

Exactly. Just don't look for them if you don't want to see them?

Hmm, this sounds suspiciously like logic.

The whole concept of set pictures is baffling to me.

Contrary to popular belief, actors are not acting behind the big screens we see in the movie theaters. Rather, movies are first filmed on "sets." Some of these "sets" are built inside big sound stages (think really big airplane hangars), while others utilize real-life locations. It's at these real-life locations that passersby and professional photographers sometimes capture still imagery of these sets - and the actors on them - using "cameras," which are how we get the pictures, which are then uploaded to the "internet," which Al Gore created in the early 1990s.

Instead if being passive aggressive, maybe just explain why you enjoy them?

Why not just wait until a trailer or official image is released instead of scouring the web for stuff that I isn't intended to be seen and looks like crap for the most part?
TCTTS

Ha, I wasn't being "passive aggressive." I was literally just making a dumb joke out of an alternate translation of the sentence you typed.

That said, are we really having this conversation AGAIN?

First of all, I didn't "scour the web" for these photos. They're popping up in my Twitter feed, like 99% of the stuff I post on this board. Second of all... who cares??? How could seeing any of this possibly affect your movie-going experience 18 months from now? We know Collin Farrell is playing the Penguin. Now we know Collin Farrell is playing the Penguin... with an umbrella (gasp!) and blonde hair. As for the other images, like the ones I posted yesterday, personally, I find it fun to look for little clues here and there, like the "HD" on the news truck I mentioned that tells us this almost assuredly isn't set in the '90s. But beyond the thrill of getting a little hint at what a character might look like, or deducing minor conclusions based on set clues, I simple find it fun and helpful to glean whatever vibe I can about the movie itself, and enjoy discussing that with others.

However, clearly, each movie of this caliber now needs THREE threads, apparently...

1) The Spilner-approved version where ONLY official materials can posted.

2) The middle-ground version where we don't even come close to posting spoilers, and never will, but *do* dabble with set pics and theories from time to time, and talk expectations based on what little info we do have.

3) The spoiler thread once the movie finally hits theaters.

Consider this the second version. If you want to start your own, where only official material is allowed, go right ahead. Otherwise, we have polar opposite takes on what we deem "spoilers," and what we enjoy about the experience leading up to a movie's release in general. It's clear that's never, ever going to change.

Uh... my first post was neither directed at you, nor meant to be a jab at you posting those pics. I just honestly don't understand why people are into set pics and wanted to hear your thoughts.

Your fuse continues to get shorter and shorter around here. There was zero aggression intended in my post.
TCTTS

And you're being just as "sensitive" as you're claiming I am. I posted set pics, you expressed irritation about set pics in general, while implying an annoyance with those who enjoy looking at them. I then responded in kind. Granted, my response was also a reaction to your years and years and years of complaining about insignificant spoilers, which you seemed to be doing yet again here. I get the "short fuse" comment, but I still think my reaction is fair.
Brian Earl Spilner
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Well now we're going on a tangent, but I haven't even mentioned spoilers in a long while and have actively tried to get better about that. And honestly spoilers are not really the reason I'm not into set pics, it's more for superhero/blockbuster movies, with costumes that will not photograph well until they're actually in the movie.

I'm guilty of posting a ton of pics of Hollywood Blvd from OUATIH, but that's stuff that looked fantastic even in the candid shots. It didn't need anything to look like the real 1969.

Anyway I'm done derailing. Carry on.

I hereby vote we only submit pictures of the actors in costume, but doing things like getting coffee or skateboarding.

Yeah I know. Reeves said he wants to place Batman in the beginning of his career, as in after origin but before Robin, with the villains already existing.

I just want to see the damn suit and Batmobile!!!
