Well that was fast. Looks like Affleck is officially out as well, if there was any question...

At this point I'll just be glad if DC can string together some good movies. MCU scratches my shared universe awesomeness itch, if DC can nail the singular character portraits, and I'll be a happy comics nerd

Agreed. I just want good stories/movie. We only need one shared universe, and that's the MCU.

Also from the THR interview. I was hoping for December 2020, but it's looking like summer 2021 instead. If I had to guess, I bet Warner Bros. slots it in their go-to, mid-to-late July spot...

Quote:

What's your goal as far as a release date?

We haven't been dated. I wouldn't commit to this, but we're thinking the movie would probably be for 2021, late spring or summer. Warner Bros. has been incredibly supportive and given me a lot of time and shared the same passion that I do for this story.

Soon as I read this I thought "No way Affleck is sticking around then". Then I turned the page...

Excited about the direction. Hope they nail the casting. I still don't think we've ever gotten the complete Bruce Wayne/Batman package.

If it's not one of the names below, it'll almost assuredly have to be a relative unknown, as this is just about every "name" actor I could find who I think could be a candidate (though some of these are far more realistic/capable/appropriate than others). That said, I'm sure there are plenty of on-the-cusp actors I've missed (let me know if so), and it's a little hard to narrow down regardless, because we have no idea if "younger" means mid-to-late-20s or "younger" simply means younger than Affleck , who's 46.

Either way, here's how I've broken down the potential candidates, and will add any notable names you guys come top with...

REALISTIC / 20s:
Joe Alwyn (27)
Ansel Egort (24)
Alden Ehrenreich (29)
Liam Hemsworth (29)
Nicholas Hoult (29)
Jack Reynor (27)
Aaron Taylor-Johnson (28)

REALISTIC / 30s:
Christopher Abbott (32)
Penn Badgley (32)
Ben Barnes (37)
Charlie Cox (36)
Jamie Dornan (36)
Scott Eastwood (32)
Zac Efron (31)
Jake Gyllenhaal (38)
Armie Hammer (32)
Kitt Harrington (32)
Garrett Hedlund (34)
Jack Huston (36)
Oscar Isaac (39)
Joel Kinnaman (39)
Shia LaBeouf (32)
Richard Madden (32)
Glen Powell (30)
Sebastian Stan (36)
Dan Stevens (36)
Miles Teller (31)

PROBABLY TOO OLD:
Jason Clarke (49)
Joel Edgerton (44)
Michael Fassbender (41)
Jon Hamm (47)
Gabriel Macht (47)
James Marsden (45)
Karl Urban (46)

PROBABLY TOO FAMOUS / NOT REALISTIC:
Bradley Cooper (44)
Ryan Gosling (38)
Chris Pine (38)

Who do we like?

Who do we think it'll be?

If I had to pick from this list, I'd say Chris Pine would be my top choice, as I think he'd at least make for a fantastic Bruce Wayne. Though, again, I don't know how realistic he is as candidate, seeing as he's already played Captain Kirk, Jack Ryan, Steve Rogers, and voiced Spider-Man. Seems as if his franchise cup is full, so to speak.

So, out of the "realistic" choices, I'd probably have to go with either Armie Hammer (who was cast once before as Batman in the '07 Justice League movie that was scrapped last minute) or Jake Gyllenhaal (even though Gyllenhaal doesn't feel quite right to me), with my dark horse contender being Joe Alwyn, who feels like he's one role away from blowing up.

Truth be told, none of these names feel as perfect as Bale did when he was cast, which is why I'm ultimately hoping for a relative unknown who can knock it out of the park.

Either way, with filming not rumored to start until November, I'm guessing we'll have our name by summer at the latest. If so, the next four to six months are going to be very interesting...

Also, to save you guys the trouble, I'd be shocked if anyone from a CW show is cast, much less makes Reeves'/WB's official list (though I could be wrong)...

Some interesting stats...

Michael Keaton
37 when he filmed Batman (released in 1989)
40 when he filmed Batman Returns (released in 1992)

3 YEARS BETWEEN RELEASES / NEW ACTOR

Val Kilmer
35 when he filmed Batman Forever (released in 1995)

2 YEARS BETWEEN RELEASES / NEW ACTOR

George Clooney
35 when he filmed Batman & Robin (released in 1997)

8 YEARS BETWEEN RELEASES / NEW ACTOR

Christian Bale
30 when he filmed Batman Begins (released in 2005)
33 when he filmed The Dark Knight (released in 2008)
37 when he filmed The Dark Knight Rises (released in 2012)

4 YEARS BETWEEN RELEASES / NEW ACTOR

Ben Affleck
43 when he filmed Batman vs. Superman (released in 2016)
44 when he filmed Justice League (released in 2017)

4 YEARS BETWEEN RELEASES / NEW ACTOR

Unknown Actor
?? when he films The Batman (releasing in 2021)

... in other words, we've never had an actor in his 20s play Batman. The closest thing we've had is a 30-year-old Bale playing a college-age Wayne for a few scenes. So, considering this is NOT an origin story, will Reeves still keep it relatively young (mid-to-late-20s) and break the mold or stick with an actor in his 30s?

I feel like there's definitely room for a late 20ish Batman (which what Bale was playing based on the general timeline of Begins). And I'd prefer to see that I think, something different and a character that could be more interesting to follow as he finds his way.

I just can't see Armie Hammer in the role, he's almost too cartoony/caricatured for me (maybe because I can't not picture his role in Sorry to Bother You). He's too old now, but I've always said Scott Adkins would be the perfect Batman/Wayne if we could teach him to act

Gyllenhall would be ok but doesn't really fit the look to me. I heard Ben Barnes mentioned somewhere, he's an interesting choice. And I can't say I don't like the idea of Pine, though agreed it's unlikely.

i think karl urban would be great and he'd be my choice of the "probably too old" list. i'd add jason clarke to that list too.

i'm assuming they go younger though, i think alden ehrenreich should be considered. he got swept up into a lot of the Solo backlash, but honestly, i thought he did a pretty good job in the role. probably too small though.

two other actors, whose name i don't know, but kinda fit the look would be the main kid from the maze runner series and the guy who played Ward in Agents of Shield.

edit...looked up their names, it's dylan o'brien and brett dalton

My arbitrary two cents:

- I love Gylenhaal, but I can't really see him as Bruce Wayne. He strikes me as more of an awkward/loner type in a lot of his roles... which might actually work for a young Bruce. But he and I also have the same height/weight/body type, and I don't really see him being a physically imposing presence or someone who could physically kick the asses of an entire gang at once. Mysterio seems like a potentially great fit; Batman, maybe not so much. But I'm sure he could pull it off if needed, he's great. And I haven't seen Jarhead, in case he plays a harder character.

- Ben Barnes was very impressive in S1 of Punisher, so I think he'd be my preference. He can definitely pull out the charm if needed. And I liked Armie Hammer in the Social Network. Prior to that, I wouldn't have been in favor, but I think that dude is pretty good.

- Boo to Scott Eastwood, I haven't yet seen him do anything worth a damn. Also, he's already been in the DCEU as "random soldier who gets more screen time than half the squad, for some reason."

This isn't a big name, but Christopher Abbott could be an interesting choice. He has been pulling his weight in the indie scene and could realistically be Bruce Wayne and Batman IMO.

While Pacific Rim 2 wasn't very good, the best part was probably John Boyega making fun of his good looks. Eastwood looks the part, he's just not that great an actor.

as a non-comic reader, is 20-something bruce wayne supposed to be just as dark and brooding as 40-something bruce wayne?

obviously his parents died when he was young, but i wouldn't mind seeing that dialed back a bit in this iteration.

Some good suggestions. Added...

Christopher Abbott
(Yeah, he's a great actor. I like this idea, almost as a younger, unexpected Keaton-type.)

Jason Clarke
(Yeah, he's the oldest of the bunch - older than Affleck even - but adding him.)

Alden Ehrenreich
(Might be a little too boy-ish still, but who knows.)

Liam Hemsworth
(I purposefully left him off initially because I think it's always been a challenge for him to check his Aussie-ness at the door, but maybe not.)

Gabriel Macht
(Probably too old as well, and I doubt he's a big enough name. After a certain age that can really work against you)

It was my gut reaction already, but I'm agreeing more and more with a few here that Gyllenhaal just doesn't feel right. I can't see him as Bruce Wayne, and I don't think he has the voice for Batman. He just has a slight quirk about him that feels a little off.

Chris Pine and Armie Hammer are still my top two choices.

Also should add Shia LaBeouf and Miles Teller. I don't love these two choices (I don't like Teller at all, and LaBeouf is a strange one), but if they brought their A game they could at least be interesting and portray a younger/learning Batman who makes mistakes well. They could also both do the charming Bruce Wayne thing.

Teller might be interesting. Forgot about him. I can't see Shia being cast, simply because all of his baggage, but adding him as well.
