For my part, I think the only Spider-Man iteration that was absolutely unnecessary was the Garfield movies.

The Raimi movies had just wrapped up, and for the most part were a great series. (With the obvious exception of 3.)

This new version is pretty fresh/different, especially with him being in the MCU and the involvement of Stark.

That Garfield series is the odd man out. Didn't really do anything new/different, and literally nobody was asking for a reboot.

And it's a shame, because I would've been a hell of a lot more receptive to this new Spider-man if it wasn't for that middle series. Personally I think Tom Holland is killing it. (Though Tobey is still my favorite.)

Quote:

- 7 Batmans (Lewis Wilson, Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale, Ben Affleck)

- 8 Supermans (Kirk Alyn, George Reeves, Christopher Reeve, Dean Cain, Tom Welling, Brandon Routh, Henry Cavill, Tyler Hoechlin)

I just added the 40's movie serial, but definitely a solid list.

I think if dean cain and whoever tyler hoechlin is get a mention, then kevin conroy should get one for batman.

Yeah I'm not sure why the Superman from the Supergirl tv show gets counted in this. If you're going to count that then this list could get really long. Feels like we could throw in Matt Bomer, Alan Tudyk, Adam Baldwin and Mark Harmon as Superman if we're going to count a side character in a CW tv show about another superhero.

If the November 2019 shoot date is true, I'm still guessing this is a December 2020 release, basically in the Aquaman spot Warner Bros. had this year. Especially with the presumed absence of Star Wars in December 2020. Granted, it'll likely be up against Avatar 2, but I think there's definitely room for both that month...

Gotta say, I do hope Affleck comes back. To me it's clear that they can (and mostly have) brought the DCEU back from the brink.

If they can get a good Batman movie out, then a proper Man of Steel sequel, I'll be more than satisfied.

I liked Affleck in the role, but I feel the exact opposite. I want a fresh start. I want a Batman where Batman is the only superhero again. I don't want Batman to exist in a world where aliens and gods and what not are already among us, have already attacked Earth, etc. I want a more "grounded," detective Batman, which is what it sounds like we're getting. I of course don't mind team-ups and the MCU and all that, but Batman has always felt to me like he needs to be his own, separate thing.

I just couldn't take another Batman in such a short time. Granted, it worked for Spider-Man, but they've already established Affleck in the DCEU. I just want some stability, especially considering the rumors that Cavill is done as Superman.

Edit: To clarify, I'm totally in agreement on everything else you're saying. I do hope it's a prequel and standalone story, which would work out well considering they made Affleck look older for BvS and JL.

I'd prefer good movies be prioritized over keeping actor continuity.

I hear you, and definitely understand not wanting yet another Batman in such a short time, but I'm also factoring in that December 2020 is two years away. Two and a half years away if it's summer 2021. By then, the blockbuster/superhero landscape might be so different that it would almost feel weird WITH Affleck still in the role, after so much time. Granted, we went three and four years between Bale Batman movies, but there wasn't much else going on in the DC (or blockbuster) world back then. Between now and the end of 2020...

- Shazam!, Joker, Wonder Woman 1984, Birds of Prey, and potentially even another DCEU movie will have all been released.
- The main "arc" of the MCU will have ended, and will be well into a completely new phase.
- The Fox iteration of the X-Men franchise will have concluded, with Disney's plan for new iterations of those characters having likely already been announced.
- The Star Wars Skywalker Saga will have ended.
- Daniel Craig will be done with Bond.

Point being, everything else by then will feel like it's moved on so much that the idea of Affleck back under the cowl again might feel somewhat antiquated. Like it was from a different era. Especially if the DCEU finds more success between now and then, they might not even want to associate with the "dark ages" of BvS and Justice League in that way.

The Penguin is a mob boss, so I hope this means they're focusing on the entrenched organized crime aspect of Gotham. Plus he doesn't like the Wayne's, so that's another interesting layer to the character. The Arkham and Telltale games both did good versions of Penguin's character, so I can see this character being an intimidating crime boss, and not a Batman Returns clone..

But we'll see! Sounds good so far.

Yeah, my guess is that this is the gritty crime boss version, and he's pulling the strings, but there's another, more physical adversary for Batman who's working for/with The Penguin.

Maybe they'll use Deathstroke after all, for that muscle role.

"After delivering the first draft of the script in September, Reeves turned in a rewrite of the script last month. A recent rumor claimed this rewrite was in an effort to inject more action into the standalone film, however, this has yet to be confirmed"

I hope this wasn't WB Execs providing 'guidance' again...

Had never heard of Hush, just looked him up. If true, this is either going to be really, really, really dumb or really, really, really cool, with no in between. Given that it's Matt Reeves, I'm leaning toward the latter. Could be an awesome, roundabout way to examine Wayne's origin in a way we haven't seen before without it actually being an origin story. Seems like a random character to tie in some way to The Penguin, though, so we'll see...

So Hush the character and not Hush the novel. The novel has a ton of dif characters which would be I think hard to translate to a movie but I could be wrong.

Ehhh... That's a lot of stuff to cram into your first Batman movie, imo. You gotta introduce this new Batman and new Gotham. Then you gotta introduce the villains and establish why both Hush and Penguin hate Wayne/Batman. Then you gotta make us care that all this villainous psychological manipulation is happening to this new Batman. That's a tall order.

But I am hopeful it'll work some way.
TCTTS

I don't know, that seems pretty standard to me. "Introducing" a new Batman/Gotham shouldn't be that complicated or time consuming. '89 Batman did it fairly economically, and I think the whole point of this one is to get right into it as well. We know Batman's story. There's not a whole lot to set up in that regard. And the rest of what you mentioned would literally *be* the movie.
Render

Completely agree. But to me the plot feels like a sequel plot. The first movie sets up the hero, then the sequels progressively test the hero in deeper, more personal ways. We saw this in TDK, and in Empire with SW. So to me it seems they're jumping right in to that deeper-type of hero testing.

On a side note, I'm curious how they're gonna kill the Waynes in this movie. It'll be the third time we see them killed on-screen in the span of a few years, lol! Talk about feeling pain for the Waynes..
TCTTS

That's a good point, re: this potentially feeling like something that should be reserved for a sequel. Who knows how they're going to handle it. As for killing the Waynes yet again, hopefully they don't even show it, and maybe it's only mentioned by Hush, if he is indeed in the movie.

That's really interesting to hear. The more I learn about this movie, the more I want to see it. If the writing is there, this could be one of the best superhero movies ever, imo.

I hope so. I just think the Wayne murder is just overplayed by now. We get it, they got shot, and it starts Bruce's ascension to Batman. You can save yourself a few minutes of screen time and dedicate it to something else.

Still think Viggo Mortensen as an older, more detective-oriented batman would be pretty good. Or hell, go older like Batman Beyond and put someone like Ed Harris in the role.

Interesting quote, it'll be interesting if they try to act like this was the strategy all along:

Quote:

Beyond that, Reeves confirms that Warner Bros. is moving away from the shared universe idea, and is going to focus on one movie at a time. "Aquaman is going to be very different from the Todd Phillips Joker movie, and that's going to be different from Shazam and Harley Quinn," Reeves says. "Warners believes they don't have to try to develop a giant slate that has to have all the plans for how it's going to connect. What they need to try and do is make good movies with these characters."

I'm really looking forward to The Batman. I haven't seen a DC movie in theater (aside from Wonder Woman, which I thought was good) since being disappointed by man of steel, and whenever I catch snippets on tv, I find myself thinking skipping them was a good idea.

Stand alone Batman, though? Hell yeah.
Thanks and gig'em

Reeves is definitely saying all the right things. Hopefully he can deliver.

As for the overall slate strategy from this point on, I don't think WB/DC will try to act like that was the strategy all along. They know they f-ed up, and they certainly know that we know that f-ed up. It's been a fairly public course correction so far, and I see no reason why they'd start pretending anything else now.

Also from the THR interview. I was hoping for December 2020, but it's looking like summer 2021 instead. If I had to guess, I bet Warner Bros. slots it in their go-to, mid-to-late July spot...

Quote:

What's your goal as far as a release date?

We haven't been dated. I wouldn't commit to this, but we're thinking the movie would probably be for 2021, late spring or summer. Warner Bros. has been incredibly supportive and given me a lot of time and shared the same passion that I do for this story.
